I am looking for the Grimes who lived in Aylmer in the late 1800's. Thank you! I am specifically looking for Richard T, Thomas, and his father James Grimes. Richard moved to the US in 1880. He was born in Aylmer in 1854.

Thanks!

I believe the Grimes family of Aylmer were neighbours of my ggg-grandparents when they lived in South Hull (which is just east of Aylmer along the north shore of the Ottawa River) around 1868 through 1880.

Many of the Grimes family burials were at the same cemetery as my family. Recently, a member of the Upper Ottawa Genealogical Society added the Bellevue Cemetery to his "GraveMarkers Website".

There is a picture of the headstone of James Grimes at the following link: <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~snaylor/BellevueAyl...; (make sure you get the whole URL!). James Grimes married Jannett McConnell. By a coincidence, I am also a McConnell descendent...

I couldn't recall if I had replyed! So sorry if this is a repeat. My Richard went to US where he married in MN, then went on to MT.
I think his folks are James and Jennet (McConnell) Grimes.

There is some genealogy/history of the Grimes families of Aylmer -- I think there were three... This information comes from "Genealogy of the Valley", a section of "Pioneers of the Upper Ottawa" by Anson A. Gard (1906).

From pp. 310-311:

"Grimes, Wm., came from New Hampshire in 1801. He married Rachael, daughter of Samuel Benedict, sr. He settled on the Aylmer Road, not far east of Aylmer. Children: Samuel, who was a Methodist preacher, m. Sarah Shadford; James, m. Jane McConnell; Wm., who died at 81, unm.; Mary, m. Gilbert Wilcox; Elizabeth, m. Robert Kenny of frequent mention; Rachael and Miriam, unm; and Triphina, m. Charles Purcell, whose son-in-law, Wm. A. Merrifield, has become a prominent figure in American politics, through his long friendship with President Roosevelt, begun when they "ranched it" together on the western plains.
To the daughter Miriam, an invalid, I am indebted for much of interest pertaining to the early days. Her memory is most remarkable, and her cheerfulness unbounding, even though she has not been able to leave her room for years

Grimes, Anthony, came from near old Quebec. He married Catherine J. Crilley. They have one daughter -- Anna -- and an adopted daughter, both unm. 'Old Grimes is dead that good old man,' but if we 'Ne'er shall see him more,' we certainly have to admit that he left a good many reminders on going. This family is the thrid of the name in a small locality and no two of them related.

Grimes, Michael, (who died at nearly 100) came from Ireland in 1835. He cleared and settled land back in the mountains, which later was abandoned and is now gone back to forest. He later went to Booth's Hill. He married Catherine Ryan. Children: John, m. Ellen Mulvihill; Michael, m. Anna O'Meara; Mary, m. Philip Mulvihill (brother); Richard, m. Mary Padden; Anna, m. John Dunn, of Chelsea.
John's son John is now the proprietor of the Windsor Hotel in Ottawa. Another son of John wen to the Klondike."

Hi Cindy,
Thank you very much for the interesting data re GRIMES of
Aylmer. I am particularly interested in a- Richard GRIMES
who married Adria Jane (sometimes shown as Anne Jane)
HILLMAN - 18 Sept. 1874, in Lochaber, Quebec. I have not
been able to find any data on them or any children. It may be
that they moved from the Lochaber area.
Regards,
Dorothy E. Morris

Hello Michael Ross Murphy and thank you very much for
posting the interesting data on the GRIMES surname, family.
My interest is in one - Richard GRIMES who married -
Adriah Jane (sometimes shown as Anne Jane) HILLMAN,
marr. in Ottawa, resided possibly in Lochaber, Thurso, where
my HILLMAN (my maternal line) settled c. 1800. I have
been unable to find their marriage record and any children
of this issue.
Thanks again.
