I don't know if i'm looking in the right place, but i am trying to find out information on the Yaqui indians. I have a friend who's great-grandmother was Yaqui. Her birthday is coming up and i'd like to provide her with some information on this tribe. I personally know nothing of them, do they still exist? if so, where particularly? We are in El Paso, TX. I am very interested in finding some artifacts from this tribe (i.e. garb, pottery etc..) Thank you for anyone who can provide me with information, or point me in the right direction.

You may want to contect UTEP and the University Of Arizona which I believe is at Tucson. Both have extensive archival material on the Native American Peoples of Mexico and the Southwest U. S. Yaquis were found in the State of Sonora, Mexico and were contemporaries of the Apache whose homelands were in the states of Chihuahua and Sonora in Mexico as well as in the vast "Apacheria" territories located in what are now the states of Arizona, New Mexico and a part of west Texas. Does documentation exist as to this lady's birth. It is a federal offense to possess certain artifects of our early native ancesters, so please take care of who you deal with and do not get sold on immitations

Thank you for your information. I'll head down to UTEP next week. I have no idea if there's documentation on her birth, but i can easily find out from my friend. Thanks also on the tip about getting artifacts and such. I never would have realized that; but makes sense. :O) Have a great day.

Yaqui people are originally from the Yaqui Valley in the state of Sonora. Persecuted by the dictatorship of Portfilio Diaz many fled to southern Arizona in the early 1900's . They settled in small communities that still exist today around Tucson and Phoenix, Az. Federal Government recognized them as tribe in 1972 I believe and they have a small reservation outside of Tucson, Az. The Arizona tribe is known as the Pascual Yaqui tribe. Hope this info helps, for more info you could contact the tribe directly they are list in the Az.telephone directory under government section.

The Yaqui Indian tribe is a Fed. government recognised native american indian tribe located in southern Arizona. The tribe is known as the Pascua Yaqui tribe. The tribe's original homeland is the Yaqui Valley in the Mexican state of Sonora. Tribal members began arriving in So. Arizona as refugees in the early 1900's. The tribe is well known for their beautiful Deer Dance. For more information I would try contacting the University of Arizona or the tribal offices both of which are in Tucson , Arizona. Hope this helped.

Hi, I was doing some searching on message boards under the surname of Estrella, and I remember there being a lot of info on the Yaqui Indians. I read quite a few of the messages and recall one in particular about retrieving info from the tribe and access to the right dept. of the government. Good Luck!
