Re: Unclear criteria of General message board.
Thank you. The "Recent Member Connect Activity" works fine for me.

Re: Unclear criteria of General message board.
I cannot believe how petty many people are when posting on any of the site boards. Are we children here? This a primary reason I don't utilize the boards; you have to weed through the whining to find reasonable users with legitimate questions or helpful answers.

Re: Unclear criteria of General message board.
Sgodfrey: I've explained ad infinitum what posts are appropriate for this board and which will be deleted and which moved based upon the appropriateness for this board....I won't comment further in this thread because obviously some people are not paying attention but trying to change the focus of this board through arguing which isn't going to happen.
I seldom delete posts from this board but I did delete your post starting a new thread on this board because it was not appropriate to try to instruct posters how to circumvent the posting criteria for this board. Please do not do that again. Simply stating that you intend for a post to be posted on USA General doesn't make the content of the post appropriate for THIS board.
Thanks!

Wait, so then what is the purpose of Message Boards > Localities > North America > United States > Unknown Locality?
Your definition describes them as one in the same.

Re: Unclear criteria of General message board.
Magnolia: The Unknown board for USA was created relatively recently by staff who didn't know the history and hierarchy of the existing boards and probably should never have been created. However, since I don't admin THAT board I'm not going to speculate on what should and shouldn't be posted there. My concern is the USA GENERAL board and what is appropriate for THIS board.
USA General has been around for many years (you can look at the oldest posts on both boards and you will see what I'm saying is fact).

Re: Unclear criteria of General message board.
For quite a few years (since 2008 to be specific)...ever since they were going to kill it and I pointed out there were some instances where no other board would be appropriate. As a result, staff said I could admin it and save it from being killed as long as I as made sure only those few threads where no other board was appropriate were left on the board. Others were to be moved (or deleted if unsuitable for any genealogy board).

joan- realize this isnt the topic in the original subject line, but you wrote " you don't need to receive email alerts --- just click on My Alerts when logged in and check the ones added since your last visit". and ancestry says "Receive notifications of recent posts made to boards you are interested in. " that doesnt mean answers to MY posts. so is everyone pretty much saying we are no longer going to get email alerts? i have posted all over the boards for 10 yrs-173 pages- i guess 4000+ posts -which i assume u have also. without going thru all 173 pages and adding those boards to my alerts- is there no other way to be notified? i am on some boards every day, but barely remember where i was 10 yrs ago! any help on this issue?

Aurina: nothing has changed with regard to Ancestry sending out the email notices BUT many ISPs block them as spam. If that happens and a notice is returned to Ancestry they put your address on a "no mail" list as being undeliverable. So many people never see the notices. that is why I suggested not counting on them and reviewing My Alerts after marking all boards of interest to your Alerts.
The only other way I know of to check about emails is if you are not getting them call Ancestry and ask if your mail was returned and if they can get you off the "no mail" list. But it most likely will only happen again with some ISPs.
