hi I'm trying to find the family of leonard joseph sumpter who in the second world war was one of the famouse dam busters. his wife who he met while training in canada is/was ( not sure if she is still alive) hilda who came over to england and married len. they had a daughter jaquline. they moved to london after the war before they moved tyo canada. I think len who passed away a few years ago was my grandmothers cousin but I'm not sure. I do know that she was contacted by either hilda or jaquline requesting information on the family but when she died the lketter was never found. If you are hilda or jaquline or know of them please get in touch.

I am replying to message on Leonard Joseph Sumpter and would really like to get some info on him and his family if you know of anyone. Its a long story, but my mother (Marjorie) from PEI, Canada also was married to Leonard Joseph Sumpter during WW2 and had a son, who is my brother Leonard. They had met during the war while he was on training in Canada and were married in PEI in 1942. I was quite surprised when I found this message because we never new of a Hilda or Jaqueline. My brother never new his dad because he left them and went back to England during the war, never to be heard from other than he had met someone else and getting married. Very sad and my mom would never speak about it. She loved him dearly and was so hurt that she would never speak of it. Pictures were destroyed and she basically closed the book on that chapter of her life. Anyway, would love to chat about all of this and hopefully you get this message. If anyone else sees this message and knows of the Sumpters, please get in touch with me. It has always been a mystery to my brother and I know he would love to hear about his family. He did go to England back in late 1999, looked up name, found out that Leonard Joseph had passed away. I always thought it strange that Leonard Joseph never searched for his son, my brother Lenny. My mom remarried and moved to the states and that is where we have all grown up. Hope to hear from someone. Thanks

hi crousie11,
our leonards do sound very familiar, did your brother find the death records for len in england because he died in canada, I have just found the envelope that hilda or jacc sent the letter in and the post mark is Turner Valley, I have moved house and I am still trying to find all my paper work but I do have a newspaper cutting about len because either before or after he died his medals were sold and I think made £250,000 which is why it made the papers, as soon as I have more info I will let you know and if you have anymore please let me know because I am curiose to know if they are the same man. bye for now

Hi Purdie, So sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but I never really thought I would get a reply since your first email was back in 2005. So glad you replied............
Anyway, Leonard Joseph Sumpter is indeed the same man and the father of my brother, Leonard David Sumpter (Crouse). Leonard was one of the DamBusters. He married my mother (Marjorie MacLean)in Prince Edward Island in 1942 during the war and my brother was born that year. Lenny (brother) is 63 years old and as never known anything about Sumpter relations and has been very curious for most of his life. Kind of sad..............BUT, things were different back in WW2...........lots of hearts broken Im sure. Lenny actually found out about the sold medals and told me about the medals about a month ago. He travels a lot with his job and met someone from England who did some research on Leonard and found out about the medals. My brother said he would have loved to have one of those medals just for keepsake. My relatives in Prince Edward Island say that Lenny is the image of his father, Leonard Joseph Sumpter. I would really enjoy hearing about any info you might have. I also am going to mention to Lenny that I have been emailing you and he might possibly want to email you also. I think this is so wonderful after all this time that we have contact with someone who know a little about the Sumpters. Is Jaqueline still living and if so, where is she?? Please keep in touch...........

Hi again, that's great news that me andyour brother are related, my grandmother never spoke ofyour brother only of hilda and jaquiline. I am still trying to work out the relationship between len and my grandmother I know they are related because it was her that told me of him but at the time I was young and now to my regret wasn't interested in my family tree it wasn't until after she passed away I became interested. I am also currently in contact with another lady from england who also thinks that she is related to len but has the same problem as me as to working out just how she is related.I would be pleased to talk to your brother if he is willing. by the way my name is craig. how canI give you my e-mail address without everyone else getting it?. to wet your whistle and I am assuming we have the same my great great great great great grand fathers name was Thomas Sumpter born in 1735 and died in 1813 and was married to maria hollyoak. the house I am living in now is a couple of streets away from where len was born in 1911 I don't know his parents names but his mothers maiden name was cooper, once I have his parents names I should be able to put him in my tree, is your mother still alive maybe she could help. I havn't been ableto find hilda or jaquiline but to be honest I don't think I really know how because they live in canada so I don't know where to start. that's about it for now it's 1.48 in the morningand I have to be up at 6.30 to go to work.
hope to hear from you soon
all the best

Hi Craig, sorry for not getting back to you sooner but life can be busy. I spoke with my brother, Lenny, and he would really like to speak to you. I read him your email on where you live 2 streets from where his dad (Len) was born. He told me to give you his email and his work #. I am so excited for both of you and I think it will mean so much to my brother to speak to someone associated with that side of his family. As I said before, my mom (deceased) and Len Sumpter were married in 1942 in Prince Edward Island, Canada while he was in the Air Force. Its a long story from that point on but hopefully you and Lenny can talk it over. My grandmother in PEI told me a small bit about the whole thing..........Len Sumpter left my mom and brother and they were to join him in England at a later date. From that point on, no one ever really wanted to talk about it....it became a closed book in my moms life. I do know that Len's parents in England kept in touch with my mom and would send Lenny presents but only lasted a short time. From what my aunts and uncles from PEI told me is that Lenny is the exact image of his father Len. Anyway.....here is Lennys work # and email address. He lives in Vermont. 802-828-4861 and if no answer, PLEASE leave him a message where he can reach you.
Email is lcrouse@bishca.state.vt.us
Keep in touch and I hope you read this email soon.
Take care and have a great holiday season.....Diana
