Jose Maria Hernandez - Villa Union
I am starting my family tree search . I am looking for any information on my grandfather Jose Maria Hernandez who was born in Villa Union, Sinaloa, Mexico on or about July 4, 1897. He married Sabina Valenzuela (also from Sinaloa)and migrated to Phoenix, AZ around 1920. With him came his wife, 2 small children, his mother Elena (Aldaco) Hernandez, his sisters Victoria and Jovita, and his two brothers Topio and Marciano.

Re: Jose Maria Hernandez - Villa Union
Hi, I don't know what apellido or surname you are looking for, but you might go the nearest Church of the Latter Day Saints Family History Center. They have indexes of microfilms of early church records, including Villa Union. Villa Union was in the church's Mazatlan district, so the records may be found under that city. The LDS indexes will tell you the kind of record on each microfilm (baptism, marriage, or burial) and will tell you the span of years included on each one.
Then if you identify one or two that you want to search, for $6 each, they will order the film from Salt Lake City. When it arrives at your local LDS church, they will call you and guide you in looking at the microfilm. You will find them very helpful with no attempt to change your religion, in case you are concerned about that.
Baptism records include the mother's name, and sometimes that of the father and grandparents, and always the godparents.
There are two kinds of marriage records. One is the marriage itself. But perhaps more informing for you is the "Marriage information" records. These include the background... parentage, sometimes grandparentage, community of the groom and bridegroom. It includes when they took communion, published Banns of marriage, and depending upon the time period, the testimony of individuals who came to testify as to their good character.
Hope this helps.

Re: Jose Maria Hernandez - Villa Union
My grandfather and grandmother moved to Phoenix, AZ around 1922(?) with two small children, Elena and Jose Maria Jr. My grandfathers mother, 2 sisters and at least 2 brothers moved as well. In 1953 or 1954 they moved to San Jose, CA. Do you happen to know the names of your aunts and uncles? My grandmother's name was Savina Valenzuela before she married my grandfather. Maybe we can figure out if we re related.
