Excusez-moi, Suzanne Leclair. I believe you previously posted elsewhere regarding St. Roch de l'Achigan as part of Lanaudiere region, but as this is more recent, hello. Perhaps you can assist me regarding the missing registers for 1794. I can see from the Index at Family Search, and comparing with PRDH that about 40 acts are recorded from some old repertoire but that many pages are missing. I can also differentiate which of them are the 20 or so acts which are actually viewable acts and which are not. So I can see there are some missing months. Although any information about this will be immensely helpful, in particular I would like to know if there is any reason to suspect that this mission/parish was closed for any portion of that year. It is clear it was open for the full year in 1793 and 1795 (with well over 100 acts each year). I am trying to put a little more accuracy into the likely baptism of Francois Bertrand (1793-1795) s/o Joachim Bertrand and Marie Josephte Morin at this parrish, probably the next child of that couple born after the death of their first Francois (only 5 days old) at St. Roch in Oct 1792. Since 1793 and 1795 seem to be full and complete, and he isn't there, 1794 seems a likely suspect.

Regards and respect,
Robert Herman

First of all, I corrected the title of your post, as it is pertaining to a different subject, that being the birth record of Francois Bertrand in St-Roch-de-l'Achigan...

Second, I was not aware of any missing parish register pages from 1793 to 1795. So I had a quick look at the parish register for the period of 1787 to 1797. The year 1793 starts at page/Folio 63 (Drouin 71/128)and ends at page 74, and not one page is missing during that period. And the year 1794 starts on page/Folio 75, with a marriage record dated April 29, 1794, and ends on page/Folio 78, with a baptism record dated in October 1794, and again, not a single page is missing. But some months are missing, obviously.

As to the reasons why some months are missing from the register while not a single page is missing, I have no way of knowing.

The only thing that I'm aware of, is that a new priest, Father Charles Joseph Lefebvre Duchouquet, took over in January 1793, from the previous curate, Antoine Desforges, and he stayed in St-Roch up to 1796.

It is quite possible that the records of the missing months can be found in the registers of a nearby parish, such as St-Jacques-de-l'Achigan. That was common practice in those days, particularly if the priest was responsible for more than one parish.

The publication for St-Roch-de-l'Achigan makes no mention of a particular problem with the parish registers for the period in question.

Merci Suzette Leclair, for the prompt reply and adjustment, le deuxieme Excusez-moi. From the Index (both LDS and Ancestry) for 1794 Baptemes, there is a short note about an old repertoire and lost folios from the register. The page numbers you refered to (renumbered), and a few more out of sequence have acts dated in 1794 (some in error) but only 16 of 19 such page numbers are marked on the index, with the 19 viewable in the registers. The other 24, plus one marriage contract are shown there and at PRDH. However it would seem these two dozen names exist only in the index. That said, all those early years of St. Roch had over 100 acts, so these 41 acts for 1794 stand out as an anomaly, but how to explain it? It is not clear from that note that the names indexed there are a complete and full list from that old repertoire or indeed if that repertoire was itself complete. I will of course be looking at St. Jacques and elsewhere for clues, and getting feed-back from others. Thank you again.
