For anyone searching for Irish in Pontiac co. I have a very
general question.
Are the Irish immigrants to Allumette Island generally from the same area of Ireland and at the same timeframe?
Welcome any and all thoughts on this topic

Cheers, Bill

I am trying to find where in Ireland the Quinn's came from.
They were the first settlers in Vinton when the parish was still St. Anne's on Calumet Island. Don't know the year they arrived but know it was earlier than 1840.
We have family lore that says we originated from the County Armagh or Tyrone. Many Vinton settlers came from Co.s Down,
Armagh and Tipperary as listed on tombstones.

Hi Bill, Have you found if the Irish in Allumette mainly come from the same area of Ireland. We have finally discovered that the Fitzpatricks of Allumette came from Kilkeel in County Down. Any others from that area???

Hi Bill:

I have just found out the Nephin's who originally settled on Allumette Island and then moved to Nickabeau (sp?) originally came from Boyle, County Roscommon around 1850. Have you found out any further info on others? I was curious if any other families were from the Boyle area?

In researching my own Murphy emigrants from Ireland of the early 1820's to Eastern Ontario & West Quebec (Upper Canada & Lower Canada at the time!), I came across a book in the Ottawa Public Library about the "Peter Robinson" Irish settlers. They came in two "waves": in around 1825 and 1827 (if my memory is correct). I recall examining the ship manifests for Murphys and many were from Tipperary...

I'm embarrassed to admit that I did not record the citation of this excellent reference in my research log (since there were no "hits") but the same author wrote an earlier general reference on "Your Irish Ancestors in Canada".

Hi, My Keon ancestors came from Co. Fermanagh sometime prior to 1835. The family settled in Bristol, PQ., then one of the sons, Andrew, married Jane Smith of Eardley & they settled in sheenboro c1844.

The excellent book I was referring to is "Peter Robinson's Settlers, by Carol Bennett, Juniper Books, 1987, ISBN 0-919137-16-4". Carol Bennett has written many other thorough and useful references, also under the name Carol Bennett-McCuaig.

To see the list of the 1823 settlers, see: <http://webhome.idirect.com/~obrienr/cork1823.html>;

You will find one family with the name "Quin" (Timothy Quin from Rathcormick, Co. Cork) listed as arriving on the "Stakesby" of 1823.

There is also a partial list of the 1825 settlers at the following link, but only those that settled in the Peterborough area: <http://www.pcma.ca/roblist.htm>;

There is a "Quin" family listed here also, but no details or mention of Allumette Island (a Peterborough area focus as I mentioned)...

For further information, there is also "The McCabe List: Early Irish in the Ottawa Valley, by Dr. Bruce Elliott, Ontario Genealogical Society, ISBN 1-55075-048-8" which is not exactly an immigration list but does list many Irish who had immigrated.

Further to my previous post:

Al Lewis' "Bytown or Bust" site has a lot of information about the Irish in the Ottawa Valley, lots of cross links to other sites and the best bibliography on the area I've yet seen!
He lists the "Quin" family at the following page:
<http://www3.sympatico.ca/ag.lewis/Alsrob3.htm>;

The following link also contains the 1825 ships of the Peter Robinson settlers (among others):
