I am interested to know what happened to grandson of Duncan and Mary Roger (through their son Peter, sawmiller in Rosehall, Ross & Cromarty). Grandson John Gregor Macgillivray married in Cawdor in 1864 a cousin of my Macgillivrays (who seemingly were not connected) named Catherine Dallas (from Inchyettle, Cawdor).
John and Catherine had children John Gregor and Sarah (twins born in 1866), Catherine (1870), Duncan (1872) and Alexander Simpson Hendry Macgillivray (1873). The last two were born in Plymouth, England. I can't find them on the 1881 census. Where did they go?
Many other members of the Dallas family emigrated.
Catherine Dallas' brother Alexander was a solicitor in Inverness, Lachlan Dallas (described by a relative as a "good man" went to America, Peter Dallas was a grocer in Nairn and emigrated to Ohio, John Dallas and sister Margaret to America, other siblings remained in Scotland. Many thanks for any information.

I am looking for any information the family of John Gillen born in Ireland abt 1916, his wife Mary b. abt 1817 in Ireland. They have six children Bridget- born in Ireland, Anne, Catherine, Susan, James and John who son would marry Mary Jennie McElreavy. Looking for anything on the Gillens, particularly when and how they came to Canada. I am thinking sometime between 1844-1848 but not sure. Would also like to know of any spouses that they had etc. I have seen censuses for 1861, 1871, Leeds, Megantic, Quebec but nothing before that. Thanks Sheila

Mr. Ross,
I am only a guest on Ancestry. In doing research for someone else yesterday I was looking into the Sangster background. The Drouin records led me to believe the following information:
Jane McCotter may have been a married name. There were documents signed by people with the last name "Church" which made me wonder if that was her maiden name.

It appeared to me she was married to a "William McCotter" and had a child with him named John McCotter or McCutter in the records in 1826.
I found a burial for William McCotter in 1827.
In 1828 a Jane McCotter (records show as "James" instead of Jane) married my ancestor bachelor John Sangster (1785-1858) and indicated she was a widow. It then appears she died soon...
A wedding in 1831 indicate John Sangster the widower marrying Helen Stein (records show her as Eleanor Stean on marriage, also as Helaine, and Ellen in Census records) Followed her to living with her daughter Mary(Sangster)Tuckett, and next door to both her son John & other daughter Ellen(Sangster)Cummings/Comming/Cumins.

Your research has me wondering if we are talking about the same Jane McCotter woman, or a generational gap. If you find anything further, please let me know. I don't have any "Ross" information, but would appreciate if you have further information to bridge the gaps in my research.
Sincerely
AnjSangster@yahoo.ca

Mahony, White, Kelly families from Leeds Township, Megantic County, Quebec

Timothy Mahony and Elizabeth Fitzgerald came to Leeds Township sometime between 1816 and 1825. Daughter Ellen Mahony married Patrick Whyte and they had one daughter Ellen White who was born Leeds in 1835 and she married John Kelly born Nova Scotia in 1820, who was the widower of Catherine Manning in 1856. Their six children are Patick b. about 1858 in Leeds township; William b. 1860, Leeds township; Elizabeth b.1862 Leeds township; James Kelly b. 1864, Leeds township d. 1921 in Presque Isle Maine; John Kelly b, 1870 Leeds township; and Thomas Kellyb 1873 Leeds township. While these families lived in Leeds Township there was not Catholic Church at the time and they were probably baptized in St .Sylvestre which is the next town over from Leeds.

The 1901 Canadian Census shows John Kelly age 80, wife Ellen (White) Kelly age 65 and son John Kelly age 30 and single, still living in Leeds Township, Megantic County, Quebec. The two men are listed as farmers.

I am looking for information on any if these people or on others in their family line. Michael Mahoney

Hi - I just came across your post today. My husband's great grandmother (Mary jane Ashcroft Smith Nelson) was a sister to Sarah 'Sally' Ashcroft Fitzpatrick.

Her daughter Eliza Jane had a second daughter in May of 1891 and then died of typhoid fever in November of that year. The two girls went to live with their grandparents Sarah & Atcheson Fitzpatrick. (See 1901 Census of Canada where they are listed as 'Fitzpatrick').

That whole family moved to southern Alberta in 1905 (see Census of Canada for 1906). One of the local history books entitled 'Trails to Highways' which is online on the www.ourroots.ca website has more information about the family on the following pages 100- 105.

Second daughter was Elizabeth 'Lizzie' May Thrower. She married Clem Brinker and had 4 children. In same book go to page 40- 42 for info on Elizabeth and her family.

First daughter Sarah Georgina Thrower married Sidney Ward and pages 307 - 309 have information her family. Page 155 lists them as attendants at a wedding.

If you are a member of this website please go to my family tree for some information.

Sincerely Donna Voisey.

My great grandfather,John from Kilmarnock, married Catherine Hamilton of Arran and emigrated to Inverness, Quebec in 1856. They stayed there until about 1880 and were forced to pack up and move south, to Lawrence, Mass. My late Aunt, Catherine Wood, John's grandaughter, bemoaned "that terrible farm", indicating that the going was rough and probably not suited to a weaver from the mainland. Many of the Inverness families moved to the Lawrence-Lowell area as there was a substantial Scottish community there probably due to the mills. Dugald McKenzie's offspring were living in the30s and 40s in my hometown of St. Albans, Vt. A visit to Inverness several years ago yielded only the Scottish burial grounds in the center of the village where English is no longer spoken. What was originally (1829) meant to be a new settlement in Ontario ended in failure in Quebec.

I have no information as to Why or How he / they arrived at either Waterloo / Saint-Dunstan / Lac Beauport or Broughton. The records I have indicate a marriage in Lac Beauport with three children born there and three in Broughton before the trek to the mid north of Ontario where the other four children were born. I suspect maybe other family members were already there.
Interesting and a family history adventure for sure.

He married Catherine Kirkparick in Ireland and they had one son David b. abt.1826 in Ireland. John remarried and left Ireland about 1840 and settled in Megantic County. Catherine died abt.1830 His son David married Catherine King in Leeds Quebec. She was also born in Ireland. I would love to have any leads on this family if you have any. Catherine Kirkpatrick's mother and 8 brothers all came to New Brunswick and settled there. I would love to have descendants of her daughter attend our family reunion next summer.

That's good! David and Jane only had two children and they died young. David and Catherine had seven that I can find.
Samuel Lowry b 1855 – Mary Catherine Lowry b 1861 – David John Lowry 1863 – 1951 Susan Jane Lowry b 1866 – Henry Alexander Lowry 1869 – 1951 Margaret Ann Lowry 1871 – 1962 Sarah Lowry b 1874 – . If I were you, I might consider the descendents of Dr Ira King Lowry, David and Catherine's grandson, the son of their son David John. There is quite a bit about David and Catherine's family on Ancestry. Also, if you check Canada 411, you will find a lot of Lowrys still in the Townships. The ones around the Cookshire-Sawyerville-Eaton area are especially likely. If you e-mail me at sreed85@sympatico.ca, I could suggest some possibilities. You might write to a couple of them, just to see what you could find out.

Cheers,

Susan

John Lowry was born in Ireland abt.1795. His first wife was Catherine Kirkpatrick also born in Ireland. They had one son David, b.Oct.31,1826,Ballyshannon,Ireland died, Apr.14 1910 in Megantic County and buried at Riverside Memorial Cemetery. Catherine died 1830, in Ireland.John remarried and along with his new wife and son immigrated to Quebec. I am trying to find descendants of David Lowrey. His grandmother, Margaret Kirkpatrick (Catherine's mother)immigrated to New Brunswick (abt.1831) with her eight sons.Until recently it was never known for sure that Margaret had a daughter. We have had a couple reunions honouring Margaret and her 8 sons. Next year we plan another one and I would love to contact members of her daughter's family. Any information on the Lowerys from the Megantic area would be greatly appreciated.

At that time, Lac Beauport was a settlement with the name Waterloo Settlement. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lac-Beauport
This might explain to you why Robert Ross was there first and then move to Megantic where the land was disponible. He probably was a soldier and then a farmer.

I saw this census also but Albert, Francois, & John don't make sense as they are not listed on any other census. Also Lesa would only correspond to Margaret by looking at the dates (Margaret was 4 at the time of the 1871 census, and Lesa listed as 14 at the time of the 1881 census).

I have only found the birth records (copies) for William, Eliza Jane, Mary Anne, Esther, Isabel, Rachel, Sarah, Marjory, Margaret, Joseph, John & Thomas. Although, there were more children according to the various census records.

Seems odd to me that with such a large family, there does not seem to be anyone on the boards or net (that I can find) who are also researching this lineage.
