Magowan (McGowan) family history
Can you please give me your information about the locality in which James Magowan lived, or the possible birth place of his son, William George Magowan? All of the Magowans about which I have information lived in Alburgh, Vermont, New York, and possibly Eastern Township area of Quebec. James Magowan may possibly have been related to those I know of, but I cannot just now find out how.

Thank you, Fay, for answering my query. Is it true that John McGowan was born in 1771 and died in 1885 (age 114)? That must have been a record for those days. Still looking for some proof of parentage of Lucretia Babcock born ca 1801, died 1850, who may have been a daughter of George and Margaret (McGowan or Magowan) Babcock. Lucretia married John Hammond, son of Consider Morgan Hammond and wife, Freelove Dunham Hammond. Her first two sons were named Benjamin (for father of Consider) and George (for her father?). So far no firm proof. Her birthplace remains a mystery because she died in 1850 just months before the census was taken. Thank you for your assistance.

Fay I saw this one, thanks for posting I had always wondered where the McGowan came from as I have a much later day one I was trying to tie in with my line Robert McGowan married Evelyn Boardman who was born 1916, they had four children Claire Aliceb 1942, Robert Arthur born 1943, Eleen Martha born 1946 and Patrick Donald born 1947. I guess I will now look to the Grande Ilse area to see if I can hook on to one of these lines, hoping to trace my Boardman family

Hi Robert Douglas Macfie; At least 4 of the children of John Magowan and Mary Young Magowan are buried in " Mud Creek " Cemetary in Alburg Center Vt.I believe the athority on this is Mr. Bell of Alburg area who has done books on the area familys in conjuction with others [ bellvt@aol.com ]The history of Alburg by Allen L. Stratton has much to add. You are probably aware of my rather different approch . I traced my Young family BACK from Stanstead PQ Canada to Foucault- Cadwell Manor - St John , Alburg AREA then to Whithall Ny [ Skeensboro [ was it VERMONT or NY ] then to SCOTLAND . I have had enough help from relatives and official records to feel very comfortable with the results .THEN CAME THE DIFFERENT APROACH -- I CAME FORWARD ON THE DECENDANTS OF ALEXANDER YOUNG !-AND THERE are A LOT OF THEM. NEEDLES TO SAY THE RESULTS MUST HAVE SOME ERRORS BUT PROVIDES A LOT OF LEADS. THANKS TO SUCH THINGS AS THE GREAT MAPS YOU HAVE PROVIDED THERE IS MORE PROOF .I have not compleat proof the Mary Young Magowan , the daughter of Alexander Young is the correct Mary but it is most likly .
