Thank you once again. Your help has been invaluable. I notice you use familysearch and not ancestry. Do you find it more helpful, less expensive, more accurate? I will look into this site a little more frequently now.

Again, thanks for rounding it all out.

Sue

Hi again, you're welcome. I use any database I can get my hands on. Ancestry.com charges a fee, Family Search does not, but Ancestry is more comprehensive (more databases). Ancestry includes many jpegs (images of the original handwritten record) in many cases where Family Search does not, and that's important. The transcription (typed version) of a record usually has far less info than the original record. Plus transcribers are naturally going to make errors as they struggle to read sometimes nearly illegible script. Viewing the original, you yourself will have a shot at determining what it truly says. Both Ancestry and FS are seemingly equally accurate. People who don't subscribe to Ancestry can't access Ancestry links. So in a forum like this, it's better to post links to Family Search and other free sites. (I prefer text from a record be posted in the thread as well, as that facilitates scanning back over the research to date). Any reader can then access the free link and see the record (for example other descendants seeking info in future). Both Ancestry and Family Search offer Learning Pages to introduce newcomers not only to the site but also to genealogy research generally. Have fun and happy hunting!

Still getting nowhere with the Chauvin family tree. Found Leon Chauvin in the Canadian Genealogy Index for Quebec, volume/page 1288 for Ottawa county and volume/page 933 for Buckingham county. How do I look at these pages?

Okay, I've been using your suggestions, but I'm stuck again. This time it's on my great-grandmother and great grandfather on my father's side. My father was Romeo Felix LaPlante, his father was Eugene Joseph LaPlante, and Eugene's father and mother supposedly were Augustin LaPlante and Sara Bergeron. At that point, I am stuck. I cannot seem to get any further back. I've searched every record I could find and to no avail. How should I proceed?

Is this still a Chauvin thread or should I be sending my questions somewhere else? How do I get information from the Canadian Genealogy Index?

Hi Sue, did you get my message about the need to start a new thread for your question? I notice you haven't done that. Do you have questions re how to do that?

Again, thanks for responding. I guess didn't notice your response to my question. Anyway, I saw it tonight. Yes - I do not know how to start a new thread. I remember you mentioned that before, but I was uncertain as to how to begin. I've had quite a bit of success since I last heard from you except on my great grandmother, Sara Bergeron. I think I've found her baptismal information but again I can't read the French. Also, I found a Paul LaPlante who married a Helen Bergeron. Paul appears to have been the brother of my great-grandfather Augustin LaPlante who married Sara Bergeron. I have not been able to find their wedding date or Sara's parents but I'm thinking two brothers married two sisters (as my sister and I also married 2 brothers). On the information regarding Helene and Paul's wedding on 9/17/1872, her father is Athanase Bergeron and mother is Flavie Belanger. However, I can find no information that they had a daughter names Sara. Can you help?

You have been most helpful in the past and I really appreciate it.

Sue

Hi Sue, I'm back in an edit to say we can delete our posts in this thread now that you've started a new thread. Hope the new thread works out - you do have a reply there that you don't seem to have read...

Once again, thanks for your invaluable help. I am continuing to learn about the structure of Ancestry and how to find information,. I actually found the death certificate of another relative last evening WRITTEN IN ENGLISH, and it gave me the name of his mother and father. That was another spot where I was stuck until last evening. I wish I had more time for this research because it is fascinating. There is definitely a trick to doing the research.

Thanks for your help. In the next day or two I should have time to do what you suggest.
