I think I amy have found the answer to the mystery of the MARTIN - GRAHAM names for Jane/Jennie
that is, if the Ruth I found in Boston is the right one - let me know.
I gave you the 1891 and 1901 census for the Donald Martin family with Jane 18 being with them in 1891
but now I took a look at the 1881 census and it is interesting
1881 WINSLOW SOUTH, COMPTON, QUEBEC
Donald, 52 born Scotland
Annie 40, wife born Scotland
Mary Ann age 21 born Quebec
William 19, born Quebec
Jane 17 born Quebec
John 15 born Quebec
George 13 born Quebec
Isabella 9 born Quebec
Jane Ann age 8 born Scotland
so if this is correct then the birth place shown for Ruth's mother Jennie A. Graham being born Greenock - still not sure why it has Cal after it, but there is a Greenock in Scotland
since Donald and Anne Martin came from Scotland I wonder if Jane Ann was somehow related to them?
I had a thought, as she is age 8 in 1881 so born about 1873 and since Anne came from Scotland about 1876 maybe Anne is Jane's mother and married Donald after coming to Canada???
OK I fund a tree that has Donald Martin and family showing Donald came to Canada about 1831 which fits with census.
He is shown as married to 1. Marion MacDonald 2. Ann McLean
so I thought I would see if there is a birth in Scotland records at familysearch.org for
a Jane Ann Graham born about 1873-1875 Greenock, Scotland with mother Ann McLean
the Scottish records there are pretty sparse - I generally have a lot more luck at Scotlandspeople but it is a pay site.
But luck seemed to be with us as I found a possible one - I know that in 1911 census jane/Jenne is shown as born May 1875 but her age does change a bit from one census to another
the entry at familysearch.org says Jane Graham may 18, 1872 Middle-East-West parishes, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
parents John Graham and Ann Mclean
so certainly a possibility
the tree mentioned does not show Jane's info after 1891 census
I am not totally sure that this is your Jane/Jennie but sure seems to fit so far, and explains the Martin/Graham names for her.
They have Mary Ann Martin married to Mendoch John Beaton and I did find the marriage Aug. 26, 1885 Barford, Quebec, and signing was a William Martin (brother?) Mary Ann is shown as of Winslow
they also have the elder Jane Martin as married to Charles A. Damon and I found it also
April 29, 1881 Hereford, Quebec and Mary Ann Martin is a witness.
She died Feb. 5, 1896 age 33 years.
All for now, Carolyn
