I notice that this is a recent post so this is a general response to your questions. There is a Facebook account for Blalock Mexico Colony and a website www.blalockmexicocolony.org with info dedicated to the colony. In addition there will be a 2013 reunion of the descendants of the colonists in San Antonio on Saturday, November 23rd. We would love to hear from you by email and are eager to share anything in our collection with you. Thank you, Carol Ward

Lee,

My name is Joel Reyes a descendant of Jose Maria Cano who was born around 1790 in Reynosa, Mexico. He married Josefa Guzman around 1824 in Reynosa, Mexico. I'm hoping that you were able to compile marriage records up to this date as well. Please advise.

In addition, I'm also looking for the marriage/baptism/birth certificate record of his father (Eugenio Cano who married Rafaela Zamora around 1785).

Any documention/info you can provide me with would be greatly appreciated!

FYI, I also sent you an email requesting the same info

Warm Regards,
Joel Reyes

How can I get information from you on them? I have a lot of names and dates but very little on records. would appreciate help

thanks
jose cano

Thanks for the response. I'm a descendant of one of Antonio Margil's siblings but I do appreciate the detail you've provided for this line. Several of us that have been researching this extended line have not found Antonio's paternal grandfather or where they had come from. Our oldest references place Cristobal, Antonio Margil's father, in Cadereyta and El Pilon in the early 1700's. The info I have is that he was born in 1706 and married Ana Maria Garcia in 1726 noted as vecinos de San Mateo de Pilon.
My e-mail is dcano08@gmail.com
Thanks!

I am looking for the birth record of my great grand parents: Francisco Garcia born about 1810 and his wife Agatona (antonia) Cordova. They had a daughter named Francisca that was born in 1848. When she married Vicente Salazar in Brownsville, their marriage record named her parents and that they came from Reynosa. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Gregorio Farias and Josefa Longoria, Matamoros, Tamaulipas

I have seen multiples times reference to Gregorio Farias and Josefa Longoria being married. Often they are referred to Gregorio Farias Trevino and Josefa Eulogia Longoria. Usually, they are referenced to have married abt 1801. I doubt this date as she probably would have been very very young. The Seabury papers list her birth as 19 Mar 1794. I have been unable to find any source that they are the two specific people that married. A Gregorio and Josefa had several children in the Matamoros area starting in the 1817. ( one being my gggrandfather) If it was Josefa Eulogia Longoria, then her father was probably Ramon Longoria. If Gregorio is in fact a Farias Trevino, then his parents may have been Gregorio Valentin Farias and his mother Manuela Trevino from Camargo. Does anyone have any source evidence of this marriage? Maybe a reference in a will, or family records not available to the public. It would certainly help me through a brick wall. It is easy to assume the connection, but I try to avoid that. Thank you in advance to anyone that may be able to help.

Emilio Manautou of Matamoros and his descendants

As a companion to my post on Ramon Lafon of Matamoros, I wanted to start a thread here about another French expatriate to the city of Matamoros, Emilio Manautou. There is a little bit about him online but mostly just what is listed on the FamilySearch.org Mexican baptism and marriage indexes.

I will be updating this post with more information on his family as I scan the parish records. One of his grandsons, Enrique Manautou, migrated to Texas.

I have seen an exact birth date/place floating around the internet for Emilio (1802 in the city of Strasbourg France), but I have not yet found the source for this. His marriage record is sparse (in fact not even stating his LAST name), and his death record does not give a birth place.

I am also interested in reaching out to members of the Manautou family, both the Texan and Mexican branches of it.
There also seems to be a Puerto Rican Manautou family, but I am unsure if there is any relation to the family of Emilio (doubtful).

Descendants of Ramon Lafon of Matamoros - finding baptismal/marriage record for son Antonio Fernando Lafon who died in Monterrey

Hello all,

I dont know how many of you are aware of the family of Ramon Lafon, French expatriate who first migrated from Texas to the city of Matamoros about 1823. He appears in the the Mexico baptisms index on FamilySearch, as well as a few records in the 'Selected Parish Registers' on Ancestry.com for Tamaulipas. There are also some Mexican sites that mention him but they only use mostly the indexes. (I have tried to contact some of the owners of these sites but I never get a reply) I am descended from his son Dr. Antonio Fernando Lafon who later settled in Real de Catorce and then Monterrey, and who several of his descendants later moved to the US, including my own.

I've ventured out of just relying on the index to get the full picture on the family of Ramon Lafon and dug through the baptisms, marriage and death records of Matomoros by hand, page by page(the death records are almost completely unindexed).

The earlier found record for him in Matamoros is his marriage to Maria de los Angeles Garcia, on 1 Mar 1824 (mistakenly listed as Apr 1 1824 on Ancestry.com), daughter of Rafael Garcia and Guadalupe Cisneros. He is said in that record to come from the city of Coutras in France, born about 1791 (source: New Orleans Passenger Manifests) the son of Antonio Lafon and his late wife, Catarina Barbarron.
Ramon Lafon was murdered on 27 May 1832 in Matamoros by a gunshot to the chest (I am still looking for details on the murder). From here, I have constructed his family as best as I can despite knowing little Spanish. I was able to find I believe most of his children as well as his death record that wasnt anywhere on the internet. As far as I have been able to find, Ramon Lafon only has descendants through the two surviving sons.

The children are:

1. Dr. Antonio Fernando Lafon - born ca 1824 or early 1825, Died of a heart attack on 31 Dec 1889 in Monterrey.
2. Augustina Lafon - baptized Aug 1825, died 12 Nov 1825
3. Emilina Lafon - baptized Nov 1826 (note - she is listed in the index but there are missing pages at the end of the 1826 baptism book, so this record is lost)
4. Maria los Angeles Lafon - baptized Jan 1828
5. Jose Anastasio Lafon - baptized Aug 1829, died Oct 1829
6. Jose Anastasio Ramon Lafon - Named after deceased brother, but afterward only called 'Ramon Lafon', baptized Jun 1831, later moved to Monterrey with brother Antonio
7. Melania Lafon - baptized Oct 1832 (a posthumous child).

As far as I have found thus far, Ramon Lafon only had grandchildren through the 2 surviving sons, though I have not found death records for all of the daughters.

The problem I am having concerns the son Antonio, whom I am descended from. I have collected the baptism records of most of his father's known children. There are some gaps in which more children may be, but I think I have all of them. Anyway, the issue is although Antonio is always called a son of Ramon Lafon and Maria de los Angeles Garcia, I was not able to find his baptism despite looking page by page from 1823 to the middle of 1832. There is some space in 1827 and 1830 that it could have happened, but he cannot be a younger son as he is listed as having practicing medicine in Matamoros in Louisiana records in 1854 "for about 5 years". He could also theoretically born earlier, but there isnt much space for him. I also cannot locate Antonio Fernando Lafon's marriage to his first cousin, Maria Eugenia Manuotou (their mothers were sisters).

The first reaction would be that, well, perhaps he was illegitimate. I considered that, which is why I looked some years before his parents marriage. Nothing matched.
Another objection could be that perhaps Antonio was born elsewhere, but in Antonio Fernando Lafon's death record in 1890, he is said to be from Matamoros. In the same death record, he is also called the legitimate son of the late Ramon Lafon.

Here's the kicker for me. Although his death record appears to have been reported by a non family member, his age is given as 65 years, putting his birth about 1824-5. Now, Mexican death records reported by co workers, friends etc tend to overstate the age, though.

This has been sending me up the wall trying to find his birth and marriage record. Ive gone through the baptisms about 3 times now, and although parts of it get messy and hard to read (not to mention that I cant really read Spanish and have to look for names), its clear enough in the key periods. There are also no other Ramon Lafons at this time; in fact he seems to be the only man named Lafon in the entire country.

My original theory is that the baptism record for the son Jose Anastasio Lafon was a mistake - its sloppily written and thought maybe Anastasio was meant to be Antonio. That theory went out the window when I found the death record for this son 2 months after the baptism. The other son, Anastasio Ramon, is also not him as he later marries in Monterrey in 1860.

Im thinking now that perhaps Antonio was baptized and maybe even married in a nearby parish.(I already checked Texas records in case he married across the border) The trouble with that is that there wasnt much nearby then. The nearest parish as far as I can figure is that of Reynosas, but those arent available (they are held in Texas and not filmed at all).

Anyway, Id love to have some help with this, should someone else descend from this family, or if they have more familarity with the Mexican records. My 'translation' of these records is imperfect as I have to attempt to read and type them out into a translator.

thanks,

Daniel Maxwell

(NOTE - crossposted on Lafon, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipus boards)

Dear Mr. Maxwell,

I am a historian, currently writing my doctoral dissertation on Matamoros' trade connections with New Orleans during the early nineteenth century. Ramon Lafon has come up multiple times in my archival searches, and although I cannot be of much help with your search for additional birth or death records, I may be able to provide a couple additional details about his life in the city.

He was a French maritime merchant, first arriving in Matamoros in the early 1820s, where he was caught multiple times by Mexican authorities for smuggling tobacco and dry goods into the country from New Orleans. He operated a number of different schooner vessels, trading goods with locals in exchange for Mexican silver. He strategically married into an elite Mexican family, and his remains are housed in a crypt of the Sagrado Corazón Church in Matamoros.

According to my research he had another son that is unaccounted for in your entry - Ramon Lafon Garcia - also born in Matamoros and an integral political figure in Monterrey in the late 1860s (as well as administrator of a factory in San Luis Potosi). He died there in 1878. Maybe this is the missing link you are looking for?

I would love to hear more about your research and any other documents you have found, and would be happy to share with you the more arcane records in which he appears (ship registers, etc). I am not a member of this site, but a google search of my name (Melisa Galvan) will lead you to my contact information. Hope to hear from you soon.
Hello Mr Gonzalez,

You and I are cousins because Maria Eufrosina Lafon is my ancestor's sister. If you send me a backchannel with your contact information I can give you more information. I also own the only known photos of some of the Lafon family. I would be happy to exchange information with my Mexican cousins (my grandmother, still living, is also a Gonzalez).

Anyway, to answer your question. You are referring to the children of Dr. Antonio Fernando Lafon baptized at Real de Catorce. My ancestor was one of them. The reason she is called 'Maria de refugio Chapa' is because she was by this time a widow for a 2nd time and she used several different names after that. But the earlier 2 baptisms back in Matamoros (and I believe, before Maria de Los Angeles was remarried) the parents of Antonio Lafon are indeed given as Ramon Lafon and Angeles Garcia. That is also what she is called in Dr Lafon's own death record in 1890. Only in the baptism records of Real de Catorce is she referred to as 'Chapa'.

I also have some other information about Emilio Manuotou if you are interested.

I understand that Jose Bernardo's wife was Albina daughter of Jose Antonio Perez and Maria Juliana Moreno. After Albina died Bernardo married Merced Hernandez, also in Burgos. Bernardo's father was Jose Domingo (died 1822) who was the son of Francisco Molina who was married possibly to Maria Claudia Alvarez first and then Petra Dorotea Reyes.
I suspect that Bernardo and Albina had a child or two before she died but no definite information.
Would love to make contact with descendants from any of these lines. I am from the line of Bernardo and Merced.
