My ancestry (as far as I know) began somewhere in Chihuahua, Mexico. I am looking for any links to these names "Frescas-Piñon" or "Martel-Martínez" to try to link to my patrilineal or matrilineal roots. I am a 3rd generation-born American of Mexican descent. The name "Martel" would indicate some French ancestry and the name "Piñon" is of Spanish origin as are "Morales", "Frescas" and "Martínez." My maternal Grandfather's name was Cruz Martínez-Martel and his wife (my Grandmother) was Altagracia Martínez de Piñon. My paternal Grandfather's name was Antonio Morales Martínez, and my paternal Grandmother's name was María Morales de Frescas. My paternal grandfather was born in La Unión, New Mexico. My maternal grandfather was born in Chihuahua but was raised in southern Arizona when he was very young. Both my grandmothers were born in Chihuahua.

The only Granillo in my database from Chihuahua City was Cornelia who was married to Juan Frescas Morales in the late 1800's. He was born in Santa Isabel. I have nothing on Cornelia but the name.

Rosalia Jaques married Jorge Balderrama (born in El Saus,Chic). They are the grandparents of my 97 year-old father-in-law, still living. They had 3 children , Augustine, Jesus and Jesusita. Agustine (born in 1858, Chic, Chi), is my father-in-law's father. According to my father-in-law, Rosalia was french and she was born with white hair. Any relation?

Hi - I am not familiar with the town in Chihuahua that your father-in-law's relatives came from. Is it an abbreviation ? All of the Jacques families that I have traced appear to be of Basque origin (not exactly French or Spanish). They have been in Chihuahua for at least 250 years or more. My great grandfather Jaques was described as having white hair and sky blue eyes as an older man. No one said whether he was born with white hair. Some little blond babies (I was one) have hair so light that it appears white when they are young. Alas, it gets darker as we mature (and then goes white again when we are old!

My immediate family on my grandmother's side were from the town of General Frias which is about a half hour drive west of Chihuahua City. It was formerly known as Santa Isabel. Her relatives began emigrating from Santa Isabel to Texas and New Mexico after about 1870. The earliest known Jacques in the town lived in the mid 1700's. The parish records only begin in the early 1800's. Before that we have to find our ancestors records in the Court records and the land records. Good luck to you in your research.

Hi Andy,
Checking with my 97year old father-in-law, his father Agustin Balderrama was born in Santa Isabel. Both of Augustin's parent, Rosalia Jaques and Jorge Balderrama were born (or from) Santa Isabel. He does not remember any sibling of Rosalia, although she may have had some. There is a possibility that there is a relation.
