The earliest Grimes i have is Jame Grimes who married Kezia Chadwick. He died in 1804 at Newton, Mass. His Grandson William, who married Rachel Benedict, moved to Aylmer Canada from Hampshire County, Mass around 1801. This is a rather amazing line, as I believe it is related to at least four US Presidents, and Ann Bradstreet, as well as many other notables.

I've always wondered where the Grimes came from, originally.

Is this your line as well?

It is my line indeed....James Grimes was a surveyor and town constable who married Keziah Chadwick Nov 23, 1739 and moved to Watertown MA and had children. Do you have the names of the children?

Ck out the "History of Early Settlements of Newton, Co of Middlesex, MN.....it is a readable book online. Just type in Grimes and all the pages with a Grimes name is prompted and u just go to each link. I have many other sources of readable books of early MA history and Grimes genealogy if u are interested. James gdfather was a John Grimes b July 28th 1700 and married a Hannah. He had a 41 Ac farmstead. It was his son John who was James father.
This is the best I could put together the earlest Grimes. The Anson Gard book mentions he came from New Hampshire but not so he was from Goshen MA and left Woburn MA in 1801 winter time to settle in Hull/Aylmer region. Have u seen the family 80 site they farmed from the Google map aerial pic? If u reply to my Dgrimes@aol.com email address I can discuss what I have that u might be interested in.....and I sure wud like to know of your connection since I have a good tree of the current family line....hope to hear from u soon...Dick

Surnames: Green, Grimes
Hi,

I am researching the Green's of East Templeton, Quebec in the 1800's. My g-g-g-grandfather was Samuel Grimes Green. I am wondering if his mother could have been Elizabeth Grimes who lived with William Green and his family in the Canadian Census of 1852. I have been trying to find the origin of my g-g-g-grandfather for months now and haven't been able to find anything concrete. He was born abt. 1799 in the U.S. and is of Scottish origin. Could the Grimes and Green families have married together? Could Samuel and William be brothers? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Also, I can't find anything on Samuel Grimes Green's wife. Family history says she may have been a Kirk. Would you know anything about that also?
Thanks so much for any help you can give.
Donna Green

I have an Emma Grimes born 1 Feb. 1857 in Aylmer, Quebec to David Grimes and Janet McConnell. She married George B. Hughes and moved west to Chilliwack, B.C. George died 1918. Emma remarried to a William Beattie in Victoria in 1923. Searching for marriage date for Emma and her first husband George and Emma's death date.

Actually her father was James Grimes b1814 d1888, who was the second son of William Grimes and Rachel Benedict, original pioneers to the Ottawa area.....I may have more info on Emma but my family tree outline merely shows the marriage to George.....I will look for you if you still need the information.....

Thanks for the correction. I think they would have been married after 1881 as she is still in the census living at home in Aylmer. George was born May 2, 1856, probably in Marysburgh Township, Prince Edward County, Ontario but moved to Vennachar, Lennox and Addington County, Ont. with his parents and siblings circa 1862. His younger sister Cynthia married James Edward McConnell in 1877 in Ontario. I wonder how they met since they were living in different parts of the country? Maybe through the McConnells? Or was she a school teacher with a new posting in Ontario?

Back to George and Emma's marriage- probably in Aylmer? Methodist Church?

Any more details in your notes would be appreciated. Thanks again.
