Hello, I am in search of information on my Great-Grandfather John H. Butt and his PARENTS. The name Butt is also sometimes spelled as Butts. I am assuming the "H" stands for Henry as one of his sons was named William Henry Butts. He was born in Ontario (I'm pretty sure) in 1875 (as his grave location states) but I have seen it as 1877 in the census of 1916.

I am looking for info on his parents. I have been looking but have not come up with anything. I'm not sure what else to do.

John H. Butt married Pearl Joyce Hadwen (Born in Ontario in 1894 according to their gravesite), she was daughter of John Edward Hadwen and Hannah Ruth Dalton. They were married by 1916 (according to the 1916 census) and were living in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. They had also lived for a time in Riverdene, Hallams Coulee as indicated in a story written in Cabri. Pearl died in 1947 and is buried in an unmarked grave in Cabri Cemetery with her husband John H. Butt who died in 1937. They had 5 children. In a post I posted a couple years ago I incorrectly stated that John H. Butt had fathered two children with a different woman but that is not the case. Their 5 children were:

William Henry Butts (1921-1985, passed away in Ottawa)

Geraldine Joyce Farthing (Butts) (1923-2013, was never able to track her down till it was too late, she died in England),

Ruth Irene Melby (Butts) (1925-2010, again was not able to track her down till it was too late she passed away in Weyburn. I had incorrectly stated in a post a few years ago that she lived in the USA but that is not the case. Those were the days when I knew even less than I do now! I am in touch with her grandson Justin who like me knows very little about John H. Butt).

John Butt (1935-1974, my grandfather, passed away in Ottawa)

George Butt (?-?) lived in a foster home in Weyburn and died in the great blizzard of 1952 when he went for a pail of water.

This is about as much information I know of John H. Butt. I am stuck in my research with him and his parents. I do have a large family tree on Pearl Hadwen's parents.

Any info that could help me would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank You,

Andrew Maheux

Thank you for your response.

Problem is I dont know how to access many of these things. I dont know if they were actually married in 1916. I assumed that they were married BY 1916 as the census has them listed as married. Without exact dates of birth and death I feel more stumped. Like without an exact death date Im not sure how I could find an obituary. Also Im not sure where I would find an obituary. I assume the Cabri Herald? Not sure how I would be able to access their newspaper archives. I live in Ottawa and have contacted all the relatives mentioned above except the children of Geraldine Farthing who I am having trouble reaching, the rest dont know anything on John H. Butt. My grandfather didnt talk about his family much as well as the others, everyone seemed to have gone their own ways except my grandfather and his brother William who remained close. There doesnt seem to be any surviving documents or photographs, my last chance for that might be with Geraldine Farthing's family.

How do I find a marriage registration if I dont know WHERE they married?

The joys of researching the past, can be difficult to know where to turn!! :P

Those are fantasic leads thank you, I feel much better now knowing where to start. I had put out a request of info about the burials of John H. Butt and Pearl on the Facebook group "Cabri Herald" a while back in hopes someone would know or photograph the grave location for me. Someone DID get back to me, a lady who said she helps run the cemetery. While the Butts dont have a grave stone, their names are included on a large stone that is full of names of those without headstones. I did ask if she could look at the burial files of the Butts for more information on dates etc. She informed me that such info is limited. I never heard back from her. So my next step as you say is to call the town of Cabri and ask them to look into the files and with that hope to find an obituary. As you say I will indeed presume the Butts married in Saskatchewan and will look into that further.

As for John H. Butt I was thinking and hoping that maybe he would show up in a census record? maybe giving the head of household etc? I know census cant always be relied upon.

Another story that intrigues me is the story of the Butts son, George Butt who was in a foster home in Weyburn and died in "the great blizzard" of 1952 when he went out to get a pail of water. It makes sense that he would be living in a foster home by 1952 since both his parents had died already (1937 and 1947). Would love to find a news story or obituary concerning his death, if one exists.

The photo I've attached is the location of the Butts resting place, the photo the lady took for me.
