I am looking for information on Capt. Thomas William Howe and his wife, Esther (Sutherland) Howe. Thomas was with the 34th. Regiment of Foot and was stationed in Trois Rivieres around 1845, where both he and his wife died suddenly , leaving 4 children who were placed in an orphanage in Montreal. I am looking for the cemetery where they might be buried and any information as to the cause of their deaths.

I'm also connected to this family, since Thomas and Esther Howe were my 3rd great grandparents. Let me know if you still need any info.

Would love to exchange information on this family. We are having a "Family gathering" in July of the Angus MacMillan/Maggie Gilmore descendants in July. Maggie was Esther's grandaughter.

Here's what I know, in brief, from historical records and anecdotes from relatives.

1. Capt. Thomas William HOWE was born 1808 in Tynemouth, Northumberland, UK. Christened on 1 Jan 1809 at Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland, UK. Father: Thomas Howe Mother: Ann Pettit. He married Esther Emma Sutherland 1828 in County Cork, Ireland. She was born Abt. 1810 in Ballinasloe, Galway, Ireland, and died 07 Apr 1844 in Trois-Rivieres, QC. Thomas died 09 Aug 1845 in Trois-Rivieres, QC where was was Barrack Master at the time. Both of them are buried in the Protestant Cemetery, Trois-Rivieres.

Their four children were sent to the Protestant Orphan Asylum in Montreal, which had been founded in 1815 and was managed by The Montreal Ladies' Benevolent Society. The building that housed the orphanage was demolished in the 1960s.

2A. Maj. William Thomas HOWE was born 18 Jun 1835 at the Officers' Barracks in Fredericton, NB, and died Apr 1918 in Stanley, NB. He married Mary Ann Donald on 24 Jun 1862 in Fredericton, NB. She was born 31 Dec 1830 in Fredericton, and died Jun 1917 in Stanley. They had four children. Both are buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Stanley.

Young William attempted to run away from the orphanage twice, and succeeded on his second try in 1847 and somehow made his way back to his grandfather's home in Penniac NB, where he lived until he married and moved to Ward Settlement (now part of Stanley). He had a distinguished military and political career, and a portrait of him hangs in the York-Sunbury Museum in Fredericton.

2B. Mary Fox HOWE was born 25 May 1837 in Ballinasloe, Galway, Ireland while her mother was visiting her family. A friend of the family, Colonel Fox, was asked to choose a name, and he named her for his wife and donated one hundred pounds to the family.

Soon after Mary was orphaned she was put in service to the Blake family in New Haven CT as a companion for their daughter. This family treated her very well, more like a relative than an employee. When she was about 20 years old she decided to return to her grandfather's farm in Penniac. She married her brother's friend Thomas Gilmore on 30 Jun 1859 in Nashwaak, NB and they had ten children. She died 18 Aug 1907 in Penniac and is buried at the Penniac United Church.

2C. Jessie Callan HOWE was born 10 Mar 1841 in Trois-Rivieres, QC. She received a good education at the orphanage, and upon coming of age she returned to New Brunswick to become a teacher. She married Alfred Clark on 19 May 1870 in Fredericton, NB and they were living in St. Mary's Parish at the 1871 census. They had one child, Mary Ann Clark, before Jessie passed away suddenly from consumption. I've so far been unable to determine a date.

2D. Katherine Anne HOWE was born 23 Apr 1842, Trois-Rivieres, QC. Like her sister, she received an education at the orphanage prior to returning to New Brunswick. At the 1861 census she was living at the home of John Gilmore and family in Stanley, her brother-in-law. She supposedly went to Saint John NB to work, and died around 1880 without having married. I have as yet been able to find exactly when and where she died.

I'm also a Howe descendant:
Thomas W., William Thomas, Mary Anne, Ernest William Sansom (my grandfather).

Thank you so much for this information. It follows the family stories that were passed on to me by my mother, who also wrote a bit more about Mary's time in the orphanage. You have added many more details to the information that I have.
I would be interested in e-mailing you privately, but cannot access your e-mail address as I am being asked to become a member of Ancestry which at this time I prefer not to do.
Do you have photos of Mary Fox Howe and Thomas Gilmore? I have 2 of Mary and 1 of Thomas. Do you have a copy of the book "That The Past May Live...Tales of My Childhood and Youth" by Martha Gilmore ......, oldest daughter of Mary and Thomas Gilmore and my grandmother's sister? These are still available.

Update: I am still researching the family and trying to find out what happened to the two younger daughters of T.W. Howe and Esther Sutherland - Jessie Callan Howe born 1841 and Catherine Anne Howe born 1842. At present I have little new information despite visits to the Provincial Archives of NB and many online searches. I've taken photos of the names recorded in the W.T. Howe family Bible that is in the Archive's repository but I believe that information I've already recorded elsewhere.

I've determined that after Jessie Callan Howe's marriage to Alfred Clark they were living in Saint Mary's Parish at the 1871 Census and had a 1 month old daughter Mary Ann. At the 1881 Census the widowed Alfred and 10-year-old Mary Ann were in Stanley, then in 1891 Alfred is lodging with a family in Stanley. I can assume Mary Ann married or died between 1881 and 1891 but at this time I can't find a record of either.

I do have a copy of That the Past May Live by Martha Gilmore, but I don't remember if I have photos. I will look when I return home.
