I'm trying to find some information on two households I found in the 1881 Census for Hunterstown (near Louiseville) in the 1881 Census. The first family consists of Michael Lysaght (spelled Lysight in the Census), his wife Mary Ann (Walker) and their five children. The second, next door, is for a James Lysight, his wife (Rose) Delima Bellemare, and their 4 children.

Michael is my gg-grandfather. I am particularly interested in trying to find birth and death records from the area. Before he married Mary Ann Walker in Vermont, Michael had a previous marriage about which I have no information. Presumably his first wife died, and I would speculate that James is a son from the first marriage. Also, one of the sons listed in the Census ("Welly") disappeared before I found the family again in Wisconsin in 1900, at which time Mary Ann is listed as having 5 children, 3 living, which suggests strongly that Welly was dead (I know one of their sons died in Wisconsin).

On a US marriage license, their daughter Jane lists her birth place as Louisville, Canada (presumably Louiseville--and you have no idea how much time I spent looking in the wrong place because of that missing 'e').

I've checked microfilmed parish records from the area, and I found the marriage record for James Lysaght and Delima Bellemare in the records of St. Ursule Catholic Church, but the Lysaghts are Protestant rather than Catholic, and I can find nothing on their family.

Any suggestions (short of driving to Quebec)?

If your Lysaght ancestor was a protestant, you might try the only protestant denomination existing in and around Louiseville, that I know of, starting in early 1800's: the Episcopal Church.

It's available on microfilm. That's much faster than driving down to Quebec...:)

Yeah, thanks.

I already tried that (without much luck). My problem is that I think the family was fairly routinely traveling back and forth between Quebec and northern Vermont during the period I'm interested in. I've tried microfilm from both and found a little data in both countries, but not much.

They were clearly Episcopal in later years. The family originates in the US/Canada with Michael Lysaght, who entered in 1841 (not sure what port or even to be honest which country) from Ireland. The next hard data point I have is October 1858, the marriage of Michael Lysaght to Mary Ann Walker in Burlington, Vermont. I've been trying to track down the church in which the marriage was recorded, but it seems to have been performed by a traveling minister. I also found one daughter born to them in 1859. My problem is that the marriage record lists this as Michael's SECOND marriage.

In the 1881 Canadian Census Michael is living next to a James Lysight and family (born: 1854 according to the 1901 Census) who married Rose Delima Bellemare in the CATHOLIC faith (Ste. Ursule).

What I'm really trying to pin down is the link between Michael and James as well as what happened to Michael's first wife. My working theory is that James was a child of the first marriage, but that's wholly speculative at this point. The data available says he was born in Vermont, and that Michael would be aprroximately 30-35 at the time.

Thanks anyway...

Thanks a lot. This should really help. I recently bought a CD that had copies of some marriage records from Ste. Ursule church and some baptismal records from St. Paulin, so I had some of this, but not all.

As I said in my original post, I suspect James is the son of my gg-grandfather Michael by his first marriage, but that's really just speculation at this point. Since they were Protestant, I've been trying to arrange a research trip to look at the Anglican Church of Quebec's records, but I'm having a hard time fitting it into my schedule.

The marriage and death information you provided should be a big help as well. According to the actual marriage record for James and Rose Delima, she is the daughter of Caliste Bellemare, who is living next door to them in the 1881 Census.

Thanks again for your help!

Glenn

Hello Glenn,

Just to add that I am born in the Parish of Ste-Ursule and living in Montréal now. If you wont a copy of this very little Protestant Church, I have a copy on my computer. I check in a book that we have about the story of Ste-Ursule. I find that this Temple was called (All Saints Church). They write that Protestant family come between 1780 and 1785 (group of american Loyalist) in Ste-Ursule. About 20 family. The church have been built in 1896, with 2 stages (14 X 30 foot), in wood. The first stage was a school. The church have place for 100 persons. Before this contruction, those Protestant use Louiseville Temple, built in 1795. The Temple of Ste-Ursule have been closed in 1963, and demolish in 1965, by the last Prostestant, Mr Jesse Leber.

I Have at home a lot of repertory. That why I find you all those dates. I think that if we check by contract of marriage, we could find the mother and father of James, may be...

We have a old repertory of marriages of Ste-Ursule, with a few pages for Protestant marriages. But they only write the witnesses. We will have in a few months, all Ste-Ursule (Birth - Death and Marriages). I will check if Rose Délima or Rose-de-Lima or only Délima was born there. She was not in St-Paulin, St-Léon-le-Grand, Louiseville, Yamachiche, St-Barnabé-Nord, St-Sévère, etc...
