Is it "Dawson" or "Dawson City?"

I have been working on my family genealogy for 25 years or so, and during that time I have developed a desire for accuracy that borders on an obcession. In that context, I have a question regarding a place name that has been driving me crazy because I cannot figure out which name is correct.

Was my father born in "Dawson" or "Dawson City?" I have found the city name stated both ways, with both supposedly correct and from credible sources, but can anyone here resolve my frustration with a definitive answer to the question, please? I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can straighten me out, and tell me what the OFFICIAL name of the town is. . . .if there IS a single official name. Thanks for the help

Sometime there is no absolute -
One could go to Dawson
or to City of Dawson -
It has the designation of City - so perhaps the correct term.
eg. Vancouver - or City of Vancouver .

Surnames: Boyce, O'Connor (Connors), Laughrey (Laughrea), Camden
Most definitely the site was referred to as 'Dawson City" by all the placer miners. My own great-granduncles (Patrick A and Peter E Boyce) were lucky to be two of only a few who made good on their gold claims. They, both, reinvested their hard-earned money into real estate in Snohomish and Monroe, Washington. Additionally, Patrick A Boyce was a railroad man going way back, and the railroad built two lines across his lands. Naturally, the railroads paid a handsome number to Patrick A Boyce for adequate egress across his properties, however, the vast majority of his earning came for the Dawson City claim's office.

I saw your post & recall that my grandfather always referred to it as 'Dawson City'. He lived there from 1911-1915.

I am not sure of your time frame but you might find a facebook site that I created of interest to you.
