Pierre MESSIER and Adele BRIAND
Looking for any information (particularly their parents) on this farming family living in or near Wotton (per census) in 1861, 1871, 1881 and wife Adele living as widow with son Pierre in 1891. I have a death record for Pierre 15 Oct 1889 and estimate his birth abt 1808 from census records. Adele's last name could be show as BRIAND or BRIEN, with birth abt 1829 per census records. Marriage record for this couple is NOT the one listed in 1880 in Wolfe County records, as many others have shown it - as the census clearly indicates wife Adele was with Pierre and children born prior to this. Their Children: 1. Rose Delima (b abt 1850) Rose Delima married Joseph PREVOST 7 Jan 1872 in Lewiston Maine and immigrated to Fall River, Mass. 2. Odile (b 18 Feb 1857) - our ancestor. Odile MESSIER married Joseph August L'ABBE in Fall River, Massachusetts 4 Jun 1877 and I have all information of that couple forward. 3. Pierre (b abt 1859) I believe Son Pierre married Leda DUQUET 13 Feb 1888 in Ham Nord, and also immigrated to US living in Hillsborough and Manchester New Hampshire. 4. Ursule (b abt 1861) 5. Joseph Philippe (b 26 Nov 1862) 6. Esperance (b abt 1865) 7. Constance (b abt 1868) 8. George Joseph (b 13 Aug 1868) 9. Rose Anna (b abt 1872)

Objet : Pierre MESSIER and Adele BRIAND
Like you said the name of Adèle Brien is on the census of 1871-1881-1891. You also mentionned that the record for the marriage of Pierre Messier & Adèle Brien (1880-Wolfe) is not the one. I was wondering if you saw that Church record, because at the end the priest wrote down the name of Odile, Pierre, Ursule, Philippe, Espérance and Constance, the name of sponsors for each child and a note to invite the couple to accept those children who were living with them before the marriage. My understanding is that the children were baptized that same day (I did'nt find any birth records). So It would explain why we see the names of the children on the census before the marriage.
What do you think? I have more info for this family.

Re: Objet : Pierre MESSIER and Adele BRIAND
I rejected the 1880 marriage (perhaps pre-maturely) as it shows Pierre as having been married to Pelagie BEAUCHEMIN. And I thought I'd found a death record for her in 1880 (can't find it at the moment). So I didn't think he could be living with Adele in those census records while his first wife was still living.
Can you possibly provide me a translation of the record (I know very little French)? Is it a formalized record of a marriage that took place years earlier??? I just can't imagine them living as a family showing up in the census records all that time without a marriage record.
Or did they leave catholic church prior to being married and then came back to it in 1880 so needed to be "married in the church"? I see the daughter Esperance was married in Oct 1880 - maybe parents needed documentation of their marriage in order for daughter's marriage to proceed???
Any other info would be appreciated! This family is driving me crazy!

Hi Barbara, Yes, this family is very interesting... Here is the marriage record - St-Hippolyte, Wotton
The fifteen of August eighteen hundred and eighty, after one ban of marriage has been published at the prone of the parish, between Pierre Messier, farmer, widower of Pélagie Beauchemin of this parish, on one part, and Adèle Brien, daughter of age of deceased Lois Brien and of deceased Angélique Vaillancourt from St-Hyacinthe, on the other part, no impeachment having been discovered, we the undersigned priest have received their mutual consent of marriage in presence of Louis Godbout and Alexandre Raymond who did signed with us. The two contracting parties in presence of the witnesses, have declared to recognize as their own children: Odile, 23 years sponsors:Léon Bergeron, Louise Leduc Pierre, 21 years sponsors: Charles Lafrance, Marguerite Chardonneret Ursule, 19 years sponsors: Louis Dion, Lucie Leduc Philippe, 18 years sponsors: Louis Geoffrion, Célanire Bergeron Espérance, 16 years sponsors: Joseph Geoffrion, Julie St-François Constance, 13 years sponsors: Olivier Chainé, Marguerite Ratté. The witnesses have signed. The two contracting parties have not signed. H.C. Hamelin, Priest
I did some research and found a new information. We can see on Census 1861-1871-1881 Verchères-Varennes, Pélagie Beauchemin was living with her brother Charles Beauchemin and his family. On the Census 1881, there is a note for Pélagie Beauchemin: separeted from her husband. On the other hand, on the marriage record it is mentionned that Pierre was a widower.... I must say that I also thought it was impossible at that time, for Pierre to be married to Adèle, with Pélagie alive!!! Very mysterious!!! I'll keep looking for more info.

Objet : Pierre MESSIER and Adele BRIAND
Well Barbara, it could be your lucky day!
I just found the death record for Pélagie Beauchemin. She died on May 8th 1880, Verchères, at 71 years, wife of Pierre Messier. The witnesses were: Charles Beauchemin and Pierre Beauregard. So it could be possible that Pierre Messier did married Adèle Brien.
Good Luck! Claire

Re: Objet : Pierre MESSIER and Adele BRIAND
Thank you so much for the translation of the marriage record. My sister-in-law will be happy to stop trying to read both the old handwriting and trying to translate the French!
After your first email I had also been looking for Pelagie in the census records, but since her parents were already deceased at her marriage - I was not having much luck finding her - so happy to see you found her.
I had seen the death record for Pelagie (but didn't make a copy of it.... thinking I didn't have right Pierre). When will I lean to document everything that MIGHT be relevant!
So my thinking is that for whatever reason... the marriage didn't work out.... and Pierre established himself and had a new family in Wotton. When he received word of his wife's death, he quickly married Adele and legitimized their union and their children.
Thanks for all your help Claire!
