Professor Susan Deeds (Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff) has recently published a book on the Indians of Nueva Vizcaya entitled “Defiance and Deference in Mexico’s Colonial North: Indians Under Spanish Rule in Nueva Vizcaya.” It’s a fascinating book and everyone with ancestors in Durango or Chihuahua should read it.
In her book, Prof. Deeds makes several references to Captain Juan de Barraza who was instrumental in quashing several Indian uprisings in the 1630’s and 1640’s. Captain Barraza was based first at the Presidio of Tepehuanes and later at the Presidio of Mapimi.
Has anyone succeeded in identifying the descendants of Captain Barraza?

Re:Captain Juan de Barraza
Hi Javier,
Don't know if you are still seeking this info or if it pertains to the Juan de Barraza you inquired about...but I found this in a book I read a while back entitled "With All Arms" by Carl L. Duaine.
From the will of Sergeant Major Lucas Caballero:
"...I declare that I was married to Dona Juana de Barraza, legitimate daughter of the Captain Juan de Barraza and Margarita de la Pena, citizens of the town of Santiago Papasquiaro in the Kingdom of Nueva Vizcaya from which I recieved a dowry of 4,000 pesos in reales, the value of a vineyard, two slaves, and other properties. Finding myself poor,I did not dowry our two daughters, Ignacia and Maria.
...I declare that to Maria, my daughter who married Francisco Rodriguez de Montemayor, I paid 300 pesos which was the value of the slave, and to the other daughter Ignacia, I owe the same amount."
According to the book, Lucas was born about 1620 in Pueblo de los Angeles and was the son of Pedro Caballero and Margarita Rodriguez.

Re:Captain Juan de Barraza
Dear Catherine,
Pardon the delayed reaction response. Thank you very much for the information. I'll see if I can get my hands on a copy of "With All Arms."
I'm pleased to confirm that Captain Juan Barraza has now entered my family tree through a lateral line. On 13 February 1683, Juan's daughter, Maria Barraza, married Alonso Perez Melero, originally from Villa de Ximena, Reinos de Castilla. Ximena (now Jimena) is near Jaen in Andalusia.
One of my ancestors Vicente Perez Melero was born in 1703, and he is almost certainly a child of Alonso Melero and Maria Barraza. As soon as I confirm Vicente's paternity, I will become a direct descendant of Captain Juan Barraza.
Have you traced your ancestry back to Captain Barraza?
Best regards. Javier

Re:Captain Juan de Barraza
Javier,
You are very welcome for the info...I hope that it is of some use to you. I purchased the book "With All Arms" at Borderlandsbooks.com.
I have not yet traced our families connection to Captain Juan de Barraza. But Vicente Perez Melero is my husbands 7th great grandfather. He is a descendant of Vicente's through his maternal Favela ancestors of Santiago Papasquiaro. Assuming you are referring to the same individual(our Vicente married a Maria Ramirez and they had 3 children that I know of:Josepha Ma. de los Dolores, Joseph Manuel, and Ma. Juana Rita), and you confirm Vicente's father to be Alonso, then it will also prove our families connection to Juan de Barraza. Good luck and let me know what you find. You may email me privately if you wish. You sent me a great deal of info on the Favela family last year(which is where I derive the info on Vicente)and probably have my email address.
Take Care,
Cathy

Re:Captain Juan de Barraza
Hi Cathy,
Nice to meet you again. I'd forgotten about our correspondence last year.
I took another look at your husband's family tree, and yes, he and I are both descendants of Vicente Perez Melero & Aranzazu Ramirez. I didn't realize we had that common family connection.
I've just taken my research from the 18th to the 17th Century, so I am certain to find many new connections between your husband and me. I'll keep you posted on developments at your private email.
Best regards,
Javier

Re:Captain Juan de Barraza
Hey Javier,
Found anything to connect Alonzo Peres Melero and Maria de Barraza to Vicente yet? I have found info on 5 children of Alonzo and Maria...but so far no info specific to Vicente. Let me know if you have had any luck.
Take Care,
Cathy

Yes, my ancestor was the daughter of Captain Juan Barraza and Michaela Calahorra:
Valle de Allende March 16, 1697, Francisco Xavier, Spanish legitimate son of Don Captain Bernardo Asque y Armendaris and Ma. del Hierro was baptized with water by emergency, I later baptized him formally with holy oils. Godfather: Lieutenant Domingo Javier Mercado of Parral.
Juana de Dios Barraza Calahorra born about 1710 Valle de Allende, Chihuahua or Villa Ocampo, Durango.
In 1723 two slaves, Ines Bolanos and her daughter Micaela Bolanos, filed a legal action against their owner, Joseph Armendariz and his wife for mistreating them.
Joana de dios Barrasa married Juan Francisco Asque y Armendariz September 1, 1729 Villa Ocampo, Durango: his parents: Captain Bernando de Asque Y Armendariz/Beatris del Hierro, hers: Captain Juan de Barrasa/Micaela de Calahorra. Witnesses Bernabe Ugarte and Captain Joseph Aguirre. Very faded document, partially illegible, possibly stating the groom was the widower of (illegible perhaps Maria, or Juana) Sambrano.
first born Pedro Francisco Antonio Asque Barraza baptised July 10, 1730 Valle de Allende: “Spanish infant legitimate son of Juan Francisco Asque Armendaris and Juana de Dios Barraza, neighbors of this jurisdiction, godparents Pedro Vejar and Regina Hierro, his wife, Spaniards and neighbors of this valley.”
Maria Ascue Armendaris Barrasa December 19, 1731 Valle de Allende: “Spanish infant legitimate daughter of Juo. Franco. de Ascue Armendares and Juana de Dios Barrasa, godparents Miguel M(illegible, perhaps Moreno), and Maria Sapien.”
Visente Joseph Ramon baptised Valle de Allende November 30, 1733: “Armendaris Barraza Spanish legitimate son of Juan Francisco Armandaris/Juana de Dios Barrasa, godparents Joseph Sapien and Maria Gertrudis Moreno.” Vicente Ramon de Armendaris married Maria Eujenia de C, March 21, 1759 Villa Ocampo, Durango. Marriage document almost completely illegible due to water damage. I can make out someone was Spanish, and that the couple needed a dispensation because they were so closely related, and “daughter of Francisco Armendaris and Juana de Dios Barrasa.”
Joan Mariano Ramon Armendaris Barraza baptised Valle de Allende January 2, 1737: “Joan Mariano Ramon Armendaris, Spanish, legitimate son of Joan Francisco Armendaris and Juana de Dios Barrasa, padrinos Joseph Francisco Sambrano/Maria Gertrudis Enrriquez.”
Our direct ancestor Anna Maria Simona Armendariz Barraza baptised November 6, 1740 Valle de Allende: “Anna Maria Simona, Spanish legitimate daughter of Juan Francisco Armendaris and Juana de Dios Barraza, godparents Eugenio Manuel Barraza/Juana Juachina Armendariz, all neighbors of this jurisdiction.”
Apparently, the Armendariz and Barraza families roamed the region freely. Husband Juan Francisco Armendariz was born in Chihuahua, wife Juana de Dios Barraza was born in Durango, they were married in Durango, their daughter, our direct ancestor, Maria Simona Armendariz Barrasa was born in Chihuahua.
Maria Simona’s brother Vicente Ramon Armendariz Barrasa was married in 1759 back in Villa Ocampo, Durango. Sister Ana Maria Armendariz Barrasa was born in Valle de Allende, Chihuahua, married in 1770 back in Durango.

Re:Captain Juan de Barraza
Buenas tardes. Javier Avitia y Catalina Gutierrez Barraza. Lucio Quintero Corral.
