Montreal Records from the 1920's

I need some guidance about Montreal records. I need to locate the death of a newborn baby born in a Montreal hospital on March 19, 1929. He was a hemophiliac that bled to death. Are there indexes of deaths records, or would a newspaper have a death notice in the paper? I also need a marriage record from around 1948 in Montreal. If anyone can tell me how I go about looking for these records, I would appreciate it.

I'm the one searching for Cyrille Murray.

The marriage record from Portage, MI is online through the LDS Family Search site. His name is written as Serrel Maura. I'm not sure if it was written phonetically or not. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-16738-4677-24?cc=...

Cyrille died in Chicago, in 1927. I'm currently waiting for his death certificate. I've attached the birth record I have for my direct ancestor, but I do have the same pages for a few of their other children.

I do have Mary LaPlant Murray's death certificate. On one of their other children's death certificate which is on FamilySearch's index, it says he was from Montreal. I don't know if that was true or not.

My grandfather didn't know anything about his paternal side as his father died when he was 3. All he was told by his mother was: he was supposed to be Irish and the name was Murragh, Murrah or something to that effect.

Thank you so much for replying! I've posted on the forums about Cyrille and Mary Murray before, but haven't had much luck.

James Arthur Dunbar/Lillian Hannah Ford

I am looking for any relatives of the above. Lillian Hannah Ford was my 1st cousin 2x removed and married James Arthur Dunbar in 1914. Her father, Isaac Ford was my great granduncle and am trying to connect with his family. I do know that Lillian died in 1986 in Cote St. Luc and James died in 1966 and both are buried in Mt. Royal Cemetery. However, I cannot find any records of any children. Lillian Hannah had two sisters, Edith, who never married and died in Montreal in 1989 and Elizabeth who died at 14 months in 1891. She also had a brother, William, born in 1893 who I also cannot find any other records for.

If there are any relatives out there, I would very much appreciate more info.

Thanks a bunch in advance,
Sue

There is no other data that I could find to confirm the surname or parentage of Cyrille Murry/Murray/Morin/Maura.

He appears in the majority of US records as Cyrille Murray/Murry. The instance of "Charles" is an anomaly, most likely the 1870 census transcriber took a best guess.

The Houghton County, Michigan Dibean Marriage Index - transcribed his name as Serrel MAURA. The Dibean's are excellent transcribers. http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/houghton/vitals/marriages/d...

It appears Cyrille died after 1920 in Michigan. I found him living in Marquette, Michigan in 1920. He was the informant on his wife's (Mary Laplante) death cert in 1917. I didn't find census data for him in 1900, 1910. I suspect he worked for the railroad, this may be the reason he did not appear in those census with his wife and children. I also suspect his death record may not have clues to his parentage, but I would still seek this record.

The marriage record for Cyrille Murry [SERREL MAURA] and Mary Laplant is the key to taking this search backwards. The records exists, but is not-online. Go here: http://www.houghtoncounty.net/directory-hcclerk.shtml.

You might also post on the Houghton (County), Michigan message board, and see if a volunteer who researches at the County Court House, might have a look at the record for you, and give you all and any details on it.

Come back when you get more data, and we'll see if we can't help you work back into Canada.

There is not enough data to search in Canada for this person.

The first issue is origin. Was this person French Canadian origin? This can be (relatively) determined by how they (and their parentage) are identified in the US census.

If they were FC origin, then the surname "Murry/Murray" is most likely an Anglicization of (possibly) Maurin, Morin or Marier.

The second issue is the marriage record. This record should be searched for, and is likely to be a parish record and will not be found on-line. This record will list the parents of both parties. Where exactly was the bride's family living at the time of the marriage?

A death record *might* list or give clues to possible parentage. Names of at least one of parents is mandatory for any search.

Their childrens' bap records (again, not on-line) should also be searched for and examined, this will help identify and confirm what the surname was before it was Anglicized.

There are other back doors (ie, associated family members, any siblings that migrated?) to use if these steps fail, but these are steps to take before attempting a search in Canada.

Found Joseph Alfred and pamela in ancestry.com. Huge error. Two families collided. There was a Fredrick and Mary neveau in same town. Several of their children listed as children of Alfred and Pamela. Blanche, Edna, Clifford, and they also had an Oscar as did Alfred and Pamela. Maybe this is where the error came in. They didn't have a Henry either. I am not a member of ancestry.com. Have been thinking of getting membership but I am not sure now that I see how careless people are. 1905 Census shows Joseph Alfred and Pamela in Pound, WI (Near Coleman where some of the children were born)Laura was the first child. Then Ernest, Leona, Alfred, Eva, Oscar and Ida.

I have an ancestor's marriage record where the priest put the Groom's Mother's name where the Bride's name belonged.
Alfred appears with Olivier and Angele in the 1881 Census in
Ste-Scholastique.

All of the ancestry is available.

Chris
Thanks Eileen, you have been very busy on my account. I have been told that the reason for the 2 marriages was that it was a mixed marriage. Peter was COI and Margaret was RC and they had to keep both priests happy apparently. The William on Griffiths is my GG Grandfather who is Peter's brother. I have been to see the registers on microfilm at the NLI in Dublin but there is no further information unfortunately. The parish records are somewhat incomplete and the earliest records are 1803. A local historian is convinced that the Glovers came from the north of Ireland to build churches in Kerry. I have a Walter who i believe is my link to the past.
Walter is listed as a soldier at his daughter's wedding in Killeentierna 1848. He also shows up in Castletownbere in 1822.
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...

I presume he was stationed at the military base there. I have had a search done of the regiments and again no luck. I keep drawing a blank with Walter which is why I decided to chase Peter to see if anything shows up in his Canadian records which might give me an idea of where they originally hailed from.
Many thanks for all your help.Much appreciated

They were married in Co. Kerry which suggests that at least Margaret was from there. Getting the original record on microfilm from the LDS will likely provide more info.

www.familysearch.org

Name: Peter Glover
Birth Date:
Birthplace:
Age:
Spouse's Name: Margaret Warren
Spouse's Birth Date:
Spouse's Birthplace:
Spouse's Age:
Event Date: 28 Mar 1865
Event Place: Killarney, Kerry, Ireland
Father's Name: William Glover
Mother's Name:
Spouse's Father's Name: John Warren

Interesting that I find a second marriage record for a different date:

Name: Peter Glover
Birth Date:
Birthplace:
Age:
Spouse's Name: Margaret Warren
Spouse's Birth Date:
Spouse's Birthplace:
Spouse's Age:
Event Date: 19 Nov 1867
Event Place: Kerry Co., Ireland
Father's Name: William Glover
Mother's Name:
Spouse's Father's Name: John Warren

Baptisms for some of the children:

Name: George Glover
Gender: Male
Christening Date:
Christening Place: DINGLE, KERRY, IRE
Birth Date: 01 Jan 1872
Birthplace: Dingle, Kerry, Ire
Death Date:
Name Note:
Race:
Father's Name: Peter Glover
Father's Birthplace:
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Margaret Warren

Name: John Glover
Gender: Male
Christening Date:
Christening Place:
Birth Date: 14 Jun 1879
Birthplace: Killarney, Kerry, Ireland
Death Date:
Name Note:
Race:
Father's Name: Peter Glover
Father's Birthplace:
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Margaret Warren Glover

Name: Peter Glover
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 09 May 1874
Christening Place: ROMAN CATHOLIC,CURROW,KERRY,IRELAND
Birth Date:
Birthplace:
Death Date:
Name Note:
Race:
Father's Name: Peter Glover
Father's Birthplace:
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Margaret Warren

Name: William Glover
Gender: Male
Christening Date:
Christening Place:
Birth Date: 20 Jul 1868
Birthplace: Kerry, Ireland
Death Date:
Name Note:
Race:
Father's Name: Peter Glover
Father's Birthplace:
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Margret Warren

Name: Margret Glover
Gender: Female
Christening Date:
Christening Place:
Birth Date: 24 Feb 1870
Birthplace: KERRY, IRELAND
Death Date:
Name Note:
Race:
Father's Name: Peter Glover
Father's Birthplace:
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Margret Warren

Name: Abigale Glover
Gender: Female
Christening Date:
Christening Place:
Birth Date: 14 May 1874
Birthplace: Kerry, Ireland
Death Date:
Name Note:
Race:
Father's Name: Peter Glover
Father's Birthplace:
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Margret Warren

This one gives a birth place for Peter:

Name: Catherine Glover
Gender: Female
Christening Date:
Christening Place:
Birth Date: 09 Apr 1876
Birthplace: Kerry, Ireland
Death Date:
Name Note:
Race:
Father's Name: Peter Glover
Father's Birthplace: Ranalugh
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Margret Glover Warren

Ranalough is a townland in the parish of Killeetiera, Co. Kerry.

This one makes me believe that the first marriage date is correct:

Name: Ellen Glover
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 26 Aug 1866
Christening Place: ROMAN CATHOLIC,CURROW,KERRY,IRELAND
Birth Date:
Birthplace:
Death Date:
Name Note:
Race:
Father's Name: Peter Glover
Father's Birthplace:
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Mgt. Warren

Name: Nora Glover
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 21 Jun 1865
Christening Place: ROMAN CATHOLIC,CURROW,KERRY,IRELAND
Birth Date:
Birthplace:
Death Date:
Name Note:
Race:
Father's Name: Peter Glover
Father's Birthplace:
Father's Age:
Mother's Name: Mgt. Warren

There is a William Glover (Peter's father) who appears in Griffith's Valuation in Ranalough, so I believe we have identified Peter's place of origin. It is possible that William was born elsewhere.

Some Co. Kerry parish records have been transcribed, and includes one for a likely brother to Peter:

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...

Even gives you Peter's mother's maiden name, Abigail Brosnan. And here is Peter's baptism:

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...

Abigail is noted as Elizabeth on this record, but same maiden name.

Baptism of Peter, son of Peter & Margaret:

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...

Someone searching the same family:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=577427.0

Doh ! That might be an idea alright. He was Peter Glover b1844, a stonemason from Killeentierna, Co. Kerry. He married Margaret Warren in 1867 and they had 10 children. They emigrated to Montreal in 1888. Peter died in 1919 and they family plot is
Notre-Dame des Neige Cemetery, Montrea, Canada
Concession 01328, Section B.
The Glovers are not originally from Kerry and my mission is to find out where they may have originated. I was hoping there might be clues in their emigration documentation or perhaps something in Canadian records somewhere.
Many thanks

Hello, I am trying to track down the context, if not a name, of a household in the 1891 Census. Many, many women were living in what I believe was a convent or workhouse, many of them nuns. The reference is the 365th page of Montreal Centre--> St. Louis Ward. The "Houses Inhabited" column has under it "P 4/32" and the "Families" column is "158". Many of them are Madeleine Sisters. I would simply love to know the name and address of the congregation.

Thanks,
Linda

I make a research on the link provided, and at the Registre des compagnies au Québec (online) and found that the 'Société de recherche historique Archiv-Histo' is a privatly owned company which makes data bases related to history, since 1981. It may very well be a good company, but it compiles data from information found elsewhere. It may be a good shortcut to find information if you do not have time to do the research otherwise. Hear me well, this is my very private opinion. The best and only reliable data is the official document, which is often difficult to find.

Hi,
I found Ethelred and Charlotte in the Canada, Voters Lists, 1935-1980, living at 107 Keewatin Avenue, Toronto until 1953. He had retired by then but was formerly a Caretaker. In 1957, Charlotte still resided on Keewatin as a "Widow". So that narrows his death date between 1953-57.

Due to privacy laws, there are no death records after 1940 for the public but you could try The Toronto Star archives http://pagesofthepast.ca/Default.asp They have subscriptions for 1 hr., 1 day and beyond. His obituary may be there. If you find the death date and want the actual death certificate, you could get it here:
http://www.vitalcertificates.ca/ontario/death-certificate/?g...

Hope this helps
Sue

P.S. Not a relative, just familiar with Ontario :)
