My great grandfather John Mc Donald was married to Philias Audet dit Lapointe. He was born in Leeds on 9/12/1838. His father was James Mc Donald who married Marcelline Lettre at St. Andrew Church in Quebec on 9/11/1829. I have never been able to get back further on either the Mc Donald or the Lettre line. I was told James came from Queens County Ireland and that the name Lettre is really Loeder (German-from a mercenary soldier who fought during the American Revolution) If anyone has any ideas about where I should look for further information, I would appreciate you contacting me. Thanks.

Perhaps you could try contacting Peter MacDonald, he may know about the family you are seeking. If you haven't already checked with him, contact me privately and I will give you his address.

Mc Donald Mc Donald / Lettre
Here is what I found about Lettre family
Georges Lettre (also spelled Laidre, Laites, Letres, Letter, Laider, Leidre, Leter) pronounced leather in german, was a german soldier of Hesse Hanau Regiment stationned in Quebec during the American Revolution. George and 14 other german soldiers were conceeded land in St-Gilles near Saint-Nicolas. Those germans were Calvinists, Lutherians, and of other protestant religions.
Chldren were baptised Catholic, only religious community in the surroundings. The priests have rebaptised the family many times, trying to write down names they had never heard of, as well as they could. His wife's name changes from on child to the next but there are similarities in most cases : Sabine Mangere, Tibine Maure, Tibine Morai, Josephe Sabina, Marie Marcher, Eve Savine, Eve Savina, Esta Sabina, Margerine Savina.
All records agree that this man was a german soldier Hesse Hanau regiment, born in Virs Bourgen Germany Eveche de Mayence, who died 22-12-1795 in Saint-Gilles where he was burried in the Protestant cemetery, but the benediction was given by the catholic priest at St-Nicolas.
Identified Children are : Jean-Baptiste Laidre 23-05-1779 in Saint-Martin Pierre Laidre 1788 Saint-Nicolas Jean Georges Leidre 19-10-1781 Saint-Nicolas Jean Philippe Laites 22-09-1783 Saint Nicolas Marie Lettre 1992 Saint Nicolas
Dead children although catholic are burried in St-Gilles' Protestant cemetery.
One of those boys or another that I have not found yet must be Marcelline Lettre's father.
Hope anyone can help us.

I too am related to James McDonald/Marcelline Lettre. I don't have any more solid information than the other repliers have given you. I was wondering if you found out anything new about either one (especially James) since last October (i.e. the last response). Would appreciate a reply.
