The origin of the name is Basque and it comes from the Basque Country in Spain. There is actually a town called Berastegui in the Basque Country.

My great grandfather's last name was Verastegui but I don't know where he was born. Maybe in Mexico? My great grandmother and him were married in Watsonville, CA. Details are rather vague.

Some that I did minor research gave me a hard time because the earlier ones spelled their surname as "VELAUSTRE".

Verastegui is a Basque. The Basques originated in the pyrenees mountains in the north east portion of Spain and the southeast portion of France. Bilbao to San Sebastian and south to Pamplona.

My great grandfather was Alberto Verastegui y Trabanco. He was born in Santander Spain. My other great grandfather on my father's side was Juan Maria Severano de Lizasoain, another Basque name. My father was born Gabriel Maria de Lizasoain y Verastegui.

Hi Robert,

A good way to find surname origins is to type the surname followed by the word "origin" into a Google search or if you get too many irrelevant hits, then try the surname followed by the words "surname" and "origin".

You will get results like:
