Marchessault, Victoria; Quebec, West Shefford?
Looking for information on my step-grandmother, Victoria Marchessault Guilmette Guernsey. All I know for sure was that she married my grandfather in early 1954 and moved to Ohio. After he died she eventually moved back to Quebec. She had a brother named Luc and a sister named Hermine. She may have been married to someone with last name of Guilmette who perhaps died before 1950. She had a niece (?) named Lucie perhaps.
Looking at Ancestry.com 1901 census, it appears she may have been born in 1894 to Victor Marchessault and Eugenie Pelletier in West Shefford, with potentially sisters Anne, Alice and Hermine and brothers Auguste and Luc.
Thanks in advance for any information

Re: Marchessault, Victoria; Quebec, West Shefford?
Thank you for replying.
This is exactly the Victoria I am trying to learn more about. I would definitely be interested in learning about her siblings and any children they may have had so I might try to contact someone in that line to learn more about her. In addition, I would like to learn more about how her family came to the Shefford area and when. I did see a Marchessault name as the enumerator on the 1901 census page for her family, so I am wondering if that person was actually her father or a relative
Thank you again.
Irma
PS - I haven't done much research with French lines. What does the "dit Laramie" phrase mean in relationship to Victoria? Did one of her ancestors have this name or assume it when they married?

Re: Marchessault, Victoria; Quebec, West Shefford?
Hello, Found your post while searching for information on West Shefford. You can read the full history of it online from the Bromont (formerly West Shefford) web site. In fact, there is a specific place where Victor Marchessault is referenced ... (in French ... Sorry) http://www.bromont.net/Ville_de_Bromont/A_propos_de_Bromont/...You also had a question about the meaning of "dit Laramie". I am not an expert on history, but in legal terms, some people use a "public" name different from there real ones. Example : Old Quebec singer Michel Louvain. His real name is Michel Poulin, but on his driver license ... "Michel Poulin dit Louvain" So it could be that people were calling her Victoria Laramie. Good luck

Re: Marchessault, Victoria; Quebec, West Shefford?
This is taken from Winona Lawrence MAtthews book "The story of West Shefford"
Victor Marchessault (1860-1931) and his son, Luc (1898-1976)
Victor Marchessault and Munroe Hayes were in partnership as general merchants. Their large, two-storey brick store was in the building now numbered 830 Shefford Street. The store was well run and gained a reputation for miles around for both the quality and variety of the goods it carried. People came from a great distance to trade there. Victor Marchessault had five children: Anna, who married Dr. Picard; Victoria, who married a Mr. Guernsey; Augustus, who married Jessie Brown from Cowansville; ermine (Mimi) and Luc, who married Gertrude des Trois Maisons, and had Jacques, Lucie and Victor who studied medicine and is at present a distinguished pediatrician andExecutive Vice-Presedient of the Canadian Paediatric Society, Ottawa, Ontario. When Monroe Hayes moved to Frelighsburg it was Luc whoh helped his father run the store amd who eventually took over the buisness. His store, especially at Chrismastime was a delightful place to visit. There were at that tome of year, on the board counter, glass jars containing candies of all kinds; chocolates, creams, horehounds, and barley sugars made in the forms of animals and birds. There were dolls each packed in its own box and ranged in its beauty, its sweet face delighting small girls. There were tops and other toys, games, sleds, jackknives and jumping jacks, but best of all there was s dog. He was a large, light brown stuffed animal, standing stiffly on a piece of carpet placed in the middle of the store near the entrance. He was mounted on wheels and was, my father sais, only to look at, not to buy. And look we did every Christmas of our childhood for only at Christmas did he appear and then he was put away until the next year. Luc continue to sell dry goods, boots and shoes, grain, wood and gasoline and, in company with Miles Enright later on handled real estate. As well, he was Mayor of West Shefford from 1937 to 1963, following in his father's footsteps as Victor had served two terms as Mayor. Luc lived in West Shefford until near the end of his life when, a victim of Parkinson's isease, he left the village and moved to Montreal to be with his sister Victoria. He was the last West Shefford member of a prominent family which for many years and two generations had held a high place in the buiness and political life of the community.
