Branches of these JARRARDs migrated to the following counties in New York State: Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Dutchess, Essex, Franklin, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren, and Washington.

They were mobile. Several branches were Champlain Canal families (canalers) and dotted themselves, and resided from time to time, from Montreal, Quebec, along the Hudson River, to New York City and New Jersey.

The family settled on the spelling JARRARD, but they can be found in records in any mixture of the following formula:

G/J A,E,I R(R) A,E,O (R) D
such as Gerard, Girrard, Jarod, Jerrord — every which way. It's been a bugger finding records.

I thought maybe the root name was Fitzgibbons, but have no instance of that. Just a guess.

I have been researching this family for ten years. I know a lot about the family from 1860 (and later) but because — before that — the family was in English-speaking Quebec, Canada, I hit a brick wall. I hired a genealogist to help.

Recently, I found the family in the following Canadian census, which we are following up:

1851 Census of Canada East, Canada West, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia:

James Garrad

[No known connection other than they are there:

There are no obvious McGibbons families as neighboring families.

On http://www.swquebec.ca, appears we found a baptism record for Jane and James Jarrard/Gerrard's child William Jarrard/Gerrard, but which doesn't specify the church:

Baptism:
ID     Date   Surname, Given Name     Mother
18467   1847   Gerrard, William James   Given, Jane

There are a lot of McGibbons in this database.

Part of the problem is relating later New York State locations with specific locations they (and relatives) were earlier in Quebec. I don't know Quebec. I don't speak French. Related locations seem to be:

Quebec:

Vercheres, Lajemmerais
Huntingdon
Monteregie near Havelock
Montérégie
St-Christophe
St-Clotilde
Sherrington
St-Bernard-de-Locolle

Frankly, I get confused with Quebec's town and city names with saint-names. My eyes start glazing over.

-----
Town names in New York State circulating around my Jarrards:

Chateaugay, Franklin County
Fort Edward, Washington County
Mechanicville, Saratoga County
Plattsburgh, Clinton County
Schenectady

Sincerely,

Laura Carlos
