Surnames: Campbell, Melaven
Looking for information on great-great-grandparents, Owen Campbell and Mary Melaven. I believe Owen Campbell was born in Ireland and Mary Melaven was born in Canada (see below). Despite, many efforts, I seem to have hit a roadblock and cannot trace Owen Campbell and Mary Melaven before or after the 1851-1854 time period.

At the Library and Archives Canada website, The Canada Directory 1851 lists an Owen Campbell in Henryville, occupation/trade = general store.

The only other Campbells listed under Henryville are Patrick Campbell (occupation/trade = general store) and a Dr. Charles Campbell (not sure of the relationship, if any, to Owen Campbell).

On Robert Macfie's most wonderful and excellent website, I was able to find Owen Campbell at Lot Number 28 in the 1854 property listing of the Seigneurie de Noyan as well as the Canada Directory 1851 listing mentioned above. However, no later directories of Henryville on this website showed an Owen Campbell.

I could not find an Owen Campbell in the 1880 Canada Census, nor an Owen Campbell in Vermont, where their children Edwin and Eva moved to around 1869 - 1870.

The information I have on their children is:
Edwin Sabens Campbell
- born June 18 1851 (or maybe 1850) in Henryville Quebec.
- US (VT) Census records indicate Edwin came to US in 1869, 1870 or 1879 (Naturalized Citizen in 1883 or 1885).
- US (VT) Census records indicate father (Owen) born in Ireland, mother (Mary Melaven) born in Canada.

Eva M. Campbell
- born Sept 1865 (or maybe 1866) in Henryville Quebec.
- US (VT) Census records indicate Eva came to US in 1869, 1871.
- US (VT) Census records indicate father (Owen) born in Ireland, mother (Mary Melaven) born in Canada.

I have the marriage certificates for both Edwin and Eva (both were married in Vermont) and they show Henryville as their place of birth and list Owen Campbell and Mary Melaven as their parents.

After coming to the US, Edwin lived in Vermont in Lamoille County (Belvidere, Eden, Johnson) and Franklin County (Montgomery, Swanton).

After coming to the US, Eva lived in Lamoille County, Vermont (Eden, Johnson, and possibly Waterville).

I would be grateful for any and all leads. I am not so much interested in adding lots of potential names to our family tree - rather, I prefer to find as many details as possible about individual ancestors and create an accurate picture of their life story.

Any help in bringing these lost ancestors "back to life" would be most appreciated, and I would be happy to reciprocate with research in Vermont for anyone willing to help me learn more about Owen and Mary . (Many of the VermontState Archives are within a ten minute walk from my house, and the Vermont Public Records building is a fifteen minute drive).

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide!

Unfortunately I have not done much work on Roman Catholic families in this area. I went through my copy of the book on Henryville and while it lists many Campbell families, it does not provide a match for yours. Even today there are many Cambell families in Henryville. Perhaps you might want to write to the City Hall and ask them to post a note on their bulletin board about your interest in these particular Campbells. You never know what you might get back.
While I make no promises.... I will keep a hard copy of this posting and should I come across anything while i am sifting through records i will try and get it back to you .....Please do not hold your breath as It is not that often i get time at the main Montreal Library ... but I will make an effort.

send me a private e mail and I will forward you the directory web site and you can look for yourself

Hi Robert,

i ran across this post by chance and saw that you referenced a book on Henryville. I have many ancestors who lived in Henryville and am trying to get more indepth information on them. I would be interested if you could tell me if there are references between 1830 - 1870 to the families of Joseph Theodore Amable Ouimet (Amable) and Olympe Louise Choiniere, Augustin Marcellin Talon dit L'Esperance and Marguerite Comette, Bruno Theophile (Tuffield) Bourgeois and Marcelline (Martine) Ouimet.......I have tried looking for census info, but it seems that info for St George d'Henryville is incomlete or unavailable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Dave

As far as i can tell it is only the 1851 Census that is missing for Henryville .... all other records are in tact ..

there is a n 1861 1871 and 1891 census recording that are located in Archives in Ottawa. i do not know if they have any intention of putting them out on the inter net , but it cetain would help us all.

In any case we all have acces to the mirco film records.. it is only a matter of finding out how we can get to look at them the only expericen I have had is with the 1851 records and those were at my local Genealogy Society. I have two phot copy pages of the 1891 that one of my relatives made for Clarenceville but it only shows our Macfie families....

for certain the records exist at least......

On my Henryville web page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~macfie/henryville.h...

you will find the address of the city hall. I have suggested so fat to any one tracing there since it most French Roman Catholic records that they wrtie a letter to the local Priest asking him to check out the records , then to mail that letter to the City Hall with another letter asking them to give the the first letter to the local Priest ......

i do not know if any one has tried this or if it works, but as i have done no tracing in this area i do not know of a better way

Douglas

There are several books you can purchase if available for Henryville. I just picked up the 175th Anniversary book for Henryville which seems to focus on old houses and not old families. There is a 200th Anniversary book available which may focus on the old families of Henryville.

Municipalité Henryville

I have another older book that I believe is hard to find. Some good genealogies and old pictures as well and lots of history if you can read French.
