Thanks for this extensive research. I hope you already had it and did not go out and do this just for me. I see a couple of things different than what I found. Confirm it is Ann Hume (not Flume) and Thomas Hepburn's mother was Jennet Laughton (not Langston). I have a couple of leads on the family in the Rouleau SK area and am awaiting replies. Again thanks for all your work, much appreciated.

Mike, I think Jürgen Mundt has written you already. He wrote me as well requesting the same obituaries. I have had success getting William and Ernest Mundt's obituaries (from the Weyburn Review), but in checking today in the Review I could not find Ottilie's obituary. Perhaps it was in the Feb. 10, 1988, edition which is missing several pages on the film. Or else maybe she died in Regina or some other place (her daughter was in Regina).
If anyone can help, please let me or Mike know. Maybe the church has an obituary or funeral folder in its files, at least a record of the funeral and the date and other info.
Ottilie was a BUCHHOLZ (daughter of Julius).

Hello Stella thanks for responding,

I have not been able to find registration of death (I havent sent out for it yet) with the approximate year I think she may have died. I havent found an obituary and dont know where she was buried or for how long she lived in Saskatchewan (or if thats where she died).

The 1916 census does help a bit because it lists Pearl Hadwen Butt with her husband. I have no information on John H. Butt and don't know where to start!! I have a feeling his family may of came from England however the census says he was born in Ontario. I would love to find out more on his 2 children, I'm assuming, he had with a woman before Pearl. They are George Butt (only info on him is that he "died in a snowstorm") and Ruth Butt (only info on her is that she lived in the U.S.A.).

Pearl was a loving woman (as family say), she had a hard life but was a warm person. She had 3 children with John H. Butt:

Geraldine Butt Farthing, married Charles "Charlie" Farthing and they last lived in England. Charles has died but Geraldine was still living in 2005 when she was mentioned in her son, Sonny Farthing's obituary. I haven't had much luck in tracking her down, she was known to have lived in Bury St. Edmunds, England. I believe she may have been the oldest and if she is still living she may be in a retirement home.

born William Henry Butt (he later began spelling his name Butts)on November 10, 1921 in Cabri, Saskatchewan he trained in the military. William "Bill" died in Ottawa, Ontario on September 11, 1985. Buried at Notre Dame Cemetery (Ottawa).

John Butt (my grandfather) was born in Cabri, Saskatchewan on May 5, 1935. He also trained in the military. John died on November 5, 1974 in Ottawa, Ontario. He is buried at Pinecrest Cemetery (Ottawa) with no gravestone.

No one knows what happened to John H. Butt or Pearl Hadwen Butt, the reason I think she may have died around 1951 is because my grandfather John, at age 16, went to live with his brother William and his wife Anita after Pearl died.

Any kind of help would be appreciated!! I attached the only photo of Great-Grandma Pearl I have found. I've never seen a photo of John H. Butt.

Looking for any info on this family. 1906 MA/SK/AB Census shows them in the Weyburn/Kronau area and 1916 same Census shows them in the Qu'Appelle/Wilcox area and using the Rouleau Post Office. He is originally from Scotland (1838) and she is from the Ottawa area. First wife may have been Catherine SAMPLE with whom he had a large family, then he may be the same HEPBURN with Isabella in Missouri (1877 >>>) where then had a large family and came back to Canada between 1900-1906. Any leads appreciated. Regards,

Lynn and Linden may go by Lin or Lynn and Charles goes by the name of Pete. Lynn and Lin immigrated from south Dakota to halbrite in 1910s-1920's era I believe and pete is my grandfather who lives in weyburn now.

I'm not entirely certain myself about U.S. census practice, but in both instances (1900, 1910), she is unequivocally reported as head of household -- and in 1910 she is reported as holding the homestead property free without mortgage. So at least in 1910-1911 she seems strongly connected to homesteads on both sides of the border!

Dear Mr. Peterson -- Thanks ever so much! I think I've been able to extract all of the pertinent data from the information you provide...

John, Amelia Vandegrinten and Emma Dow appear in the 1906 Census, with Charles Huttner (Amelia's youngest brother, born in 1885) a member of the household as a hired man. John, Amelia, and Emma appear again in 1911, with a son, Alwood, age 7, and a domestic William Barclay. Amelia Vandegruten, "formerly Amelia Dow," meanwhile also had a nearby homestead claim. Since Amelia appears again in the 1916 census, marital status single, presumably she and John parted between 1911 and 1916.

The mystery remains that the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Censuses find Amelia with another two of her brothers in Burke County, North Dakota! Bowbells ND and Weyborn are not a geographically a great distance apart -- about a 100 miles and there may have been a direct train connection -- but was Amelia slipping back and forth across the border tending simultaneous homestead claims in both the U.S. and Canada?

A surname information note on the 1911 Census record suggests a source for the "correct" spelling of the "Vande..." name: "Amelia & John Vandegrinten family in "Tyvan: As it Was in the Beginning", 1987, p 51. online @ourroots.ca".

Is there anyway to know what is said there, assuming it is short enough to be a "snippet"? My purposes are entirely private and informational only! If not, I'll see if my library can locate a loan copy.

Thank you again .... Gratefully, Sid [hyphen] Huttner at uiowa dot edu.

Think I found them in the 1911 census, but spelled Vandergrunton. http://automatedgenealogy.com/index.html A note says Amelia had a homestead on SE34 Township 12, Range 14, West of the 2ND Meredian. http://www.saskhomesteads.com/search.asp In the SHIP records the name is spelled Vandegrunton (missing R), but just put in the land location and her name will show up.
Amelia Huttner Dow Vandergrinten

I'd be most grateful for any information on a grand aunt who is reported in the 1916 Canada Census as Amelia Vandergrinten, b. 1874, age 42, "arrived 1904" [I'm not sure what this means!] and resides at 12, Weyburn, Sask. (Twp. 12-13 ranges 14-16, W.2.m., including town of Francis). Her marital status is single, but she lives with a daughter, Emma Dow, age 20, and three boarder/farm workers (some of whom also seems to be students).

I know that she was born in October 1874 in Winona County, Minnesota as Amelia H. Huttner; both her parents had been born in Prussia. In the 1880s the family moved to Wilkin County, MN, and on 10/29/1896 she there married Fred Dow, delivering almost immediately a daughter Emma.

In 1900 the U.S. Census locates her (as Amelia Dow) in Twp. 163 Ward County (later Burke County), living with her daughter Emma Dow and two younger brothers. In 1904 she proved a homestead claim (163N 090W SW 1/4 section 33 in northeastern Burke County), and in 1910 is reported owning the farm free of mortgage, with her daughter and brothers still residing with her (they were both soon to break out and homestead on their own).

I have an undated photograph, apparently taken on the day of her second wedding, that identifies her as "Mrs. John Vandergrinten." Laurence and Joseph Vandergrinten homesteaded in Burke County about this time, but I do not find mention of John. The marriage seems to have taken place after 1910 and before 1916. One much abbreviated ancestry.com record suggests she had a second child with John, but quickly parted his company, John going on to another marriage that produced a further three children. He died in Regina in 1951.

I would particularly like to know if Amelia left tracks of interest in Weyburn; did she remain there long past 1916? -- and what happened to Emma: did she marry and whom? Remain in Saskatchewan? -- and is there a record of the name and gender of the/an Amelia-John child?

How to research all this short of extended travel isn't obvious to me, although I'm a recently retired academic librarian, but ideas would certainly be welcome!

Anyone who would like to contact me directly is welcome to do so at sid [hyphen] huttner at uiowa [period] edu.

I'm seeking information on my Great-Grandmother Pearl Joyce Hadwen Butt born around 1895 in Vaughan, Ontario but resided in Saskatchewan since around 1907.

She married John H. Butt by 1916 and still lived in Saskatchewan, it is also possible that she died there around the year 1951. Any information that can be provided to me in this query would be greatly appreciated.

Information on John H. Butt would also help. He had 2 children with an unknown (as of yet) woman, George Butt and Ruth Butt. He also had 3 children with Pearl Hadwen Butt.

Thanks for letting know about Reinhard Halfman, but my mother Christine, daughter of Mary Honnef never mentioning him living there but in southern Saskatchewan. She told me Joseph Halfman lived near Plenty, Sask. not Windthorst. Plenty is in the southwest and Windthorst in the southeast part of Sask. She told me he was found murdered in a granary he used as his home.It was never solved.I will be going soon to local archives to get his homestead papers as got location from local Morman church 32 28 W3. The Honnefs are buried in Mackague cemetary close to Barford, Sask.( Barford is no more)?? Reinhard buried in Elgin,NE.
