My mother was a St Onge and it took several years of research to determine that her father, Wallace Payan St Onge had dropped the "Payan" in his name when he moved from Acton Vale, Quebec Canada to Willimantic, CT. His father was Louis Paan St Onge and mother was Julienne Tellier. The oldest generation that we have documented is Francois Payan St Onge born abt 1650 in Saint Colombe, France - married about 1670 in St Onge, France to a Magdelaine Quentin (also have a spelling of Madeleine Cantin) - Several generations forward we do have a Jean Baptiste Payan Saint Onge born April 2, 1726 to a Joseph Payan Saint Onge and Marie Genevievre Legris. Would be more than happy to send you the different generations if this is your line.

I don't know if it could help, but there is some infos from my living region...Joseph Payant (dit St-Onge) arrives in St-Jean-sur Richelieu in 1731. He was, as we say, a shoemaker (most in winter) but all summer long he was "maître de barque" (same as a captain, driving the boats from one place to another - mostly the forts all over Richelieu River to United States- to bring food and differents utilitary object). He was recognize and really admired, and "parait-il", a fan of Montcalm (wich was not so common, Montcalm was a fat, pretentious guy...but he was nice to payant family too?!)Payant contributed much in the war against the british and some had surname him the admiral! Some stories tells us that this is from this family than the name "montcalm" had really came over here; because of Payant was a huge fan of Montcalm (the real one!). The story tells that when one of the great son's of Joseph Payant (jean-Baptiste) had gone to church to baptise his son, the priest would'nt gave the child a name like that (payant was pronouced "payien", wich litteraly means: pagan, or "non-religious"?!) So he look at the father turn his head right and left, and told him something like: So you're really look like Montcalm, you know..." And so, the priest baptised the kid with the name "Montcalme" on the papers...!
(So if somebody claims to be a Montcalm desc., there probably wrong and came from the "boater"'S family...Montcalm didn't have any kids over here, as I know!!!
