Hi Megan,

Your great-grandparents, Wasyl and Paraska, were from the village of what is known today as Lesivka, Bohorodchans'kyi raion, Ivano-Frankivs'ka oblast, Ukraine. https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Lesivka,+Ivano-Frankivs'...

Church records of births, marriages and deaths are available for the village of Lesivka, starting from 1784 to 1907. These records will contain detailed information about your ancestors, likely dating back another 6 or more generations.

If you're interested in researching this type of information, I'll provide you with more detail on how to go about it.

Regards,

Richard

Hello Megan,

Although I'm not familiar with your Stefanyshin family, I was able to determine the village where your great-grandparents (Wasyl and Paraska/Parascevia) were from.

Church records of births, marriages and deaths exist on microfilm for Łesiówka (Bohorodczany), Galizien, Austria; later Łesiówka (Stanisławów), Stanisławów, Poland; presently known as Lesivka, Bohorodchans'kyi raion, Ivano-Frankivs'ka oblast, Ukraine. These records will contain information about your family dating back several generations.

The microfilm can be ordered from the Family History Centre of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) and viewed at one of their many FHC locations worldwide. Detailed information on the contents of the Lesivka Greek Catholic church records from 1784 to 1907 can be found at https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/1256785. For the most part, these records are written in Latin, but may be interspersed with Ukrainian, Polish, or Russian. You need to order microfilm number 2392057.

The microfilm is available for viewing at a nominal rental (about $8.00 per reel) for a 90-day loan period, or $16.00 per reel for an indefinite loan. You can order it online and have it delivered to your local LDS Family History Centre. In some major cities, your public library may also be a designated Family History Centre.

Ordering the microfilm:

1. To locate a Family History Centre nearest you, visit: https://www.familysearch.org/locations.

2. Telephone your centre to inquire about ordering the microfilms. Some locations will let you place an order by phone or by visit, while other locations will ask you to order online Also ask your centre if you can obtain copies of the microfilm images using a USB drive, or whether you will need a digital camera

3. If you are ordering online, you must first register for a Family Search account at: https://ident.familysearch.org/cis-web/pages/registration/re.... Then, place your order online at: https://familysearch.org/films/.

4. When your order has been delivered, your local centre will contact you. When you visit the centre to view the microfilms, bring a USB drive or digital camera with you so that you can get copies of the images. The centre will hold the microfilms until you are finished, or until the loan period has expired.

The following website contains actual examples of church records, and describes their layout and content. I highly recommend that you visit http://halgal.com/vitalrecords.html. This will be invaluable when you start to review the church records from Lesivka.

I would also encourage you to join the Ukrainian genealogy forum at Ukraine.com and post you inquiry there as well. You will find a great deal of help and support from members who are knowledgeable and experienced in genealogy research from the same region. You can register at http://www.ukraine.com/forums/register.php. If self-research doesn't interest you, there are some excellent genealogy researchers based in Ukraine who are also members of this group who can assist you.

Wishing you success in your ancestral search!

Richard
