Church, Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Roxton Falls, Quebec

Where is the church, Saint-Jean-Baptiste located in Roxton Falls.. I have the baptism record for my Great great grandmother, Marie Tremblay, who was baptised at this church in 1853.. When I searched this church on line, it indicates it was constructed in 1862... Is this the same church or was there another one in 1853...
Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you...
Sandy

Hi,

If you look at this site: Roxton Falls (Saint-Jean-Baptiste) - Originis, it says that the registers were open in 1850 (the 24 of february).

Thank you for your helpful information.. I will be visiting this church in the near future and of course I will take pictures to add to my family history... Would you happen to know if there is a cemetary for this church.. Some of these relatives died in the 1850's and 1860 and must have been buried there. Perhaps there are no markers for the graves, but I'd still like to see where they were buried... Thank you again, I appreciate it..

I found the St-Jean Baptiste's cemetery from the same town.
It's on Notre-Dame street, Roxton Falls.

As for your relatives, can you give me any names or other indications.

I found Bénoni Tremblay, father of Marie, born:record not found but I will keep up looking.
Marie's mother was Julienne Moyse born 26-09-1824 St-Joachim, Châteauguay. She died 15-10-1880 St-Antoine Abbé,Huntingdon county.. Julienne's mother was Louise Guérin and her father Michel Moyse.
They were married 3-10-1848 (don't know where)
I found one children for Bénoni and Julienne. His name was Bénoni born may 1850 and died 7-11-1850 St-Jean Baptiste, Roxton Falls.
I will keep searching, but if you have something that could help me , it would be easier.

Thank you for your help. It's very kind of you.

I know that Benoni or Belonie's parents are Michel Tremblay b. 12 Feb. 1792 ,Charlevoix, Quebec and Josephte Brault b. abt. 1799. I have a marriage place and year for Michel and Josephte, 1819 Lachine, Ile de Montreal, Benoni had two sisters that I know of, Julie Tremblay, b. 1828 and Elizabeth b. 1831 at Ste. Martine de Chateauguay., perhaps Benoni was also born there. I didn't have Julienne's date of death. I thank you for giving me this date. Julienne and Benoni were married at Ste Martine on the date you have. I do have a copy of this church record.I don't have Benoni's death record either..Some of the missing pieces I've been searching for a while and was unable to find.

The Moyse(Moise) family and Tremblay family lived over the border in Chateaugay and Churubusco NY area, which I believe is close to St-Antoine Abbe..Julienne's brother, Jacques Moyse and his wife Adelaide Damm were the parents of Toussaint Moyse who married Marie Tremblay the 10 July 1870 at St. Patrick in Chateaugay NY...The Moise name change to Moses and the family is in the 1860 census for Chateaugay, NY. My great great grandfather, Toussaint's name is listed as Theodore, age 12.. I guess the census taker thought Theodore was close enough....

To complicate matters, Knowing that Marie Tremblay was born April 22, 1853 at Roxton Falls, and marrying Toussaint Moyse(Moise) b. 2 Sept. 1847, Ste.Martine,.at the age of 17, they had a son, Stephen Joseph Moyse(Moise) born March 8, 1867 in Churubusco,NY.. Stephen was my great grandfather. I have never found a birth record for Stephen b. 1867 and I don't believe Marie Tremblay is his birth mother.. When you do the math, she would have been 13 years old when he was born.. I know woman had children very young back then, but in this family, there are stories about native american blood, Mohawk. I know the St. Regis reserve is in that area. Until I can find some documented proof, it's only heresay..What I think is perhaps Toussaint had his son with a native indian and she died when Stephen was very young and needing a mother for his son, he ended up marrying his first cousin, Marie Tremblay...Their next child was born February 1870 in Chateaugay,NY, before their marriage. Her name was Marie and I think she is buried at St Antoine Abbe.
A story I heard about Stephen Moise b. 1867 is that he use to participate in the indian ceremonies and he dressed up in their traditional clothing while he was living in NY.. I would think one had to be of indian descent to be allowed to do this. For now this can only be treated as a story until I can find his birth record. Maybe he was born at St Antoine Abbe.. I never thought to check that out.. I think his sister, Marie was baptised at St Philomene in Chateaugay,NY..I do know that Stephen Moise (Moses) died in Vermont in 1839.. This was the document I used to trace his parents...

After reading this, you're probably saying to yourself, do I really want to get involved. I always said that one of these days I will find the answers to my family mysteries...

I also have my Tetrealt line that married into the Moise family. Stephen's wife, Rose Tetrealt who was born in Worcester, Mass. in 1872. Her father, Pierre was born in St. Hyacinthe. It's Rose's mother, Philomene Cassista, daughter of Firmin Cassista and Amelie Girard who is said to also be part native american... I know the Cassista line is not indian but not sure of the Girard family, however Amelie's mother's name is Marie Rondeau... In this family, they lived in Swanton,VT and the earliest record I have for Philomene is the 1850 census for Swanton when she was 3 years old. Her marriage and death records say she was born in Brandon,VT, however when I contacted the town clerk's office, they said they can't find any record of her birth and if she was indian it may be in the old land record books. The Cassista family name has many different variations like Casataw, Cachester, Curtis was the last name used. Anyway, I apologize for rattling on, but you can see I have alot of work still ahead.. I can't say I'll ever get board, always something to do.
Thank you for your help and whatever you find on my family, would be greatly appreciated. I hope you have a very pleasant day. Thank you again.

Sandy

Claire,

You're right, many questions...Please don't feel like you have to take this on.. I didn't intend that. I realize it's alot of work. Whatever information you do come across would be so appreciated. .. . It was only this week that I finally found the baptism for Benoni's daughter, Marie Tremblay.. I just stumbled upon it when I did a search. I saw the baptism for a Marie Tremblay at Roxton Falls and at first I wasn't going to look at the record because I thought the family was only in Ste-Martine. I'm glad I did take a closer look because I found it and this was another unsolved piece of information I've been looking for, for a long time. Thank you again for your help.
