I am searching for information on Hiram Gleason b. abt 1825 in Brome, Quebec. His first wife was Ezoe (Ezoa) Wells b. abt 1830 in Brome and he married her Feb. 1849, in East Farnham, Brome, possible daughter of Ezoe Collins and Jonathan Wells. They had at least one son, Gilbert Wells Gleason, b. 1853 in East Farnham. Hiram then married Helen Wells (Hellen Willis), b. 1844, Quebec. Marriage occured in 1871, they had at 3 children, Flora (Florence), Dora, and Maggie Ida Gleason (or Flora, Maggie and Ida, records differ). Ida married Edson Hamilton, Flora married Charles Wallace, and Dora married unknown Go(o)dwin. There is an Uncle Horace in the family, and some Moourhouse (Mourhouse) cousins, and some Wells cousins. A James Gleason is also mentioned, but no information is known about him, other then a possible brother or cousin to Gilbert Wells Gleason. Any information at all would be greatly appreciated as I have hit a dead end.

Hi, LJohnson,

I realize your post was made quite a few years ago, however I am also hunting for information on this family and will be happy to share what I know in case you are still interested. All of the records I have used are available here at ancestry.

The church register of the marriage between Ezoa Wells and Hiram Gleason was in the Methodist church, and was witnessed by Gilbert Wells and Julia Wells, "being half cou to Ezoa Wells who is eighteen years of age." The 1861 Canadian census for Brome (p.147) lists the couple with three children, Charles E (11), Gilbert (8), and Florence A (1).

By 1871, as you know, Hiram presumably had been widowed and married Helen D Wells. The marriage took place 19 Sept 1871, which must have been after the taking of the 1871 census, when Hiram was listed with Florence alone (see the next paragraph for the probable location of the boys at this time). This marriage was performed in Shefford by a Free Will Baptist minister and witnessed by David Wells and Silas Bourn(?). The 1881 census lists the couple with Flora (20), as well as new children Ida (9) and Maggie (5).

Charles and Gilbert both appear to have emigrated to St. Charles, Missouri. They are both listed in the 1870 US census there, though boarding separately with other families. I am related to a Charles Gleason from Missouri, married to Margaret Cobb, and believe it is the same person because my relative's children were named James, Flora, Gilbert, and Margaret (same names as Hiram's children, except I have not found evidence of another James yet--perhaps it is the same as your James, perhaps mine is named after yours). The story that has been passed down to me is that Margaret died and Charles remarried, and the 4 children were sent to live with her sister. I have not yet found evidence to corroborate this or any trace of Charles Gleason or his wife Margaret after 1880.

I also have not located anything on Florence/Flora (daughter of Hiram and Ezoa) after the 1881 Census.

Regarding Hiram's daughters with Helen, Margaret Gleason appears to have moved to the US and married and divorced at least three times, to John Walter Koster, Walter P Bryant, and Elwood F Abbott, in that order. The divorce records are all from New Hampshire.

Ida Jane married Edison/Edson Hamilton. She and her mother are both buried in Holy Trinity Anglican Church Cemetery in Iron Hill (which is now in Brome-Missiquoi, Quebec). I hope this helps in your search and would be interested to hear if you have turned up anything new.

Hi

Sorry for the delay in replying. It appear that I missed the notification for the reply to my message and I just happened to come across it as a fluke. The information that I found in the ensuing years matches what you have posted as well as some new information.

Florence (Flora) Gleason, daughter of Hiram and Ezoa moved to Wolfboro, Carroll County, NH with her husband Charles O. Wallace, marriage date and location are uknown at this time.

James Gleason as I mentioned in a previous post is the son of Charles Gleason, nephew to Gilbert (and foster son of Gilbert Wells Gleason's wife's father -good luck with that)

Dora Godwin is not part of the Gleason family, information was incorrectly passed down but it has been resolved.

The Moorhouse cousins, are in fact cousins to Gilbert. His father's (Hiram) sister (Sophia) married a Moorhouse.

It is amazing what a couple of years can provide in terms of research, who knows what else I will come across over the next couple of years. I hope this information helps and I am sorry about the delay in replying.
