I came across the information through Find a Grave.

I know little about the family - other than from census records, am trying to see if there are any living members of the family that have any information about the Mellish ancestors.

My late in-laws knew Rob & Kathleen Smith for many years. The Smiths had no children so I phoned a former neighbor of theirs and she had put many of their pictures and information that her mother had got from them in the Lloydminster Regional Archives (they have a web site). The rumour that her mother told her was that the father (known here as Roy) had left the family (Mother and Robert Ewart) and later resurfaced in England, remarried there and had a second family. This is unproven and if Mrs. Smith knew where he had gone she never said anything.

Hi Jan

Thanks for the info, it is really helpful. I will try and contact the Lloydminster archives to see what I can find out.

I will also see whether I can find anything about Roy Mellish Smith returning to the UK.

Do you know what Rob and Kathleen did, or anything about Kathleen's family as I have not been able to find anything out about her other than birth and death details from the Find a Grave web site.

I have found the Smith story in the local history book "East of Lloydminster" page 266. The girls at the archives could probably copy it and fax it to you or the Lloydminster Library could do it.
Kathleen A. Hyde was the only child of Mr. & Mrs. J. W. Hyde. She was born in Montreal Apr. 15, 1916 and they moved near to Lashburn, Sk. in 1923. She married Rob Smith November of 1936. There is a photo of them in the history book with their story. It also stated that Robert Sr. (Roy) moved back to England but doesn't say when. It states that Robert Sr. married Ada Morris (Mossie) Robb in March of 1906. He had worked for her parents in the Neepawa, Manitoba area when he first came to Canada in the early 1880s. She had been born in Scotland and came with her family in 1877 to Bruce Co., Ontario and later to Neepawa.

Hi Jan

That is really interesting, I would love to get a copy of the information and photo, do you have a contact detail for them. I am in the UK so email would be the best way of making contact. Roy Mellish Smith's family have some interesting ancestors - one of them is John Edward Mellish who is from the USA and was a telescope maker and has crators on Mars named after him, quite a lot is available on the internet about him.

Many thanks for your help. It is strange to think of my husband having ancestors in the Lloydminster area of Canada as I visited the area when I was working on a ranch as part of an agricultural exchange to Canada in the early 1980's. Also I used to have a pen pal in the Lloydminster area - family name Garton.

The Lloydminster Regional Archives has a website which you should be able to google. It will have their contact information on it. The same goes for the Lloydminster Library. Either one would be able to help you, I am sure. It is indeed a small world.
