Re: trying to find my sumpter relations
Hello Sharon, It is so amazing to read all these comments. Unfortunately, my brother Len never knew his dad or that he had a sister Jacqueline but the good news is that Len and jacqueline have been in touch and it is so exciting for both of them, though I'm sure Jacqueline was quite surprised finding this out. I am so glad that I found this site 5 years ago and answered Craig's message. Jacqueline never knew she had a brother because Leonard (father) kept it from Hilda and Jacqueline. Leonards parents knew of the marriage and my brother, and they sent letters and baby clothes to my mom from England for quite awhile and then there was no contact agagin accept a letter from Leonard saying he met someone else and was staying in England. My mom would never talk about it and my gram told me a bit over the years and said my mom was so hurt and devastated when Leonard sent letter from England saying he did not want her or my brother to come to England.....he had met someone else. My grandparents destroyed any trace of him in their home and their lives. Truthfully....I think he was selfish and cruel to have never spoken of this to anyone other than his parents. My God...he had a son!!! Oh well....can't turn the clock back. Len (my bro) mentioned that Hilda passed away last year so probably a good thing she never knew of this. Leonard and my mom were married in 1942 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. There is a record of the marriage. Anyway, this should become a movie or a book...lol. I could go on and on and on but I don't have enough space here. I am just so glad I followed through trying to find relations for my brother. All I did was Google Leonard David Sumpter and this site came up with Craig's message. Take care and please keep in touch.

Re: trying to find my sumpter relations
Hello Diana.
Sorry to be slow in replying to you. Sharon alerted me to the fact you responded to her email.
My regret is that I never met Daisy (Hilda) before she died. I had a few telephone conversations with her and planned to go and visit her in Luton. My mother (her cousin) Mollie wanted to talk to her as they were close when they were young. It can't be long after that there was no reply from her phone number and I dreaded that she had passed on, so Mollie never did get to talk to her again.
So I have no link to Len Sumpter except through Hilda Rose's family and I'm not sure if I can add anything too much.
I've got no doubt that Len knew me (I was born in 1941) and I ended up in living in his house in Elmers End, Beckenham. The Rose family were very close and nearly all lived in the same road or close by. The war interrupted lots of things and Len and Hilda were based up in Lincolnshire, she at Woodhall Spa, I believe she told me, and Len at Scampton where I was living as well, as my father was based there with my Mum. We had a lot of access to the airfield which seems strange to me now and I was taken onto Wellington and Lancaster bombers by aircrew. Strange that this Scampton connection brought the 2 Rose cousins close but that is what a war can do I suppose.
I used to go with one of my cousins and play at Len and Hilda's house near Anerley Station in South London. He was working in a biggish engineering company. This was shortly after the war when things has settled down, really early '50s period, again I don't remember seeing him though he was in the house.
So that's really all I can add.
My mother told me that there was an almighty argument with Daisy's dad ('Joe') who kicked her out of the house and it was a long time before things healed. I think it was something to do with Len and was very serious, but she keeps forgetting what it was about. She is now nearly ninety and is probably the last of this Rose generation about. She obviously knew him well and said he was a good looking man but they were all probably like that with there uniforms on!
Jacqueline (Jackie) I know very little of. I have heard only of her through my cousin Shirley. It must have been a shock to her to here she had a brother in Canada.
We assume Len never told Daisy? Strange things are kept secret in marriages that perhaps she didn't want to tell her or as you believe, she didn't know anyway.
Was the marriage Len and your mother officially ended or did he just come back to England and remarry again hoping nobody would find out in the future?
Well good luck and interesting to get in touch with you. Small world with the internet.
