Recently became a member of this site. I have tons of info on the Bergie/ Poitra families. I am the granddaughter of Martin and Mary Bergie. Mary's maiden name of Poitra. My mother is still alive and lost Grandma Bergie 3 years ago at the age of 100. She shared lot's of family history going back to Fort Totten when she was all of a baby. Grandpa's brother Joseph I met as achild several times when we visited thier resort on Flathead Lake as a child. Grandpa had his brother Joseph and 2 sisters Mary Jane and Helen. His mother's name was Caroline. Joseph had 5 children. 3 boys, Ronald (Bugsy) was one the other 2 mom is trying to remember the names. She is 76 years young. His daughter's names are June, Helen and ??. Yes my mother remembers Aunt Rosalie and Uncle Joe very well. The pickett name comes in with the Poplar Indian school where my Grandpa Bergie (Martin) worked with Ila Mae Picketts father. He worked in the hospital part of the school repairing equipment while Martin was the carpenter. As a matter of fact the cabins he built from scratch are still on Flathead Lake just outside of Big Fork. Grandma Bergie (Poitra) was of French backround. My mom recalls that her Grandma Poitra spoke no english but French and native Indian. My Grandma spoke native Indian also especially as she approached the 100 year old marker. Fortunately she live for over 25 years next door to my mom and dad so growing up she was right there. She moved to Seattle after Grandpa passed away in 1976 from cancer. He also lived here for a little over a year while having treatments. My mom being a nurse he felt it important to be out in Seattle to get the best care possible. The joyful Grandpa any child would dream of having! He was funny, and loved all things! He and his brother Joe actually played football with Jim Thorpe. Joe from the stories told almost ruined Jim Thorpes athletic career from one tackle that nearly broke his leg. If anyone out there needs more info I'm happy to say there are family photo's that my grandma packed away. Some of them are on 1/4"glass plates we had developed for her 90th birthday and a treasure they are. My mom Irene(Bergie) remained out in Seattle after nursing school married my dad and all eight of us children are registered also at the Turtle Mountain Registry under our last name of Rowe. Martin, Charlotte, Mary, William, Carol (Deseased 2002) Robert, Patricia, Susan. I'm Patricia. Grandpa called me "a P & a J".
Email me at landerson2@qwest.net if you want more info.
This is very interesting to say the least.
Also my dad informed me that at Fort Totten N.Dakota near Devil's Lake there is a wealth of family history there for both theBergie and Poitra families.

I was directed here by my cousin Mike Bergie and his niece Jessica Bergie-Clark. I am originally from Poplar, Mt. My grandparents are Joseph and Rosalie Bergie. My mother is Genevieve Ann Bergie-McClammy (Deceased August 2, 1991). I am very interested in any information you can share. I am (35) the youngest in my family of 8 brothers and sisters.Their names are Rose Akers (mom's daughter by a previous marriage), Joni Lynn McClammy, Carol Gilham, Billie Jean Norgaard, Diana Jo McClammy-Cook, John Todd Knapp McClammy, Rita Catherine McClammy, and me Will James Joseph McClammy. My brother and my six sisters all still live in the Poplar area. I now live in Topeka, KS and have been working and going to graduate school here for the past 10+ years. I am married to a lovely Pottawotomi girl and I have 3 daughters Ashley Corrin (17), Courtney Nicole (13), and Stephanie Renae (10). One story I have heard about grandpa Joe is that during the game against Army, Dwight D. Eisenhower was matching Jim Thorpe run for run until grandpa Joe put a lick on Ike and broke Ike's leg so he could not finish the game; Carlisle went on to win the game. I am looking forward to talking and sharing stories with you. P.S. Do you happen to have any of the pictures from Joe and Martin's days at Carlisle? I have one of the football team, and another of grandpa at Canton Ohio during his coaching days.
