Does anyone know of a book or site that would cover this part of Wotton Quebec Canada or a site for the town of Wotton.
My ggggrandfather was Louis Duplin one of the first settlers in the area...he married Marguerite Rancourt and lived in Wotton till his death. He was said to have been a "cultivateur" farmer but started as an assistance to a fur trader/courier Louis LaBisonnier who worked for the Hudson Bay Co.
Any and all leads would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time

Hi, all my family descendants are from Wotton, Qc, CAN.
I have a chalet at 15mins from Wotton. So I know a little about it, if it can help you.

Wotton is a small village in the Wolfe County. It's near Asbestos formerly called Shipton (from Shipton Township) during the end of 1800s.

This village was one of many village founded when the canadian government wanted to relocate in quebec, all US people that was loyal to the britannic crown (the loyalist). The goal was to assimilate french speaking people. Today we are over 86% french in Québec!!! The governement gave lands freely to people that was able to open roads, cross rivers and establish families in new place. It was around 1845. They divided all the south-east of the Québec in township. It's why it is called Eastern Township. They gave the name of each township from somes who were used in England. Wolfe Co. is one of it and "Wotton" name is from a village in England. Theses names have no characteristics with something in Québec province...

Patrick Bready was the first to establish permanently at Wotton in 1849. People asked to the Trois-Rivières's bishop to form the St-Hippolyte parish in 1852.

Wotton is located on secondary road 255 nearby the "loyalist road" formed by the Craig ( and Gosford ) road. This road cross all the Eastern Township territory from Lévis ( near Québec City ) to Sherbrooke. Today, it's the secondary road 216 and you have a beautifull panoramic view when you're on it.

Search for loyalist, Eastern Township, Orange Lodge, Asbestos, Danville, Richmond, Sherbrooke, Wolfe, Shipton (Québec CAN).

Search a lot in french language because it's what we use to talk here.

I did a little search in french ( wotton qc ) and found a lot for Wotton.

I found

Alzire DUPLIN + Joseph-Théophile GEOFFRION
MARRIAGE: 13 JUL 1886, Wotton, Wolfe, QC

Look also for register in
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~asbestos/bwotD.htm

I will go soon in Wotton cemetary during this summer to find something about one of my ancestor. If you need something, just ask me.

I found something you probably missed because it's in french. You can reach one of your cousin Michel Duplin at graphmic@videotron.ca .

I offer you a translation of the text I found in http://www.autochtones.com/fr/cherche/index_p7.html

It goes like this :
------------------------------------------------------------
I'm looking for information to identifie the tribe and origin place of my ancestor Louis [Duplin...] who has been baptized in St-Pierre les Becquets in February 19th 1816. According to the baptism register, he was 12y 4m old and was then with a woman called Marie-Louise of 28yo, and two young girls. One of the young girl named Marie-Louise two was born on Nov 8th 1809, and the other young girl was born about Aug. 1st 1811. The preacher indicated that the young girls was coming from the Uplands. It's Louis Trottier dit Labissonnière, a "coureur des bois" for the Baie d'Hudson Cie who brought back all theses peoples with him from the Uplands. During this same day Feb. 19th 1816, he married the older Marie-Louise and recognized the young girls like its natural children. Louis [Duplin...] didn't had a family surname when he was baptized, but he use to be called Louis D'upland ( In french " D' " means "from" so it means Louis From upland ) When he married Marguerite Rancourt in Feb 22th 1830, the preacher wrote Louis Duplin.
------------------------------------------------------------
I think you will have some difficulties to find ancestors older than Louis because he was amerindian. In most of case, we have difficulties to find information about amerindians because there was no or a few registers only holded by these peoples. I know that near St-Pierre les Becquets, there is an Abénakis tribe at Bécancour and also at Odanak.

Another hint, a lots of Louis and Marguerite daughters married some Grégoire and Godbout in Wotton, St-Camille-de-Wotton and St-Joseph de Ham-Sud. All of it are always located in Wolfe County, Québec, CA.

Valère Duplin + Exilda Grégoire married 25-11-1856 Wotton

Emilie Duplin + Onésime Grégoire married 27-04-1857 Wotton

Azilda Duplin + Edmond Dubé-Delorme married 16-09-1872 St-Camille
++ Rene Delorme + Marie Louise Godbout married 01-06-1914 Ham-Sud
++++Léo Delorme born Mar 1916,died Jan 28 2002

Adélard Duplin dit Labissonnière + Régina Lepitre married ? ?
++Jeannette Duplin + Casimir Godbout married 8 Jan 1918 East Angus, Compton County, Quebec.
++++Therese Marie "Madeleine"Godbout
++++SimoneGodbout
++++Fernando Godbout
++++Germain Godbout
++++Jacqueline Godbout

Oh, another hint !! Install french keyboard on your computer to be able to have the accents " é à ç î è ô ... " If you don't type names and surnames with their accents, your research will be erroneous and you will post name with errors. So I corrected the names of your ancestors and gave you the ""phonetic"" pronounciation where it is difficult.

Pierre ( pee-air )
Louis Fils ( Fils means son ) ( loo-ee )
Marie Éléonore ( ma-ree ay-lay-onor )
Valère ( Va-lair )
Émilie ( Ay-mee-lee )
Joseph Télesphore Cléophas ( oh my god... Jo-zeff Tayless-fore Clay-o-faws )
Émilie Orie ( Ay-mee-lee Oree )
Zoé ( Zo-ay )
Azilda ( same thing... )
Octavie ( Ok-ta-vee )
Joseph Victor ( Jo-zeff Viktor )
Aure ( ar )

It's all about what I found in one evening. I hope it may help you. If you have something to translate or if you need anything else, just send it to me by email. I have a good geographic knowledge about Québec and all your ancestors lived where my current family descendants lives...

Good luck Barbara
Stéphan

Hello Stephan
Thank you for all the information you sent me! I have been in touch with Michel and we have both researched together.
in something I found it stated that my Louis Duplin was a "young savage" from one of the 13 Indian families living at Becancour in 1831. Is there anyway you can find me information on the Abenakis tribe in Becancour?
There is also a book made by the town of Wotton for an anniversary year....it mentions Louis Duplin as one of the earliest settlers...do you know if I might be able to find a copy?
Louis was buried from St Hypolithe....is there a graveyard there? Would there possibly be still a grave for him?
For so many years Louis has been just a name to me....I would love to know more about him as a person.
My Grandmother and Great Grandmother were amazing women and lived very long and interesting lives...I am sure that the man we came from Louis Duplin was also very interesting.
If you go to Wotton could you please check at St Hypolithe and see if there is a grave? I know it is a lot to ask but as I get older and my grandchildren grow I would like to leave them with as much of their history as possible.
When I have moved into my new home and set up my computer I will download the French keyboard so my communication will be easier to read.
Thank you for all that you have sent me. You are so kind to take the time to help me know my ancestors.

It's a pleasure to help you!

I will go near Wotton within the next three weeks during my holiday. I'll try to find if there is a grave of your ancestor beside the church. If so, I'll try to get a picture of it. ( I have to look for mine too )

For the book you're talking about, they published something for the 150th Anniversary of Wotton in 1999 :

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Woods/4552/livre03.gif
I don't know if it still published. Note that this book is in french and there is no english version. I will probably buy it.

Dear Stéphan,

Thank you for the messages you have posted. They contain information that is very useful to me.

When you go to Wotton, I would appreciate it very much if you could do two lookups for me:

My Great Great Uncle Hilaire-Casimir Hamelin was the second curé of Wotton, serving from 1857 until his death. According to the information I have, he was born on either the 14th or the 24th of January, 1831 and died in Wotton on January 22, 1903. I was told that he is buried there. I would appreciate it if you could verify that he is buried in Wotton and, if there is an inscription, if you could verify his date of birth and date of death.

I have also heard that his mother, my Great Great Grandmother, Thérèse Beaupré, died in Wotton on April 4, 1864. Apparently her son was caring for her in her old age. I have her date of birth as November 9, 1792. Again, I would appreciate it if you could verify that she is buried in Wotton and, if there is an inscription, if you could verify her date of birth and date of death.

Thank you very much.
