My maternal grandfather is a Lamb, descended from Thomas (Thomas > Magloire > Jean > Adelard > Gerard). The origins of this Lamb family are fairly difficult to discern. Based largely on deduction, I believe that Thomas was born in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, England. English documents confirm a 1786 birth for this Thomas to Joseph Lamb and Sarah Hathaway, married on 17 August 1784. I believe that this Thomas also served in the 41st Regiment of Foot for the British Army during the War of 1812. He is subsequently listed as a settler in Canada with Captain Adam Muir (Canadian National Archives). The Archives document also list this Thomas' address in Gloucestershire.
So, is this hard evidence? No. But, our Thomas' marriage in the Anglican Cathedral confirms his English background. The birth dates are similar. Also, the private Thomas is confirmed as having settled in Canada in a time frame appropriate for our ancestor. I have not found other Thomas Lambs who fit this time frame.
