Hi cousin Bev,
I recently speculated about the origins of the Dodds and would be interested in your comments
https://peersuptonsmithdodd.wordpress.com/2015/06/28/hard-an...Last summer I went to the cemetery at St. Andrews which I assumed was the burial site for Adam and Agnes but did not find their headstones. I met David Bryson who looks after the cemetery and corresponded with him.
Here is our corespondence
Regarding Adam Dodd, I did not find any reference to him in our records but I did find Agnes Dodd who died in 1893. She was the wife of Alex Dewar 1876, they are both buried in lot # 115 which is the Dewar lot......Donald Dewar,Mary Mullan. This lot is situated close to where we were standing, maybe 75' more towards the back of the cemetery and 75' to the right. Close monuments would be McLean, Veitch, Cole. Maybe Agnes is Adams sister and he is buried in this same lot. If I find anything else I will forward it to you. Thank you.
David Bryson
Secretary Treasurer St Andrews Protestant Cemetery.
David,
Attached is the death and burial record I have found online for Agnes Dodd, wife of Alexander Dewar. According to this record, from the Drouin Collection on Ancestry, Agnes’ remains were deposited in the vault of the burying ground of St. Andrews on the 22 November 1883, two days after her death. One of the witnesses was Adam Dodd, who I believe was Agnes’ brother. Adam (Jr.) and Agnes were the children of Adam (Sr.) and Agnes Biggins.
Her death being late in November, I presume that Agnes’ remains would have been buried in the Dewar family plot next to her husband the following spring when the ground had thawed???
The burial record of Adam (Sr.) Dodd shown below is from
Quebec, Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1967 about Adam Dodds
Name: Adam Dodds
Event: Enterrement (Burial)
Burial Year: 1859
Burial Location: St-Philippe-d`Argenteuil, Québec (Quebec)
Place of Worship or Institution: Church of England
The burial location is listed as St. Philllipe d’Argenteuil. But I thought that this was the cemetery at a Roman Catholic Church?
This would seem unlikely given that Adam was CofE. Did the parish change it’s name or is this a recording error? It still seems possible that Adam was buried at St Andrews cemetery but I had better check the cemetery at St Phillipes as well.
