Surnames: Pelletier, Pelkey, DuFresne, Marsan, Lapierre, Marsil
I am trying to find the ancestors and trace the origin of my great grandmother, Elmire Pelletier (sometimes spelled Pelkey), whom, oral tradition and physical traits would indicate, has full or partial native american origin. I have information on her birth and marriage in Lanaudiere area of Canada: She was born, the daughter of Agapite Pelletier and Angele DuFresne, August 20, 1844 or 1845, 'on the mountain' (relative to Joliette, Quebec), and married to my great grandfather, a lumberjack, Narcisse Marsan dit Lapierre, on August 19, 1861, in St. Charles Borromee parish, Joliette. I have no further recorded information on her family. I am able to trace most of my great grandfather's family back to France, and they include Regiment de Carignan ancestors. My great grandparents emigrated to Enfield, Connecticut, with their (they had had 8 at that time) children in about 1880. Their children, in order, were named Napoleon, Josephine, Agapite, Cordelia, William, Fred, May Eva, Joseph, Elizabeth (my grandmother), and Laura. Is anyone reading this message aware of connections of Agapite Pelletier and/or Angele DuFresne? Or Pelletiers in the Joliette area? What indian tribe or tribes my Pelletier (Pelkey) ancestors in the Joliette area might have been connected with? I can supply much more information on the great grandfather's family if that would be helpful. For example, my great grandfather's parents were Pierre Marsan dit LaPierre and Catherine Marsil (Mercille)married at St. Paul parish in Joliette on June 4, 1821, and my great grandfather was born on February 25, 1834 in Joliette. Thank you.

I also descend from Nadeau's who have Anishinaabe lineage. My great great grandfather was Joseph Nadeau and according to a pedigree chart that I foun he is listed as being 4/4ths. He married Annie Macabee who was also listed as 4/4ths.

However it seems that some of my family believe Joseph and Annie were each only half. I know that their fathers both came from Canada. Joseph's Dad as far as I know was a Basil Nadeau, I have also seen Basin Neddo.

Annie's Dad was Moses Macabee. Now family lore says they are French, and who knows that might be true, but I am somewhat curious because I have seen the surnames of Macabee and Nadeau linked with Metis.

Using my husband's account to answer. My Nadeau's start with Marc M. to Jeanne Despres. They had Joseph Osanny Nadeau in 1639 who married Marguerite Abraham.they in turn had Denis in 1673, Ste Famille, I.O. who married Charlotte Lacasse.Charlotte and Denis had Joseph in 1698 and he married Angelique Turgeon. Louise was born in 1729 and married Francois Lebreque.

I don't have Macabee in my direct lineage. Does any of these fit in with your line? What do you know about those who are Anishinaabe? How do you know, any documents? Please reply: LMThistle@aol.com

Well My Grandmother was Tribal through the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians as well as all of her siblings. Some of her cousins who spelled their names Nadeau (my grandma's maiden was spelled Nedeau). Are Tribal members of the Little Traverse band Odawa Indians.

Now all of her family grew up in the Nahma, Delta County area of the Upper Peninsula (U.P) of Michigan. But My grandma's Grandfather Joe's father originated from Canada.

I am glad to hear that Canada is in the mix.... I show nothing in Michiagan. Do you happen to have the ancestry for your Grandma's Grandfather Joe's Father? Does it match my Nadeau's by chance making us related? I knew they were native but couldn't find any documents saying that. Have been looking for some time to connect with relatives.

I sent an email that tells you how Joe becomes Tribal, but I have not been able to go past Basile Nadeau/ Basin Neddo. For some reason once I dig around in Canada I go everywhich direction but correct.

I will definitely look into your line though, seems to be the most promising clue that I have seen. Besides all my relation saying simply French and rolling with it.

As of now most of the Native blood comes from Julia (Beaver) Nadeau/Neddo. But something tells me there is more to Basile.
