Not much info about him anywhere other than mentions in some history books, I wonder if Edam has a history book. I liked the Colwell story in the Meota book.
Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out. Dr. Sparling was practicing medicine in Edam at the time of his death in 1921. He was originally from Ontario. I believe he was in Turtleford before Edam. Edam promised him a hospital so he moved there.

Did you know Dr. Sparling was originally in Edam. He looked after patients in Turtleford, Meota and other areas. It's in http://www.ourroots.ca/e/ I used Sparling Dr. (surname first)to search the site and also Sparling Doctor ,but you can try other keywords. He's mentioned in several history books as delivering babies and other medical events. Butch

The Preeceville and Buchanan books have the most info and I don't know if they are related to you, but the stories are good reading about real pioneers that didn't let a little hardship slow them down.
You are probably aware that Joseph C. Ellis had 3 daughters. I can remember 2 of them. The youngest one stayed with my grandmother after her father's death. I believe the other two had left home before he married my grandmother.

My grandmother, Ann Smith Sparling Ellis, died in Edmonton. She was cremated and her ashes were spread on a creek running through her daughter's property in South Edmonton. A memorial plaque was attached to William Ralston Sparling's grave stone in Battleford, SK.

Yes! I am a descendent of the Ellis family. Anne Smith's 2nd husband was a brother of my Maternal Grandmother. The Ellis family is immense and the family which I am descended from lost their mother (after the birth of a 13th (I believe) child and their father approximately 4/5 years later. The children were raised by older children and other relatives and basically spread out across the continent.

For some reason, I didn't receive the usual notice that there was a reply on the Message Board. It wasn't until I got the message from Butch that I realized your reply was also there.

The article in "Tales and Trails of the Following School Districts: Blackfoot, Dayville, Lake Russell, Minnehaha, Parkdale, Picnic Lake, 1893-1978" was exactly what I needed.

I had been able to trace all of Dick's family but him. I have obituaries for his parents and all his siblings and he was always mentioned but without the name of a town. I had almost given up on ever finding him.

You have made my day! Thank you so much for taking the time to find that article for me. It is exactly what I needed.

I am looking for information about Richard Clark whose name appears on the Canadian Naturalization Index 1915-1932. He was born in Wayne Co., Iowa, USA in August 1890 a son of David and Adaline Clark. His father's obituary in November 1920 and all subsequent obituaries for other members of his family indicate that he was living in Saskatchawan.

I have been trying for a number of years to find where he lived after immigrating to Canada but have had no success until the Canadian Naturalization Index became available. The index shows: Richard Clark, USA May 5, 1920, farmer, Daysville, Sask, A 3521.

I would very much like to order the naturalization papers but proof of his death is a requirement, something I don't have.

Does anyone from the area where he apparently settled have any information about him? He is the only member of the family that I haven't been able to learn anything about. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me.

Thank you for your kind offer, but I was able to find someone who had a copy and has sent me the pages. Very interesting reading about the pioneer days. I was struck by how matter of fact the different family members were about the extremes of weather, basic shelter, and hard work for meager returns. These were tough and resourceful people. I was able to glean a few details on names of spouses and the death dates and places for George W and Lula Brownell. Much of the info is about possible living family members so I will not add that to my records.

If any of the family is interested in the photos that I have, you can reach me at gardener_plus@yahoo.com That way I can send copies back to you.

Thank you for responding to my post. I will check online to see if I can find a copy of the book you mentioned.

I have a couple of Brownell family photos that I am happy to share with other relatives. I have one of Hirum's sister, Julia Brownell Speer, who was my gg grandmother. I also have a copy of a photo of another sibling, Courtland Brownell. I also have personally taken photographs of the family monument in Kelloggsville Monroe Cemetery, Ashtabula Co, OH of their parents, Jonathan and Azubah (Hicks) Brownell. There are some other unidentified photos that I suspect may be photos of the family of brother, Alvah Brownell, in Mower, MN. Please contact me via email if there is any interest in these photos.

Chris
I have recently been contacted by Australian cousins who are descended from a Dugald Buchanan who lived at 772 100th Street (at the time he lived there the street was called Main Street). North Battleford's City building department has told me that the house, which was originally built in 1908, is still standing and occupied! I was hoping that some kind person could take a digital photo of the house and email it to me so that I could pass this on to the cousins in Oz.

Thank you!

Lori Herman
North Vancouver, BC
inmarketing@shaw.ca
Yes there are three cemetaries at the saskatchewan hospital in North Battleford but they are accessable. Just went there with my sister 5 oct 2009 to put a headstone on the unmarked grave of my grandmother, buried there since 1967...there are 1025 graves in cemetary number 3 and few of them have proper headstones.

Hi Bradley...I hope this message finds you as I never recieved yours until I read it tonight. I mistakeningly said that my grandfather lived in North Battleford but its actually Battleford. I was there a year ago, and found out that I had the wrong town.

My Johnston's are from Saskatchewan too...but...I don't believe that they hook up with your Johnstons as mine were from Scotland. They came to Canada in 1820 to Chatham NB. My Johnston's did not really settle in Saskatchewan. They never homesteaded or owned a home there. (my other grandparents did!!) After WWI my grandfather moved to Sask and became a Sask Provincial Policeman..and brought his family with him. Then after the force disbanded he became chief of police in Assiniboia, then the depression hit big time and they couldn't afford to pay him, so he went to Regina Jail until WWII started. Then he joined the war effort to fingerprint all the soldiers. After the war, he joined War Time Prices and Trade until it disbanded and then he got the job of Chief of Battleford. When he was "let go", the town had a rally to keep him..even the native population wanted him back as he was the only policeman that treated them with respect.

His brother Walter Johnston owned a funeral home in Regina called "Johnston's Funeral Home"...they also moved to the coast. From what I believe, is that we have no Johnstons left in Saskatchewan as in the early 50's they all came to the coast for work.

From what I understand, about 1700, many of the Scottish Johnston's went to Ireland to look for work...and if that is true, they our trees probably would hook up. I have not been able to track my Johnston tree in Scotland...so I have nothing before the late 1700's.

Thank you for contacting me!

They were Charles Joseph Huard Jr. (16 Dec 1883),Louis Eme Valerie Huard (03 Dec 1884- 27 Jan 1958) -my great grandfather, Camille Huard (13 Feb 1888- 1968), Eugene Huard (12 Mar 1900), and Alphonse Huard (1901)
. He emigrated to North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 1892. His family followed him in 1893. He died on 26 Sep 1914 in Saskatoon City Hospital, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was my great great grandfather. Any information about him such as his parents would be most helpful, and greatly appreciated. I have no information on were and when Charles and Eulalie got married. I have no information on Charles's ancestry. I do have info on his wife's ancestry but nothing on him. I do have records of this family in Canada but nothing in France. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer. - Thanks Brad

Brownells

The Brownells you mention settled in a small rural school district in western Saskatchewan called Cosy Nook. It is between Waseca and Neilburg. Most of my father's and mother's family also settled there. I lived there until age 8, when we moved to British Columbia.

Ralph Brownell is an uncle by marriage to my maternal aunt Emma Bellamy. Emma died in 1941 and Ralph moved to B.C.and remarried. He died in 1991. His two daughers are still alive.

Gerald also moved moved to B.C. His two sons became my good friends. One is still alive.

If you can find the book "Preserving the Past," which gives the history of Cosy Nook and other school districts in the area, there are biographies of some of the Brownells.

Tom
