Hi, I just recently started a search for Armenta. My great-grandmother was Carmen Armenta she was born in Tuson AZ in 1871. that is as far back as I can go. I have no knowledge of her parent or siblings. She did marry Richardo T Amado. Does this tie in with anything you have in your tree? My ancestry is Armenta-Amado-Cortez-Cunningham. Thank you.

I am so happy to hear from you. My husband and I thank you very much for the photograph! I began our genealogy project full time one year ago. A lot of what I have documented is information from Church records in Mexico obtained on familysearch.org. I have documented 10 children of Sarah Contreras(z) Serrano and Genaro Serrano, all born in Hermosillo. I have the death certificate of Sarah Contreras Serrano confirming that she was born November 14, 1860; died January 11, 1930 in L.A. CA. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery. Although the Death Certificate doesn't say it, other documents say she was born in Stockton, CA, moved to Hermosillo and returned to the U.S. in 1904. M. Lanphar signed her death certificate. Would this be your grandmother Maria Refugio Serrano? If so, I believe I located her baptism certificate confirming she was born 4 August 1889 and baptized 7 August 1889 in Hermosillo,La Asuncion Church. Her name appears as "Sista Refugio Serrano". Do I have this correct? Please email me at rkgrace1@cox.net and I will share what I have. We would enjoy learning all that you know about the family history. I don't know how to use this site very well. Ruthann Grace

I know Maria's relatives settled in Arizona, but I have not been able to contact them. I have attached a picture of Sara Contrerez. I'd like to here more from you r side. Do you have family pictures?
Thanks,
John

Hello Mary,

Ancestry.com is a paid site, a subscription is required to access their database.

Unfortunately Ancestry.com do not provide BMD records of Mexico, unless that person was a citizen. But border crossings and some documents relating to entry into the U.S. are available. If your family traveled to the States, they would have had a card documenting their visits when crossing the border.

As Jon said, the familysearch.org is your best source for BMD records of Mexico. The older records are very helpful,
and may have information regarding a marriage, grandparents, or children.

Good luck in your search, Susan

Hello Mary,

You need to look at www.familysearch.org

This will get you into the main page. You can try and search any indexed records from there. You will need to get familiar with the way that the website works, and try putting in different combinations of variables.

The obvious are first and last name. I would also put in "Magdalena, Sonora, Mexico" into the place field for birth, and see what you come up with. Do not put in any date range at first. Experiment, and see what you can find. It takes a bit of practice, but once you have figured out how the site works, there are all kinds of materials to look at.

To access the actual films (digitized), you will need to go a different direction on the site. You can try and contact me directly for additional help.

Kind regards,

Jon

Hello - we are searching for my husband;s family from Sonora/Magdalena also. I am not that great with Ancestry. Can you tell me where to locate the LDS records we can search? We read and speak fluent Spanish so we can read the records....I just can't figure out Ancestry.Com.

We would really appreciate it. His elderly family members only remember so much.

Thank you so much!

Mary Jespersen

Hello - I am sorry to bother you but we are looking for one of my husband's relatives named Gertrudis Zazueta who married a Maximiliano Corbala. My husband's family is from Sonora area and eventually settled in Magdalena - they have family i Hermosillo and other towns also. We are totally stuck at this point in his tree.

Any information would be so helpful!
Mary Jespersen

I see that one of my great great grandmothers was born in Sonora, Mexico and came to California. I'm still trying to establish her husband's name, either Manuel Moreno or Refujio Trejos. I have another great grandfather with the last name Laguna, who was a miner around the Mojave Desert, but, that is all I know. Do you have any list of miners? - thank you, Mernice Lanier (mernice@sbcglobal.net)

I will guide you through how to use the digitized microfilm of parish records that is available on the internet.

My email will be a bit cryptic, so that internet robots will not pick it up:

My email is "fox" [place the usual character here] "nevadalink" [place a period (dot) here] and then the three-letter internet usage indicating a commercial domain.

If this is a bit too cryptic, get back to me.
Jon ~ Thank you for the encouraging words. No, I have not attempted to use any other sources than what Ancestry offers in their Search. How would I be able to access the microfilms of the Magdalena parish? Going back to 1841 seems a stretch, and I have that date only because it is on her headstone. As for where Angelo was killed, I have no leads. ~ Darcy

Darcy,

Don't give up. Have you actually looked for the records for Josefa Cañes in the microfilms available for the Magdalena parish? There are some records that are not indexed, and others that may be poorly transcribed. If you need a helping hand, I can can point you in the right direction.

Do you read Spanish? If not, you can teach yourself to look for the critical things found in the records to locate your ancestors (antepasados). Do you know where Angelo was killed? If you can somewhat pinpoint the location, there may be a burial record, which are generally not indexed for the LDS filmed records (I am not sure why not, but this seems to be the general case).

There is still a lot for you to do, it just gets a bit harder. You owed it to yourself to take up the challenge. I know that it can be done, and the rewards for you will be great!

Jon

Having just read this thread there seems little hope of tracing my husband's ancestors one of whom was born in Magdalena, Sonora in 1841. She was born Josefa Cañes, and married Angelo de Alday and subsequently gave birth to two children. Josefa died in Lone Pine, CA, where she is buried in a now deserted cemetery. Her headstone is broken in two, and we are about to drive there and see if it can't be repaired. The family history tells that after settling in Lone Pine Angelo left the family to return to Mexico to sell his holdings. He was murdered there, leaving the family deserted. I was hopeful that I could learn any facts of her/their lives, or where his body might lie.

Hi Monica,

Just came across our old conversation and was wondering if you found anything out in France regarding Jean Boubion. All of my most recent research seems to point to his origin being around the area of Salies de Bearn, vPyrenees Atlantiques,France. I say that because I found another Jean Boubion (relative or Jean himself??) in that area that fathered a daughter in 1841, but no definitive proof of an actual connection versus conjecture.

Also, I know our grandparents mentioned the Basque in association with Jean Boubion, and Salies de Bearn is in that area of Basque country, but it's not clear if he was Basque, or just sailed out of Bayonne which was in Basque territory. It's hard to say because other Boubions show up near Paris a hundred years earlier.

PS. I looked through my old emails and couldn't find any chain of our having spoke. It's g (or g_) last name at yahoo.com

I would be very interested in the 1852 Santa Cruz, Sonora census, as I am sure that many other researchers would. Please do scan copies of the original, and make it available to those of us with a sincere interest. The transcription can be useful as well.

Your comment about the AZ State Genealogical Society is quite correct, as I had checked the old site before I posted my earlier message. That means that the publications that were offered by the society are probably no longer available directly from them. I understood that they would provide a copy on demand for the 1986 census publications, but I must assume that the Arizona Historical Society may not have the rights to do so. However, I note that the Family History Library does have a microfilm copy of these publications available for ordering and use at local LDS Family History Centers.

Jon

Just a couple of comments. The title of the 1852 Census of Pimeria Alta is deceptive as it includes only a few towns in the area around Altar. There is a separate 1852 Census of Santa Cruz, Sonora that I came across at the AZ Historical Society in Tucson. I copied it and made a transcription of it which I recently sent to a person who expressed interest. Perhaps it is time to scan the copies of the original and turn them into a pdf file. I'll look into that.

Also, the AZ State Genealogical Society is, unfortunately, no longer a functioning organization. I just googled it to make sure and found the following statement: Unfortunately, the society closed its doors on 30 Jun 2011. All of our assets are now held by the Tucson Branch of the Arizona Historical Society. I

Re: Santa Cruz Census

This Message may be duplicated elsewhere. Sorry if it is...

I have found the following information about these two census.

The 1831 census is of parts of what are now the Arizona counties of Pima, Pinal, Santa Cruz, and part of Sonora, Mexico. The index of names is available on Ancestry at "Arizona Census, 1831-80" (if you know what names to look for), and also from the Family History Library Index to the 1831 Census of Arizona and Sonora (Highland, Utah [Instituto], 1983) [FHL Book 979.1 A1 no. 87; Film 697282 Item 7].

The actual images of the 1831 census do not appear to be available.

The 1852 census is of the Pimeria Alta, in the District of Altar. It has been transcribed and published by the Arizona State Genealogical Society. Here is the reference

Sierras, Eugene L. (1986). Mexican census pre-territorial Pimeria Alta, 1852. Tucson, Arizona Arizona State Genealogical Society.

There is also an 1801 census available by the same author, published at the same time

Sierras, Eugene L. (1986). Mexican census pre-territorial Pimeria Alta, 1801. Tucson, Arizona Arizona State Genealogical Society.

For earlier information of a census nature, the following title may be useful

Platt, Lyman De. (19--?).

If anyone has any of these census records available in digital form, It would be good to know, and to make these available by direct request to those having them. I do not suggest that they be made available by a direct link. unless they are on a public site.

I hope that this is helpful.

Jon
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Sierras, Eugene L. (1986). Mexican census pre-territorial Pimeria Alta, 1852. Tucson, Arizona Arizona State Genealogical Society.

También hay un censo de 1801 disponible por el mismo autor, publicada al mismo tiempo

Sierras, Eugene L. (1986). Mexican census pre-territorial Pimeria Alta, 1801. Tucson, Arizona Arizona State Genealogical Society.

Juan
