This is a continuation of a post I made on the Saskatchewan General Forum "Hugh McMillan - Where Are You??".
With the release of the 1921 census, I found Hugh John McMillan (shown as John Hugh McMillan), my g-grandfather, living in Kindersley with a third wife, Sarah, and dau. by a second marriage, Florence. Also, Hugh's was actually born closer to 1864-67.

Whatever happened to Hugh after this census is unknown except that the family says he was in the bootlegging trade, which must have been after living in Kindersley. One of Hugh's sister, Elizabeth, married George McIntosh and they lived in the Kindersley area. They both are buried in the Ruthilda Cemetery. Sarah eventually ended up in Everett, WA near where I live. Florence lived in Victoria, BC and died there. No one kept records of what happened to Hugh. One of the 1930+ City Directors for Everett, WA shows Sarah as a widow, BUT, the family thinks that might not have been true and she said that for her own purposes.

I don't know if there are city directories or other reference materials that might indicate how long Hugh was in Kindersley, but if someone has a source for this information, please let me know.
Thank you,
Dan Harvey

Hello Dan:
I think we have corresponded in the past. With the names of Elizabeth McMillan and George McIntosh I now know which McMillan family you belong to. Your Gr Grandfather, Hugh John's grandmother and my gr grandfather were brother and sister. Elizabeth McMillan's and Hugh John McMillan's father John McMillan was the son of Dougald McMillan and Margaret McMillan. I do not know where Dougald was buried but Margaret was buried at St Columba Presbyterian Church, Kirkhill, Glengarry County, Ontario. It seems that John McMillan was not raised with his three brothers .. Ewen, Alexander, and Lauchlin.
I do not have any info on your Hugh John of Saskatchewan. He sounds like he had quite the life.

Hi Anne,
Good to hear from you again. I'm beginning to think we will never find out what happened to Hugh John McMillan. We missed a good opportunity some years ago with his dau., Florence McMillan-Johnston, who died in 2007 in Victoria, B.C. She did not have children and no one as far as I know ever asked her what happened to Hugh. Apparently she didn't care for him, and much of the family had the same view. Kind of a strange fellow I guess.

For the last year, on and off, I have been trying to find out who the family of his first wife, Eliza Lavina Thompson, was (my g-grandmother). I can't tell you how many Thompsons (and Thomsons) I've gone through without any luck. Although, one family I'm now researching looks like a pretty good possibility even though I've said that before, ha.

Eventually when I get some time I will pass on to you all we have gathered on the Hugh McMillan family on to you so you can add it to your genealogy.

If you don't mind, could you send me an email at this address to be sure I have your current email address: djjr7744@comcast.net

Take Care,
Dan

I found two possible burials for Hugh Mcmillan without a middle name or initial showing, one in Wapella's St. Paul and one in Weyburn mental. The one in Wapella shows birth year as 1859 and Weyburn doesn't show any. http://www.rootsweb.com/~cansacem/index.html Butch
