Charles Edgar Davis

I am looking for information on my grand fathers origins, he was born on the family farm in 1890, the farm was called Fox Leigh & Craig, of Boggy Creek he also had a brother named Frank. He joined the army and later met my grandmother Ella Mae Brown married in 1913 and resided in Regina. They had two sons William James born in 1914, and Bertrum Arnold in 1915 and my mother Mary Margret in 1917. I had been told as a child that my grandfathers parents were of Dutch origins and they landed in the states, I do not know this for a fact. Does anyone out there know of this family also the name Anticnapp rings a bell of sorts, this may have been his mothers maden name. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your posting is most interesting. I am researching the Anticknap family ( all spellings) . Three Anticknap brothers went out to Boggy Creek in the late 1800s., Two of the brothers married sisters..Emmy Davis and Elizabeth Davis, both Regina pioneers.

The brothers, Simon and Henry built the dam at Boggy Creek - 1904, which suppliedRegina with water in the early years.
Here si info from an obituary.

Obituary

The death occured on Tuesday evening last week, in the Regina districtin the person of Mr. Simon Anticknap. For the past three years thedeceased has been inflicted with cancer and every remedy available wasused to kill its growth, but without avail.
While he has a farm at Boggy Creek, yet he and Mrs. Anticknap havebeen staying in the city for the past year. Though he has undergonesevere affliction these last two years, he has borne it with greatfortitude. The funeral takes place tomorrow afternoon, at two o'clockfrom 1772 Ottawa Street. A wife, a son and two daughters are left tomourn the loss of a kind and indulgent father. Mr. Anticknap arrived inthe west in the early eighties and after some time spent on the PortagePlains, moved to the Regina district with two brothers, Joseph and Hank.He was very widely known and respected by those who knew him. The Westextends sympathy to the wife and family and sorrowing relatives.
There must be a connection...would like to hear from you Janet

Thank-you Janet for answering . There does seem to be a connection my Grandfather would have been a son to one of the daughters, who must have lived on the farm because Charles and Frank were both born on the farm. Charles was born January 4, 1890. I have his service attestation papers that gives me his birth, I have yet to find a registered birth for him. I will get ahold of the obituary from my brother, I do know that it said he was born there, that the farm was called Craig of something.(I will get the information). I do remember my grandfather telling me stories of Portage Plains, duck hunting. Looking forward to hearing from you. Ellenore

Hi - this is 12 years from your first post... But anyway. Henry Anticknap and Emmy Davis Anticknap were my great-grandparents. I had always heard that Emmy and Elizabeth, who married Simon, were sisters, but from the looks of the censuses and coordinating dates, I think Elizabeth was actually the youngest sister of Thomas Davis, Emmy's father. Emmy was the eldest child in her family. So there's a good chance that Elizabeth and Emmy were aunt and niece, not sisters.

I see mention of Anticknap Bay, named for Henry Anticknap, mentioned on page 3 of this on-line book. REGINA THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE. http://www.ourroots.ca/e/toc.aspx?id=8539 Butch

Yes, Henry Anticknap was my great-grandfather on my paternal grandmother's side (married to Emmy Davis). I lived in Regina until 2013, so I was aware of Anticknap Bay. :) My stomping grounds were more in the old part of town, Cathedral Area (or Cathedral Village).

Best regards,

Hi, I just checked my tree, and I have a Charles Edgar Davis there, son of William Davis, who homesteaded in the Boggy Creek area. He had a brother with the middle name "Francis", who might be the Frank referred to. Incidentally, Charles' grandfather was Francis Davis, and both grandparents on that line were Irish.

The Dutch from the US connection might have been through marriage into the Anticknap family. Emmy Davis, Charles' cousin (and my great-grandmother) married Henry Anticknap and Elizabeth Davis (Charles' aunt/William's sister) married Simon Anticknap. Simon and Henry's mother was Mennonite/Pennsylvania Dutch. Her family migrated north to Ontario after the American Revolution.

Thank-you for the information.
Have also learned that Pennsylvania Dutch runs in my grandfather Charles Davis' wife side of the family, the Dennis side of the family, they came from Buck, Pennsylvania. They all seem to migrate to the same area. Maybe do to their religion.
Charles and Ella May Brown Davis were my grandparents.
I was born in Regina and lived there till I was 10 then moved to British Columbia,, have been her since. Our home was about three blocks from my grandparents on Wallace Street.
