I have all of these folks in my file. Your Moses Andrews married to Lydia Andrews, who would have been related as well. They had at least three kids, one of which was your Lyman that married first to Hannah Hitchcock and second to Amy Bishop. Zenas was the youngest kid by Hannah and has descendants in Michigan as well as in some western states, e.g., Washington, Oregon, California, perhaps even Alaska. Andrews, Bishop, Main, and some other families are intermarried in numerous ways, so most of these folks are cousins to me (and you) in more than one way. I'll send a message to you through the system so we can compare notes.

I'm learning that Moses may have been Lemuel Moses from CT,(son of Nathan and Ruth (Beach) who was a "Green Mountain" boy/soldier. L.Moses married Lydia (Root?).
L. Moses and Lydia's son, Lyman, was the father of Zenas, my ggggrandfather. Lyman married Hannah Hitchcock/Hickox and then remarried.

I'm looking for information about the Andrews in Dudswell, as well. On my mother's side we are related to Lemuel "Moses" Andrews who was born in Wallingford, CT, to Nathan and Ruth and died in Dudswell. His son, Lyman died (married to Hannah Hitchcock/Hickox) in Dudswell in 1842. Lyman's son Zenas emigrated from Canada back to the states (Wisconsin and Michigan).
Naphtali Bishop married Rebecca Andrews; their daughter Rebecca M Bishop married Roswell Main.

I know that I'm grasping at a whim as all the trees I find say that John and Ester Bishop's last child Lucy was born in 1999. I just thought it was possible that Ester was with child when he died and that child never got listed.

Up until last year we never knew the maiden name of my 3rd GreatGrandmother Cynthia, a death cert was found where it said her maiden name was Bishop. She shows up in the 1850 US Census as born in Canada, in the 1880 US Census she says both her parents were born in Connecticut, she was born in Canada. We assume that her parents were UEL. She is listed as being born between 1797-1802 in Canada.

She married Duncan Grant b. 1788 (again we don't know his parents or where in Canada he was born) about 1816/17. Children who were born in Canada were James 1817, John 1821, Clarissa 1823, Freeman 1828 (my 2nd GreatGrandfather), Allen, Ira 1830, Rufus 1832, Erastus 1834, Emily 1836, Merilla/Marilla 1838 and William 1840. The family moved to the US, Pennsylvania, where Aaron 1843, Allison 1843 and David 1844 were born.

The 1850 US Census show Ira, William, Marilla, Allison and David living with them. Clarissa had married a Edward Pettit b. 1818 in England, they may have married in Canada then they were living in NY in 1843, then Ohio then in PA.

The only Family Bible known does not have any other info about parents or birthplace. There are quite a few of us who are related to these folks but we all have the same Brick Wall. Thanks, Lyle D. Bishop III

PS You have the same male names as I have found, there were also Rachel, Sarah, Ruby, Sally and Urania.

Esther Andrews Bishop was a sister of my ancester Neus Andrews. She's listed as Esther Bishop in the 1853 Census in Quebec living with family. Though it mistakenly says they were all born in Ireland, it would appear from this that she did not remarry.

John Bishop had at least four brothers that I know of, but I've only looked at John and Napthali. I believe the othes were Elijah, Samuel, and Timothy.

What record does your Cynthia Bishop first show up in?

Who/where did she marry?

Assuming she married, what were the names of her kids and where were they born?

With enough detail, perhaps she can be found.

Thank you so much for the translation of the marriage record. My sister-in-law will be happy to stop trying to read both the old handwriting and trying to translate the French!

After your first email I had also been looking for Pelagie in the census records, but since her parents were already deceased at her marriage - I was not having much luck finding her - so happy to see you found her.

I had seen the death record for Pelagie (but didn't make a copy of it.... thinking I didn't have right Pierre). When will I lean to document everything that MIGHT be relevant!

So my thinking is that for whatever reason... the marriage didn't work out.... and Pierre established himself and had a new family in Wotton. When he received word of his wife's death, he quickly married Adele and legitimized their union and their children.

Thanks for all your help Claire!

Barbara

Hi Barbara,
Yes, this family is very interesting...
Here is the marriage record - St-Hippolyte, Wotton

The fifteen of August eighteen hundred and eighty, after one ban of marriage has been published at the prone of the parish, between Pierre Messier, farmer, widower of Pélagie Beauchemin of this parish, on one part, and Adèle Brien, daughter of age of deceased Lois Brien and of deceased Angélique Vaillancourt from St-Hyacinthe, on the other part, no impeachment having been discovered, we the undersigned priest have received their mutual consent of marriage in presence of Louis Godbout and Alexandre Raymond who did signed with us. The two contracting parties in presence of the witnesses, have declared to recognize as their own children:
Odile, 23 years sponsors:Léon Bergeron, Louise Leduc
Pierre, 21 years sponsors: Charles Lafrance, Marguerite Chardonneret
Ursule, 19 years sponsors: Louis Dion, Lucie Leduc
Philippe, 18 years sponsors: Louis Geoffrion, Célanire Bergeron
Espérance, 16 years sponsors: Joseph Geoffrion, Julie St-François
Constance, 13 years sponsors: Olivier Chainé, Marguerite Ratté.
The witnesses have signed. The two contracting parties have not signed.
H.C. Hamelin, Priest

I did some research and found a new information.
We can see on Census 1861-1871-1881 Verchères-Varennes, Pélagie Beauchemin was living with her brother Charles Beauchemin and his family.
On the Census 1881, there is a note for Pélagie Beauchemin: separeted from her husband.
On the other hand, on the marriage record it is mentionned that Pierre was a widower....
I must say that I also thought it was impossible at that time, for Pierre to be married to Adèle, with Pélagie alive!!!
Very mysterious!!!
I'll keep looking for more info.

Claire

I rejected the 1880 marriage (perhaps pre-maturely) as it shows Pierre as having been married to Pelagie BEAUCHEMIN. And I thought I'd found a death record for her in 1880 (can't find it at the moment). So I didn't think he could be living with Adele in those census records while his first wife was still living.

Can you possibly provide me a translation of the record (I know very little French)? Is it a formalized record of a marriage that took place years earlier??? I just can't imagine them living as a family showing up in the census records all that time without a marriage record.

Or did they leave catholic church prior to being married and then came back to it in 1880 so needed to be "married in the church"? I see the daughter Esperance was married in Oct 1880 - maybe parents needed documentation of their marriage in order for daughter's marriage to proceed???

Any other info would be appreciated! This family is driving me crazy!

Barbara Harris

Like you said the name of Adèle Brien is on the census of 1871-1881-1891.
You also mentionned that the record for the marriage of Pierre Messier & Adèle Brien (1880-Wolfe) is not the one.
I was wondering if you saw that Church record, because at the end the priest wrote down the name of Odile, Pierre, Ursule, Philippe, Espérance and Constance, the name of sponsors for each child and a note to invite the couple to accept those children who were living with them before the marriage.
My understanding is that the children were baptized that same day (I did'nt find any birth records).
So It would explain why we see the names of the children on the census before the marriage.

What do you think?
I have more info for this family.

Pierre MESSIER and Adele BRIAND

Looking for any information (particularly their parents) on this farming family living in or near Wotton (per census) in 1861, 1871, 1881 and wife Adele living as widow with son Pierre in 1891. I have a death record for Pierre 15 Oct 1889 and estimate his birth abt 1808 from census records. Adele's last name could be show as BRIAND or BRIEN, with birth abt 1829 per census records. Marriage record for this couple is NOT the one listed in 1880 in Wolfe County records, as many others have shown it - as the census clearly indicates wife Adele was with Pierre and children born prior to this. Their Children:
1. Rose Delima (b abt 1850) Rose Delima married Joseph PREVOST 7 Jan 1872 in Lewiston Maine and immigrated to Fall River, Mass.
2. Odile (b 18 Feb 1857) - our ancestor. Odile MESSIER married Joseph August L'ABBE in Fall River, Massachusetts 4 Jun 1877 and I have all information of that couple forward.
3. Pierre (b abt 1859) I believe Son Pierre married Leda DUQUET 13 Feb 1888 in Ham Nord, and also immigrated to US living in Hillsborough and Manchester New Hampshire.
4. Ursule (b abt 1861)
5. Joseph Philippe (b 26 Nov 1862)
6. Esperance (b abt 1865)
7. Constance (b abt 1868)
8. George Joseph (b 13 Aug 1868)
9. Rose Anna (b abt 1872)

I believe I may be a [very distant] cousin of yours.
I believe the Pierre Bourbeau you mention is the one who married Anne Besnard?

Although difficult to substantiate, I believe he was the son of Simon Jean Bourbeau & Francoise [le]Tar[d/tre], my 8th gr-grandparents. I've been hoping to come across some other possible descendants...and I'm particularly hopeful that some will have the ability to compare some DNA.

Take care,

-Bill Bourbeau

Re: Adolphe Chandonnet - Henriette Pregent

I have been able to find no documents to support a Eutichianne Chandonnet being born in 1852 or a marriage to a Joseph St Cyr. Could you forward me the documents you have to support this? Below are links to the documents I have.

1. I have an 1854 baptism record for Marie Eutichianne being born to Adolphe and Henriette. The baptism record was acutally found under the search name of a Marie Autsdden but upon further investigation you can see that its actually Marie Eutichianne Chandonnet as listed in the index in the last pages. I also found a website that lists Wotton baptisms from that time period and it has the Godfather and Godmother listed as Joseph Leduc and Theotiste Nault.
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=view&r=an&dbid=...
http://www.originis.ca/bapteme_wotton_1854.html#B232

2. I have a marriage record for Eutichianne and Henri Charland for 1871 that lists Eutichianne as the (grand?)daughter of the late Alexis Chandonnet and Theotiste Nault (I believe her parents are not listed because they died, I cannot find a death record but the 1871 Canadian census had her living with her Grandmother).
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=view&r=an&dbid=...
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

When Henri and Etuchianne took thier 12 kids to the US around 1895 they did live in North Adams, Mass. I have them all listed there in the 1900 census living at 15 Reed St and then sometime around 1907 they moved to Washington St in New Britain, CT.

Please let me know what kind of documentation you have so I can look to see if my information is incorrect.

Thanks!

Adolphe Chandonnet (Parents: Alexis Chandonnet and Theotiste Nault) and Henriette Pregrent had 7 children:
Marie Eutichianne 1854-1925
Joseph Alexis Clovis 1855
Marie Claire Celeste 1857
Joseph Adolphe Felix 1859
Marie Victoria Eglephire 1861
Marie Henriette 1862
Joseph Felix Sinai Israel Mar 1865-Jun 1865

Eutichianne is the great-grandmother of my stepmother so I have the most research on her. She married Pierre Henri Charland in 1871 and they had 12 children, in the 1890's they moved to the US and eventually settled in New Britain, CT.

How are you related to Adolphe and Henriette?

I have traced my family back to Pierre Bourbeau.. I have noted some of the names in the later generations.. would love to have contact with any cousins.. My direct line is Honore Bourbeau dit Carignan who married Marguerite Houle. They came down into Vermont about 1870 when my great grandfather was three years of age. They evidently Amaracanized their name from Carignan to Currier as that has been the family name since their days in Vermont.. with an occasional use of Carrignan.. I have followed birth records from St. Georges De Windsor for them..

Marguerite Dion and François Beaulé were married in St Vital church, Lambton, Quebec, on April 10, 1850. François was the son of Jean-Baptiste Beaulé and Angèle Bélanger and Marguerite was the daughter of Jean Dion and Marguerite Dodier. Note the spelling of the family names. This spelling might make them easier to find. Lambton is not far from Stratford Centre.

Is there a cemetery book for Wotton, Wolfe, QC that covers circa 1871 - 1890's? I'm looking for death records for Joseph LEDUC b. 1802 and his wife, Marie Anne Louise MONGRAIN, b. 1804.

I'm not finding them at Ancestry. And it may because I'm not entering the parishes correctly. Or perhaps the digital indexing is not accurate.

I appreciate the help.

Carol

Hello Stef,

I need help. I'm looking for the death records of Joseph LEDUC and his 2nd wife, Marie Anne Louise MONGRAIN. I have the 1851 for this couple in St-Timothee, Beauharnois, QC and the 1861 & 1871, in Wotton, Wolfe, QC. I also have the parish birth and marriage records. I'm not finding them in the 1881. Here's some vitals on them.

Joseph LEDUC b. November 11, 1802, Ile-Perrot, QC. (wid'r Marie Emerente PROVOST).
Married 2nd Marie Anne Louise MONGRAIN (wid Antoine PREJEAN)
M-Anne Louise MONGRAIN b. September 22, 1804, Les Cèdres (St-Joseph-de-Soulanges), QC

I have a print out of the Catholic parishes in Stratford, Richmond & Wolfe Counties. But when I search on some of these parishes at Ancesty, I don't get results. I realize part of the reason could be incorrect digital indexing. Or maybe I'm not enterring the parishes correctly.

I expect to search various parishes in Wolfe, starting with St-Hippoltyte, searching image by image, which are indexed by year. But not knowing when they passed makes searching difficult.

Do you have these deaths in your cemetery books for this area? I appreciate the lookup very, very much.

Best regards,

Carol

Brian,

Your Boudreaus are François Boudreau and Françoise Morissette of Stratford. All their records (marriage and children's births) should be found in St-Gabriel parish in Stratford, QC. That's where I last saw them all. Their children pretty much all moved to West Warwick, RI where you can find more on them in the parishes of St-Jean-Baptiste (Arctic) and St-Joseph (Natick).

Best regards,

Dennis Boudreau

Re: wood

I presume, based on your other posts, that you are looking for information about the parents of Margaret Wood who married William Andrew Beecher. Margaret is 37 years old on the 1880 St Johnsbury, VT census, giving her a birth year of about 1843. William and Margaret Beecher are living in Brighton, Essex County, VT on the 1870 census (attached.)Note that this family was erroneously indexed as "Bacher." Notice that Lewis and Mary Wood are on the same page, on line 16 and 17. Lewis Wood is 73 - born about 1797. Also notice the continuation of the Beecher family on the next page -four more older children, who are half-siblings of Ada, Willie and Maria. (I'll send you a separate message on that family.)
Working backward chronologically: on the 1860 census for Brighton, Essex County, VT, we find Lewis Wood, b 1797, his wife Mary, and their daughter Margarett Wood, age 17 (born 1843).All born in Canada.

On the 1850 census for Berlin, Washington County, VT, we find Lewis and Mary Wood and daughter Margrett, age 8 (born 1842-43) All born in Canada. Margrett has four older siblings: William Wood, age 20 (1830), Theodore Wood, 19 (1831-32), Mary A. Wood, 16 (b. abt. 1834) and Isaac Wood, age 12 (b. 1838). All born in Canada.

By 1860, Isaac is married to Margrett Madigan and living in Brighton, Essex, VT. Isaac Wood fought briefly in the Civil War (union army) 5th Vermont Infantry. By 1870, Isaac Wood, b 1837-38, is living in Bloomfield, Essex, VT with wife Margrett and 3 daughters: Eliza, Mary J and Maybell. In 1880, the same family, with the addition of daughter Catherine, is still living in Bloomfield.
By 1900, Isaac is widowed, still living in Bloomfield. Birth listed as Oct 1837, Canada. Father b. Canada (Fr.), mother born Canada (Engl), immigrated 1846. Naturalized citizen.
The listing of the death of Isaac Wood on FamilySearch Vermotn Deaths and Burials is as follows:
Isaac Woods, Male, age 69 (birth 1838). Birthplace is blank. Date of death: 7 May 1907, Bloomfield, VT.
Father's Name Louis Woods
Mother's name Mary Breathwhite

The above does not prove conclusively that your Margaret Wood is the sister of Isaac, and therefore the daughter of Louis Wood and Mary Breathwhite, but all the dates match from one census to another, except that the ages of Louis and Mary fluctuate. I have not been able to find birth records for any of the children of Lewis and Mary Wood.

If Isaac's father (and presumably Margaret's father) was french-Canadian, then there is a possibility that the name was not originally Wood at all, but Dubois, or Boisvert, or Charlebois, or some other name with "bois" (i.e. "wood") in it. If I find anything else more conclusive, I'll let you know.

MR

P.S. There is a Theodore Wood of about the right age from Washington County, VT who served in Company D, 2nd Vermont Infantry during the Civil War. He was killed on 5 May 1864 at Wilderness, VA. I'm not positive that this Theodore is the brother of your Margaret. If I find anything else, I'll let you know.
