Interested in sharing information with all those researching Kettele, Kettle, Kittle families of Lachute, Quebec. In particular: Chancy Kettele born about 1819 in Lachute, Elon Kittle born about 1804 in Lower Canada whose daughter Jane was baptized 7 Apr 1846 in Lachute Presbyterian Church, Lachute, Quebec and Nancy Kittle, born 16 Oct 1821 "near Montreal Canada." The relationship of these three is unknown, but all moved to Dundas or Stormont County, Ontario by the early 1840's.

William Kittle (1837-1903) appears in my book and CD-ROM Mayors and councillors of Thunder Bay 1873-1945 p. 97. He was born about 1 Sept 1837 in Lachute, Argenteuil County Quebec, parents unknown and moved to Finch Township, Stormont County lot 14 concession 8 where his children were born in the 1860s. In 1871 he was a tenant there on a 100 acre farm. Around 1879 he relocated to Prince Arthur's Landing (later Port Arthur, then Thunder Bay) and appears in the 1901 Census for Rat Portage Ontario. He died in Port Arthur ON 30 January 1903 age 65. Is this the same family?

Yes, William was the son of Elon Kittle of Stormont County Ontario and his wife Margaret was the daughter of Chancy Kettele of Dundas County Ontario. It is likely (but not proven) that Elon and Chancy were brothers. They both definitely came from the Laurentides.

Do you have any information of a Kittle, first name unknown marrying Michael McMahon of Finch Township around 1857-58? I believe they had a son Michael born abt. 1858 and then she may have died as Michael remarried in 1863. The son Michael, emigrated to Chicago.

Hi,
Nice to hear from you. In the 15 years since I posted last, I haven't uncovered any additional information about Chancy/Chauncy or Elon's background. This failure despite several trips to Eastern Canada, and research in the Ottawa Public Library. Have you heard any guesses from your family? I was hoping that there might have been some family lore from your branch, which are descendants of both Chancy and Elon.

I can share the following with you from Brent Scollie :
Extract from CD-ROM/book Mayors and Councillors of Thunder Bay 1873-1945 (Thunder Bay, Ont.: Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society, 2000) author Frederick Brent Scollie

KITTLE, William (sometimes spelled Kettle, Kettles in newspapers)
Port Arthur councillor Ward 3 1898. b. 1 Sept 1837 Lachute, Argenteuil County QU m. Margaret ----- (born 3 May 1842 Ontario, she died 17 Oct 1926) d. 30 January 1903 Port Arthur ON age 65. Buried Riverside Cemetery.

A Quebecker of Scottish descent, Kittle settled across the Ottawa River in Finch Township, Stormont County ON lot 14 concession 8 where his children were born in the 1860s. In 1871 he was a tenant there on a 100 acre farm. Around 1879 he relocated to Prince Arthur's Landing, then spent a few years living in Rat Portage ON. Not until the 1890s do he and his son Leslie emerge into prominence as contractors, operating from their residence on Tupper Street. In 1893 they were granted a ballasting contract on the year-old electric street railway, the year he petitioned for the unseating of George Marks as mayor. In 1895 they were in the ice cutting business, pulling out ice from the harbour for the Lake Superior Fish Co. By 1896 they were cutting ice for CPR hotels and boarding houses. He moved back to Rat Portage in 1899 where his daughter Mrs Insley was living, but returned to Port Arthur in June 1901. That year he had the contract to install the Arthur Street sewer, injuring himself when the work caved in. He also had a contract to do work upgrading Balsam St. He died while taking out wood a few miles from town. A faithful worker in the Methodist Church and a member of the temperance movement. According to his obituary, "warm and genial was his spirit". Daughters, Mary Jane (28 May 1868 - 26 Nov 1942), Mrs John Insley of Kenora and Port Arthur; Catherine (b. Nov 1870) and Ellen, one of whom was Mrs E.G. Burleigh of Amherstburg ON, then Detroit MI; Fanny Adelia, Mrs. James H. Morris Brown.
