You referred to "his sons" in reference to Nicolas Baron dit Lupien in your message. Jacques, who took on the dit name of Belair was indeed Nicolas and Marie Marthe Chauvin's son. However as you pointed out, after Nicolas' death in 1697, his wife Marie Marthe Chauvin and D'Andre Ethier had an illigitmate son, Joseph, who was given the Lupien name and used the dit name of Lafreniere. He was born May 3, 1701. Marie Marthe later married Jean Baptiste Fleury on Apr 29, 1706 and they had a daughter, Marie Angelique, born June 29, 1706. Marie Angelique was the only child of this marriage and she married Jean St. Germain.

There are/were no "blood related" Nicolas Baron dit Lupien descendants through Joseph Lupien dit Lafreniere from Joseph's marriages and children even though he used the Lupien name. However, all Joseph Lupien dit Lafreniere's descendants would indeed be 1/2 "blood related" through Marie Marthe Chauvin.

I have different sources for my Lupien data and some of it came from "Our French Canadian Ancestors" by Jacques Saintongue and translated by Thomas LaForest - Volume 8, Chapter 2, "Nicolas Baron dit Lupien." I highly recommend the volume to all Lupien kin.

I would very much like to receive more information on any of Jacques Lupien dit Belair's descendants if anyone would share with me.

Interesting note: I have a copy of Nicolas' baptismal record that I obtained from a French Archive. It was written in "old French" with very tiny writing so very difficult to read even when enlarged.

Surnames: Baron, Lupien, Lafreniere, Ethier, Chauvin
The son of Andre Ethier and Marie Marthe Chauvin was baptised, in Pointe-aux-Trembles, under the name Joseph ETHIER, with no mention of his illegitimate status, even though he was.

He was raised in Maskinonge under the family name of Baron as a child. Joseph ETHIER was "not given" the family name Lupien, as mentioned. Dit names were the custom in those days. The children of Nicolas Baron-dit-Lupien took on the dit name of their father, while Jacques Baron-dit-Lupien also used the dit name Belair; as for Joseph (Baron) Ethier, their half brother, he took on the dit name of Lafreniere. His descendants used the family name Baron as well as Lafreniere, and have never used the family name of Ethier.

Joseph Ethier-dit-Baron-Lafreniere happens to be my direct ancestor.
