Erik and Emma Gustavson

Hi!
I'm searching for a couple from Sweden, Erik Gustavson was born 24 July 1871 and Emma Goranson was born 28 July 1881. Erik left Sweden in 1893, but came back in 1902 for a short time, to bring his father and young wife. His father was Gustaf Larson born 15 May 1842. The young couple has no marriage record in Sweden, but in the passengerslist she's listed as Emma Gustavson, not her birthname Goranson, so it's possible they quickly got married in Trondheim before they got on the boat.
Emma had three sisters that came to USA and Canada as well.
Erik and Emma was going to Winnipeg, but strangely his father Gustav was listed going to Fleming, Canada, I don't know where Fleming is.

All three of them came from the same village as I do, with a population of 145 people, named Nordannälden in Jämtland, in the middle of Sweden.

Hope someone can help me!
Thanks/Erika Öhnstedt, Nordannälden, Sweden

Erika,
I don't know if this is helpful or not, but there was an Erick Gustafson, b. 1875 living in Wetaskiwim, Alberta in 1901. I think it's interesting mainly because he's living next door to a Larsen family. The Larsons are in household # 181 and Eric is in #182.

Erick and the Larson parents are all mentioned as being born in Sweden, but the Larson children are born in the USA> The Larsons entered Canada in 1898 and Erick in 1899.

By 1911 the Larsons are in Strathcona district in Alberta.

By the way, there is a little town called Fleming, Saskatchewan and one in Ontario also. You can find them at:

However, I couldn't find Gustav Larson in the 1911 census.

Today, Fleming is located in Weyburn region of the province of Saskatchewan, near the Manitoba border. In fact at one time it was considered part of Manitoba. The legal description of Fleming is in township 13, range 30, West of the prime Meridian. This is a map showing the location.
http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Eskwheat/broadview1924.gif

Most likely they all went to Winnipeg, which was a major immigration center, then traveled west to Fleming from there.

There is a 1904 land grant for Erick Gustafson in township 13 range 29, west of the prime meridian. This would place this area about 6 miles east of Fleming.

Also a 1911 land grant for Gustaf E. Larsen in township 18, range 2, west of the 2nd meridian. Can locate this area on the map above. [This is a bit SE of Dubuc, but is not indicated on the map; There was an Ohlen Post Office in that area that closed in 1910.]

Be aware there is also a 1915 land grant for an Erik Albert Gustafson, township 50, range 5, west of the 3rd meridian, so this would not be the same Erek Albert Gustafson who would have only been about 8 years old in 1915.

Yes, this is the right Eric and Emma Gustafson! Is there any way to find out more about them and is there any way to find living descendants?

I also have another question here. Is there a place named Leangle in Canada? I have a note that Emmas sister Kristina Göransson born on 31 October 1878 died in Leangle, Canada in 1984. She was married to a man with the lastname Ekberg.

They hade two more sisters that came to America, Martha who went to McIntosh, Minnesota, and Maria but I don't know where she went.

Thanks for all the help!
/Erika

Do you have any other first or middle names for Maria? Do you have the information about when she left her home parish in Sweden? Any small bit of information might help.

Have you found information about Martha in Minnesota?

The Goranson sisters

Ok, here is what I have on the sisters.

Marta Göransson was born on 21 August 1868 and she left for McIntosh, Minnesota on 1 May 1901, travelled alone to go to her cousin Jon Öman who was a restaurant owner there, in business with my great grandfather's uncle Krist Noren. I have a contact in McIntosh who's helping me to find Marta, but this far we have nothing yet. So that's all I know about Marta.

Maria Göransson was born on 25 March 1874 and she left for North America on 25 March 1901 together with her husband Arvid Johansson Tirén born on 15 June 1872. I don't know if they came to USA or Canada, and I don't know wich lastname they used.

Kristina Göransson was born on 31 October 1878 and married Wilhelm Ekberg, and died in Langley. She left Sweden on 31 March 1907. Did they live there long? Is it possible to find any children?

And then we have Emma. It would be great to follow them as far as possible. Was it Salcoats, Saskatchewan they lived in 1911?

Thanks for your help!

The best way to get more information about Ekberg, would be the contact someone on the voluneer RAOGK link I gave you in the previous posting. Names from obituaries and the death certificate will most likely tell you names of descendants. Once you have that information, then you could post the message board that covers Langley, BC, which is
http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.canada.british...

Canadian online phone directory includes some addresses.
http://www.mytelus.com/phonebook/index.vm
There are 3 Ekberg listings in BC and 2 for Saskatchewan. This certainly is not complete because I would think there are more people by that name in those provinces.

Saltcoats is a town but on the 1911 census, Saltcoats was a label for a census area that included the village of Dubuc where your people were living. The nearest larger town to Dubuc would be Esterhazy. You might contact the public library and ask their advice about finding someone involved in local history that might help you find Gustafson descendants. Sometimes the librarians are very helpful resulting in contact with friends or relatives. Other times a message can be ignored.
http://www.parkland.lib.sk.ca/branches/esterhazy.htm
Also, this is the link for the local genealogical society for the area that includes Dubuc.
http://www.parkland.lib.sk.ca/search.htm

I had found Marta's age on the passenger list from Trondheim so I could figure a close birthdate and did searching, but could not find anything I thought might be close.

I found records for Arvid and Maria Tyren in Logan, Aitkin County, Minnesota! I'll send you that information by email as we are getting a bit away from the Saskatchewan topic here.
