Les Cossette aux État-Unis : COSSETTE, PROSPER

Depuis quelque temps, j’entretiens des communications, via Internet, avec madame Renée Pero de
Wichita, Kansas, une descendante par alliance de Prosper Cossette, le frère de mon arrière grand-père,
Pierre Alfred Cossette, fils de Pierre Cossette et de Luce Perrin.
Voici le résumé d’un texte anglais qu’elle m’a transmis en août 2003 concernant cette lignée que nous
avions de la difficulté à retracer.
Prosper Cossette est né le 11 février 1854 à Saint-Prosper, Canada. Il était le fils de Pierre Cossette et
de Luce Perrin. Le 17 juillet 1877, il épousait, à St-Prosper, Alvina Rompré, née le 15 mars 1858. Neuf
enfants naquirent de cette union : Marie (1879), Elizabeth (1880), Laura (1882), Victor (1883), Florence
(1885), Virginia (1887, décédée en 1887), John (1891), Edward (1894), Éva (1897).
Son métier de menuisier l’ayant amené à déménager à plusieurs reprises pour trouver du travail, ils
décidèrent de s’établir aux États-Unis et c’est en 1887 qu’ils arrivent dans le territoire de Chequamegon,
à Ashland, Wisconsin, une ville florissante où les emplois abondent et où on y retrouve des racines
catholiques. Prosper travaille alors à la construction de l’église St. Agnes, à l’école St. Mary et à l’église
de Odanah, à l’hôpital St. Joseph et au « Wilmarth Block No 3 ».
En 1899, ils déménagent à Iron County, Wisconsin, où il occupe un poste de menuisier pour la «
Montreal Company » . Au moment de sa retraite, en 1922, ils décident de revenir définitivement Ã
Ashland.
Un de leurs fils, Edward, caporal dans la 127e infanterie U.S.N.G. (guerre 1914-18) a été sévèrement
blessé en France pendant un bombardement et il est décédé le 3 juillet 1918. Pour commémorer sa
mémoire, le poste de la Légion américaine à Hurley, Wisconsin, porte son nom.
Prosper Cossette est décédé le 9 octobre 1936 et Alvina Rompré, le 16 mars 1939. Ils sont inhumés au
cimetière St. Agnes d’Ashland.
Leur fille, Florence Marie Cossette, née le 30 juillet 1885 à St-Prosper, s’est mariée à Daniel Pero le 20
septembre 1904 à Ashland où ils ont vécu pendant plusieurs années.
Ils ont eu huit enfants : William, Eleanor, Leonard, Dorothy, Rose Marie, Julia, Edward et Patricia Pero.
Florence Cossette Pero a été très active comme bénévole dans plusieurs organismes charitables et
religieux, son mari travaillant comme contremaître aiguilleur de trains pour une compagnie de minerai. Il
est d’ailleurs décédé accidentellement à l’emploi de cette compagnie; il avait 64 ans.
Florence Cossette et Daniel Pero, décédés respectivement le 18 juin 1963 et le 30 août 1943, sont eux
aussi inhumés au cimetière St. Agnes d’Ashland. Les descendants de la famille Cossette/Pero se
retrouvent au Wisconsin, au Minnesota, de même qu’au Kansas.

The 127th Infantry Regiment was created in 1917 as a part of the 32nd Division in "The
Great War" or "The World War". The 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was the nucleus
of the 127th Infantry. Elements of the 1st and 3rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiments were
combined with the 2nd to complete the formation of the 127th. The 127th Infantry has
always been composed of Wisconsin National Guardsmen, except during World War I
and World War II when soldiers from every state joined its ranks. The 127th Infantry
has always been a part of the 32nd Division
