Charles Mowatt, b. 1830 +-

I am looking for information on Charles Lawrence Mowatt and his family. He was born around 1834, most likely in Saguenay, Canada. His father may be Hugh or George. By 1860's he was in the US Navy, in 1863 married Alice Charnock/Charnack in Portsmouth, NH. They had 3 children in Jackson, Illinois: Lilla Mowatt b. 1874-1876, (m. George Perry Davis of Carlisle); May/Mae N. Mowatt, b. 1870; Robert/Rubart? who later resided in Pueblo, CO and was the Chief Engineer of the Electric Car Co. After returning from Illinois, Charles & Alice lived in Massachusetts.

Re: 1873 Controversy, Moisie Iron Works -- Norwegian "Carl Johnson"

Jon,

I realize that I'm replying eight years after your last inquiry, but I, also have relatives on the 1873 Concordia, and in one manifest they are listed on the same page as your Carl Johnson.

My 2nd great-grandparents, Julius Bernhard Carlsen Lund & his wife, Johanna, plus their infant daughter Hulda somehow got out of that mess in Moisie. The Molsons were making obscene amounts of money at the time, and yes, they are the same Molsons who own the brewery. They also owned a railroad, a lot of forestry land, and a bank that printed its own currency. I wouldn't put slavery past them.

I have found a copy of a New York Times article that claims in June of 1873, 215 Scandinavians pirated a schooner from Moisie, and sailed up the St. Lawrence Seaway to Point Levi, where they were captured. The story made national news and was paraphrased and re-printed in over a dozen other newspapers I have found.

Julius & Johanna somehow made it to Chicago from there, then to Collingwood and Parry Sound Ontario, finally settling in Cheboygan, Michigan in 1881.

I have been searching for almost a year for any other news about this incident, and have just about given up. Perhaps court records or newspaper archives from Levis or Quebec City might give us a clue as to how this was resolved? The time in question is late-June, 1873.

Contact me and I'll open up my tree for you, there you can see the NYT article.

I am not sure if this is the best board to post to. I have a group photo of some 30 + people taken late 1920 -early 1930. I think it was taken in the River Bend area. My father left Glasgow in 1926 and lived in Mission City, B C and also River Bend Quebec (worked Owens Paper Co). Most of the time he was in River Bend.
The photo may be of a little interest to others and I can send to anyone interested. Someone might be able to pass a judgement on if its Quebec or B C.
David Smith

I am wondering if anyone has info on Thomas Tremblay. I know that he was born in Saguenay Region abt 1846. His parents where William Trambly and Henrietta Blackburn. Thomas moved from the region to Roplh Twp, Renfrew county, Ontario (Point Alexander) where he married Mary Burke in 1888. I have their wedding certificate and noticed the spelling difference in surnames. I would love to know any info such as other siblings, when he died or anything else on his parents. Thanks to all that can help. Much appreciated.
Tina

Hello,
I am looking for information on Pierre Mousseau (later changed to Mousso) who was born in St Jean in August 1857 according to US census records and draft cards of his son which I have found. I am *desperate* to find out more about his early years, including his parents and siblings. He (and possibly the whole family moved to Plattsburg New York in the 1860's. Pierre (later Peter) married Laura Carter (her French name was Marie-Angelique Chartier) who was born in Keesville, New York. Marie-Angelique Chartier was a direct descendent of John Carter (Jean Chartier of the Deerfield Massacre of 1704 who was reportly held captive at a monastary in St Richelieu.)
I am looking for help with a) finding Pierre's family and possibly contacting the church where he may have been baptized
b) looking for information on where to turn to find information about the Deerfield Massacre and captives who were marched to Quebec and held at a Mowhawk Indian camp, adopted by French families, or traded for ransom back to the English in Massachusetts.
Is there anyone out there who would have *ANY* idea where to turn to find this information?

Have you found anything additional on Wilfred? Appears to be born 5 Sep 1880 according to WWI records. Is listed as William in 1920 census with an interesting addition...states he was born in Michigagn, father born Michigan, mother born Illinois.

Possible this is not him, but looks close...wife named Nettie.

Hi Bernard,

It has been a long time since I've spoken with you last, I hope you are doing well. I was speaking with you about the parents of Orville Henry Lean, and your information was very helpful. I was actually reading the passage you quoted, and it was from the priest's log book I believe. The reason I say this is that my father and I just got back from St. Prime yesterday. We went up to try and find Orville's grave, as he is buried in the cemetery behind the St. Prime parish.

I know you mentioned you might be able to look in the archives for some more information on Orville. I'm writing to you for two reasons, as you are the only contact I have been able to find and have help me in this respect. Firstly, I'd like to know if you are still interested in searching the archives for me (I'd be happy to pay you for your time), and secondly, more of a personal favour, I was wondering if you would be able to help me at all with respect to Orville's burial place. It turns out he was buried by the town of St. Prime and no tombstone or marker of any kind was left. The only reason we found the general area of his grave was through a school teacher who actually attended his funeral around 50 years ago. Is there any way you have a contact at the church or a contact in St. Prime who might be able to find a plot number or a more exact location of where is actually buried? I only ask because my father and I would really like to have a plaque, cross, or tombstone made in his remeberance, because as I said, he currently lies in the ground almost completely forgotten and unmarked.

I'm not sure if you'll even get this message, but if you do, I would greatly appreciate a reply from you.

Thanks Bernard,

-Jason

According to a family tree that my uncle has compiled, Loren Brough (b.1814 or 1816, married a Margaret in Canada and had six children) would be my great great great grandfather on my mothers side, who is a Brough.
Décès d'Olympe Simon - Miguneault

Mes amis du Canada,

J'écrit pour la dame Mme. Gloria Dean d'Ontario. Merci. Dennis B.

Wilfred John Gagnon

Is there anyone who is able to help me identify which family my great grandfather WIlfred John Gagnon belongs to? We know very little about his origins. I believe he would have been born in the early 1880s in Chicoutimi. He had a brother named Amedus. He married an American girl (Annetta May Anderson) and resided in Buffalo, New York early in the 1900s. He corresponded with a John(?) Gagnon who seems to have run a bakery in Chicoutimi. Wilfred Gagnon passed away on New Year's day in either 1949 or 1950. I would be grateful for any assistance.
