Hello, just to let you know, I will be going to Weir, Quebec, in the next few weeks. If I find any markers in the names you are looking for, I'll send you the pictures.

have you ever checked the Avoca Cemetery

my dad who is now 90 was born in Harrington and a lot of his family, Youngs, McCutcheons, Arthrus etc. are buried there

Thanks Bruce,
I appreciate your offer of help in locating my ancestor's burial place. A few weeks ago I made a trip to the Glen Cemetery near Weir but I didn't find a stone for Sarah Ellen Dewar Smith. It's not a large cemetery but perhaps you will have better luck if you are still planning on heading up that way.

Sylvia,
Thanks fo the link to the Avoca Cemetery. I checked the listings recorded in the document and although there were a few Smiths and a few Dewars, Sarah Ellen was not one of them. I visited the Avoca Cemetery a few years back but it might be worth another trip.
Thanks for the suggestion,
Barry

my dad went back with my nephew to see some family last month, and I have pics they took at the cemetery of my dad by his mom's headstone and a few others as well
and my dad way back mentioned Dewars in the area
somewhere online I hope there would be a map to the cemetery with each headstone's location... but it is Avoca after all so maybe there is none there yet
good luck in your search Barry

I just called dad fast- he was friends with a Rodney Dewar who lived "down the old Front road" close to Stonefield, and they were friends with Willis Crooks
there was another Dewar who apparently wasn't related to Rodney in Kilmar dad thinks
and his name was Elmer Dewar
one or the other of those gentlemen would be part of your tree I imagine
very small world

not sure if you have discovered findagrave.com
but here is a page with some of my dad's relatives (mine too for that matter) in Avoca in the McNeil's Cemetery which I guess is the proper name
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GSiman...

so if you type in some names here hopefully you'll have a bit of luck
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=23...

looks like they have 455 graves recorded here

dad ginished his dinner and d just called me back- he remembers working in the mines in Kilmar (Harrington) with Willis Smith and Melvin Smith- he thinks they may have been cousins- at 90 he's a bit fuzzy on that
and overseas in England during the war he had a sergeant who was from Harrington
named Clifford Smith- if he's your relative you'll be able to get war records on him if you don't already have them
he recalls a Cecil Dewar- related to Elmer he thought
and one of my mom Claire's best friends was Norma Dewar
my mom passed in 1996
she went to school with Norma and the 2 of them would go to Ottawa every day to work
mom was one of the secretaries for the Minister of Finance I believe during the war and maybe Norma was too
they both worked in the parliament buildings
dad has an old photo of mom that he carries in his wallet where mom is looking very pretty and with her friend Norma Dewar- who was also really pretty
so if Norma is on your tree and you don't have a photo I'll scan it for you. I wouldn't mind a copy of it myself actually. I've seen it many times and can't remember who mom said her friend was, but I'm sure mom had to have told me.

we moved to Port Colborne in 1952 so my parents lost touch with a lot of people back then except for immediate family mostly- too bad they didn't have internet/facebook back then
if dad remembers more I'll let you know and you can let me know if any of it is useful or if you already have it
I mentioned the name Sarah Ellen to dad but he's never heard it before. I thought it was worth a try because I don't think you mentioned what time frame she lived in

thanks Barry, I look forward to reading the links you provided
My dad was never in Scotland during the war, if that is where Howard was, so I don't know if that info helps at all where it comes to Clifford Smith. Dad's memory is still quite good when it comes to the way. And when you mention the Rouge, my father's birth father was a carpenter working on the bridge in spring 1923 and slipped and fell into the river and was never found (months before ny dad was born. And his step father, Norman Young was a logger and drowned in the rapids there as well in 1933 or 34.
When I talk to dad later this morning to share your info, fingers crossed he may remember more.

Hello Barry, yesterday, my son and I went to Weir to photograph the monuments, then, we went to Arundel, which is about 6 kms. north of Weir. I photographed several Smith stones. If you want, I can email them to you, that way, you decide if they are related to you or not. My email address is..coon@vianet.ca
