Seeking info on Collin Campbell whose gravestone in Oscoda, Michigan states "Born at St Polycarpe, Prov of Quebec, June 12, 1833".
Have searched the parish records of St Polycarpe at my local LDS without success - his baptism was not listed.

Any help in solving this mystery would be greatly appreciated.
Mike.

St-Polycarpe is a small city on the south shore of Montreal not so far from Vaudreuil..

For the name of the company , i can verify in the Lovell Directory on microfilm for those years, when it will be possible.

Jean - thanks for the reply. I'm not familiar with the Lovell Directory - what does it tell you?

I forgot to say in the original message that Collin Campbell was probably Catholic - Oscoda, MI has 2 cemeteries - his grave is in the Catholic cemetery.

Also, Collin's parents are listed as John Campbell and Catherine McDonald, if that helps.

Many thanks. Mike.

You might want to check for the record at the older and larger parish of Les-Cedres: St-Joseph-de-Soulanges, which has records from 1752-1974. The smaller St-Polycarpe records start in 1819. Sometimes baptisms took place at the larger location.

Sharyn

Thank you, Sharyn. I will look into the Les-Cedres: St Joseph de Soulanges records.

Mike,
If you’ve checked St. Polycarpe records, I assume you are aware of the marriage of an Angus Campbell (John & Catherine McDonald) to Isabelle McDonald (John & Catherine McDonald) on October 13, 1857.

There is also a Donald Campbell (John & Catherine McDonald) who married a Catherine McDonald (Hugh & Rachel McDonald) in St. Raphael Parish, St. Raphael, Glengarry County, Ontario.

St. Raphael is not far from St. Polycarpe.

James,

Thanks for the information.

The LDS films I had were
1028342, Index 1819-1876 Registres 1819-1832, and
1028343, Registres 1833-1847.

So I knew Angus was married, but didn't know the spouse.
Angus was born Mar 11, 1828, and bapt Mar 12, 1828, in St Polycarpe, and would presumably be Collin's brother. (the films didn't have the Registre for 1857).

There were also 2 other brothers baptised in St Polycarpe, Nicolas born Sep 11, 1832 and Guillaume born May 12, 1835.

I didn't have the details of the Donald Campbell marriage, but I was aware that there were Campbells in Glengarry - but didn't have any way to connect them until now. With parents John Campbell and Catherine McDonald, Donald was presumably another brother to Collin - but like Collin, he wasn't baptized in St Polycarpe.

This all assumes there weren't two married couples John Campbell and Catherine McDonald!

Mike.

An update on the Collin Campbell baptism.

I checked Les Cedres parish without success. Next I checked the 1851 census, and the family was in Newton, near Saint Polycarpe. Parents gave their birthplaces as Glengarry, children all born in Newton (close to Saint Polycarpe).

Colin was there, his approximate birthdate given by the census corresponded with that of Nicolas Campbell, who was in the Saint Polycarpe register but not in the census.

A check of a names website showed that Colin could be a pet form of Nicholas. So I now believe that the family may have wanted him named Colin, but the priest baptised him Nicholas, using what he presumably considered the "proper" form of the name.

I believe you are probably connected to the same family, but what makes you think Flora was born in Oscoda in 1863? Do you have her birth certificate or parish birth record?

Per my research, Collin Campbell never actually lived in Oscoda, but a number of his children did. He was visiting one of them when he died in 1885.

The good news is that the three children you listed - Harriet, Mary and Flora - match the 3 eldest children I have for Collin Campbell - who with wife Christina apparently had 13 children.

I believe Collin came to Michigan between 1862 and 1866, but that is based on the childrens ages and birhtplaces given in the 1870 US census. If you have birth information for Flora, and she was born in Michigan, then the date I have for Collin moving to Michigan may be incorrect.

I can provide you with more information on the other children and the descendants - but what do you have on Flora and her 2 sisters?

Mike.
